    Excellent tips.

    I would like to add.

Stop thinking that it's going to be easy. IM is hard. There's a lot of competition and you will have to work long hours to break through. If you are not willing to make a sacrifice. Don't even start IM.

    Cheers,

    C.G.

C.G. Absolutely! Whenever people say oh I just do it as a hobby I say that's your mistake number one.

Yes, definitely don't make it as a chore but one needs to be able to look at IM as a business/game - silly game with serious rules kind of thing as Felix Dennis said.

I would also add that when you are starting out, you should be doing something that resonates with you personally. To be successful, you will need to initially spend many hours laboring to make your enterprise a success. In order to maintain that motivation, it needs to be personal. As you said, don't buy in get rich quick schemes, stick with what you have a real passion for.

Thanks Avocado Plugins for remind the basic facts for success in IM... I will add one most important factor... Patience and perseverance..Even when the results are not very visible at the first place.

Every single person has experienced success in internet marketing, if he has persisted long enough with the zeal of making money online.

Those two are the big ones for sure. They say if you stick with it for long enough luck will inevitably be in your favor. The more you persevere the more you stack odds in your favor.

Good to clearly see ones strengths. Also very valuable to clearly see ones weaknesses honestly.

For example if you are one of those people who can persuade anyone to do anything, in your daily life, and are know by others for this ability, then writing advertising copy might come naturally. However, if you are not one of those people, then you probably won't naturally write ad-copy that will convert well, so you will either have to learn how (and test until it works in practice) or get someone else to do it.

As for habits of those who succeed. Yes, good idea, if you can clarify what they are. For example, there are a lot of books saying that what you need to succeed is a PLAN. There are those quoting surveys which looked at those who succeeded and those who didn't, and the looked back at their teen years and what they did or didn't do, and all those who succeeded have a plan, and all those who failed didn't. So that seems clear-cut.

Until you read a book on businesses that have succeeded, and find that having a plan is precisely NOT necessary, and can even get in the way, and how some businesses like McAfee said they had no plan at all other than answer the phone if it wrings. And how getting the bad people out of a group, and the right ones in, is found to be one of the key factors in success, and having a plan may even be worse than not having one.

So you've got to see the bigger picture . . . some people are obviously succeeding by having a plan, some people are obviously succeeding by not having a plan. So maybe other factors are more important, such as the implementation, or which people are involved.

It takes reading a LOT of books to find that most of them are just saying "what everyone knows", and it is really the opposite of the Truth . . . an example being management practice, where still 99% of managers are doing exactly what was shown not to work in a survey decades ago, which is why things work better when the manager is not there.

So there's a lot of "reading between the lines" if you want to find the Truth.

As for "don't buy anything which promises instant riches", yes there is some truth int that, but in practice, one will tend to learn at least a few things from each IM method one tries, even if it doesn't do what it says on the tin. So if it's cheap and is likely to teach you something you are not yet familiar with, then it can be one way of learning . . . even if it is learning what NOT to do, such as I learned from one course when people were complaining about lack of traffic, the seller recommended something "that he uses every day" to get more traffic, and all of us that did it, lost 75% of the traffic we had already, when doing that (it was submitting RSS to 400 RSS-aggregators, which I now know is not a good idea!). So treat each IM method as a learning experience, don't imagine that any of them will do what they say they do and you'll find that some of them don't but you'll learn something anyway, and occasionally you'll find a method that works well for you.

      Thanks for your response Chris!

I think that you are right people can still learn from things that promise riches but don't deliver, however instead learning those things from eBook that you have to pay for just search the forums and find whatever you need. Save the money and gain the knowledge.

As for reading books of course I am not suggesting just reading books and following exactly what it says - however reading books and leaning textbook data for the lack of a better word is very rewarding in a sense that it gives you a certain framework. On top of that framework then you can build your own methods and techniques through practice but straight jumping into practice with no data whatsoever is insanity!

As for the habits I have listed them on my website instead of doing it on the forum just to keep it short on here.

"some people are obviously succeeding by not having a plan" - people who don't have a plan can either succeed by random change or by following someone else's plan. Not having a long term plan is the same as setting yourself up for failure in the future. Life is very unpredictable and one needs to have at least some type of a plan to be able to move from one stage to another. So with this one thing I wouldn't agree.

Once again thanks for your thoughtful response! Great having people contribute more and more to build up on the originally stated ideas

        Great tips!

I would add read a book by Jeff Olson called The Slight Edge & understand the absolute importance of the compound effect & apply it to your IM business.

        Cheers

      Hey Avocado,
      All of these resonant.

Number 2 is one that really helps me keep focused.

I think once you stop learning or your will to stop learning kicks in then you will slowly become less and less successful.

      Just my observation.

    All great tips.

As somebody else said : "I.M. is not easy"

Expect to make a lot of mistakes (and remember that you will learn from each of them). Make as many mistakes as you can, as fast as you can (trying to keep them small mistakes) and you will learn what works and what doesn`t in this game of MMO / IM.
