How Important is Keyword Research To You?

Ive been slacking on my keyword reasearch lately but have decided its time I try to create some "mini products" in smaller niches. Ive been doing quite a bit of research on wordtracker this morning and have found alot of keywords that get high searches with low comp.

In all honesty I have never found a keyword that I can rank for with ease that brings me more than 30 uniques per day. Am I doing something wrong here? Perhaps in smaller niches this is easy since I have been working in larger niches like weight loss, acne, anti spyware programs etc.

So im looking in smaller niches and im seeing keywords that gets 100-400 searches daily that I know I can rank for on the first page. Some of these keywords also have adword buyers so I know theres some profit here.

So I was wondering how many warriors here actually find keywords that are easy to rank on the first page for that bring perhaps even 100 uniques per day? Im just curious about this, im thinking about expanding into smaller niches and creating products in these niches that actually have adword buyers and others selling products.

It seems there would be alot of money to be made here with my own products, and this would be something new for me since I usually only work in bigger niches where I get the "spillover" traffic.

I'm exactly in the same situation!

I've read a lot of useful eBooks about how easy it can be to find a niche with small competition and high demand. However, these niches are only good for creating some adsense sites, most of the time, it's not worth to produce your own product for it. Therefore, I also would be greatful, if somebody would show us his methods

well its something ive really never ventured into since I have found success in large niches. I know it can be done, but im wondering exactly how difficult this can be. I like the idea of creating small products and ranking well for keywords.

I just did a quick experiment in the last hour for a low comp. keyword that I should rank well for a product I created within the last 2 weeks. Im just "testing" the waters with a hubpage I created.

I wrote an article at goarticles.com that links back to my hub. I then dug the hub and also created a blogger.com blog and wordpress.com blog. I linked both of those blogs back to my hub with anchor text that targets the keyword im targeting. I then dug both of the blogs and linked the blogger blog back to the wordpress blog.

I have had success doing these type things in the past, hopefully it will go well

It is honestly something that you should really be doing. Prevents a ton of spinning your wheels going for keywords that you just are not going to rank for.

Cory, that is a really good idea. Having a hubpage and then two separate blogs that are all interlinked and dugg. Very cool.

Your keyword research lets you know if you have a market to sell to, if you skip this, you might as well forget about making money, research is everything and it is the most important step in running a strong business.

thanks guys, I really have always liked the idea of linking alot of sites together and building backlinks to them. I really don't know how well this works but it has worked well for a few "testing sessions" I have done. It just makes sense to me to do this

Mel, do you ever find keywords that bring you a high number of unique vistors that are fairly easy to rank for?

Some keywords bring tons of visitors and competition can be low and some don't, the best thing to do is to do your keyword research using quite a few tools to validate the number of searches a keyword gets, then check out the sites that rank well for them and see how strong their backlinks are , seo is just like chess, you have to use a good strong strategy.

Thanks Mel. I have been noticing that wordtracker can be WAY off when it comes to estimates. I have ranked on the 3 spot of the first page of Google for a term that supposedly gets over 1000 daily visits yet im only get around 20 uniques per day for this term.

In fact im still ranked in the 3rd spot for this term but im not getting much traffic at all. I tried different titles and everything to see how that helps, but only getting 20 uniques per day for a term that supposedlt gets 1000 uniques per day was a bit disappointing. What other keyword tools do you recommend to do research with if you dont mind me asking. Thanks

For me personally, keyword research is possibly the most important part of any SEO campaign I undertake.

Get this right, and then ranking on the front page just becomes a matter of doing what we know the SE's want - i.e. create content, generate links etc.

However, if you get this wrong, or don't even do it, then you can end up spending an eternity focusing on keywords that you are never going to rank for, or that are never going to make you any money - despite how well optimized your site is.

I agree that wordtracker results can be way off sometimes, so I usually cross-check them with the google adwords tool. (Also, when using the adwords tool, I tend to use the "Exact" match search count)

There is also a great firefox plugin called SEO Firefox which you can use to get a lot of information about the listings in the search engine results, such as age, PR, domain backlinks, page backlinks, .edu backlinks etc.

This plugin REALLY helps to analyze the competition more effectively.

Sometimes you may find a potential keyword with an apparently low number of competing pages, but the problem is that those pages are very well optimized. With the plugin, you can gauge the true competition much more effectively.

For me, the key to research is to check the data from as many possible sources as possible. Sometimes this can be very time consuming but trust me, if you do it right, the rewards are there.

    Hi all,

Just a note about keyword tools. They should be used just as a guideline. Not taken as fact.

The worse thing you can do is see some good numbers in one of those tools then go spend an entire day making articles, blogs, and other content to get ranked.

You do all that work and you get ranked for your keyword and find out it gets no traffic. Total waste of time. Don't do it.

When I find a keyword in one of those tools that look promising here is what I do:

RUN AN ADWORDS CAMPAIGN FOR YOUR KEYWORD!

Simply write an ad that almost for sure isn't going to get clicked on because it makes no sense and really sucks because you didn't put any benefits in the ad.

This next step is IMPORTANT! It will let you test your keyword really cheap. Usually at the cost of 1 or 2 clicks ot find out if you got a keyword with good traffic.

Run your ad and only bid high enough to get to position 8 or 9. In this position you will get probably get zero clicks. I have found if you are not in top 3 spots you won't get hardly any clicks at all.

What you do now is let the thing run for awhile. After a couple hours or so check how many impressions the ad has gotten. Not clicks , Impressions!

This will show you how much traffic the word is really getting. Now you can decide if you want to spend time to get high ranking for that word.

The whole process of setting up a crappy adwords ad and getting it running takes maybe 5 minutes.

Also, just because the word looks like it gets no traffic in the keyword tools doesn't mean it gets no traffic. It could be quite the opposite. It could be getting a ton of traffic and the keyword tool is lying to you.

So if you find a word that you think would be a good word to target then you should test it by running an adword campaign for an hour or two to see what the real traffic is.

Now get out there and start making some real money!

    Terry

RUN AN ADWORDS CAMPAIGN FOR YOUR KEYWORD!
This is ingenious! I would never in a million years have thought of doing this but now, of course, it makes perfect sense.
