Is it really possible for a site to convert at 1%?

I get around 2,500 visitors a month to my main site from organic Google results. Last month I made 10 sales totalling $251 and had 154 verified opt-ins. This is all from traffic coming in cold from Google. My autoresponder content has taken me longer than I anticipated to get together, so I'm giving a free download as an incentive to opt-in but there's nothing in my actual autoresponder sequence at present.

So I guess my question is...When people say their pages convert at 1%, do they mean they get their conversions from cold traffic coming in, or is it a combination of that AND people coming to the page from mailouts to their list?

Because that statement "my pages are converting at 1%" could mean anything, that's something that must be asked of the person making the claim.

    Ask them:

Is your Organic Search traffic converting 1% to optin or direct sales?

    Or ..

Is it the people who have subscribed to the autoresponder sequence that eventually convert at 1%?

I would take that statement to mean it converts at 1% from ALL forms of traffic that you send to that page...

I believe most webmasters mean by "converts at 1%" ... on average 1 sale per 100 visitors

Well, yeah, it's absolutely possible for a site to convert at 1% or more with Search engine traffic. If the traffic is pre-sold (not in this case), the page should convert at a higher rate.

You should take a look at your sales page. Doing my Maths, it's current converting at 0.40% which can definitely be improved. Get a pro copywriter to critique your sales page.

When people say they're converting at X%, I assume the data is taken from all the traffic they get.

      Hey,

I'm not a copywriter but you may post a thread The Copywriting Forum. There are many people who could help you out there.

    Hey chameleon,

first of all please let me tell you that the BB King
style track was freaking insane! Loved It!

Second, I would disable the popup, since if someone
watches the video, he gets interrupted by it and has
to watch the video all over.

      Hey chameleon

great site and sounds, led zep track was nice. I think you offer a great product maybe you just need to get it in front of the right market for higher conversions.

Thanks for the kind words Igor! I didn't realise the popover ad messed with the video, so thanks for letting me know...maybe I should replace it with a hover-footer ad instead.

    Hey chameleon,

Great site! I agree with Igor on that you should remove that popup. It suddenly pulled me from the site and my first reaction was to close it to get back to watching that video. A hover ad like what you suggested would be preferable. Perhaps you should make your hover ad 'glide' smoothy into the centre of the screen. That will capture the visitor's attention to the 'moving ad' and I believe chances of reading it will be higher than if it were to suddenly 'pop' up and distract the user(considering that you have a great deal of information on the front page!)

As for the original question, I believe a 1% conversion rate would depend on the user's specific channel of traffic. As such, conversion rates would differ depending on what factors you are using to calculate it. As a whole of course, aim to increase your conversion rate! Copywriting is but one for landing/squeeze pages, but perhaps if you have other forms of traffic (e.g. videos) then you have to take that into account too.

Chameleon, I just took a very quick look at the site, and two things popped into my head...

      1. Since you appear to be targeting guitar players looking to improve their playing, you might have to explain to them what a "backing track" and how it could help them. That might get you some extra sales.

You might want to test a landing page with more of a tutorial approach along with the offer of a single track. Make it a straight squeeze page, then hit them with an OTO on the back side.

      2. You could be missing a major market. I could be wrong, but there seems to be a lot of people looking for intro, outro and bumper music for podcasts, videos and audio tracks. Your stuff is really good.

I'm guessing there are a lot more people making audios and videos of various kinds than there are aspiring blues guitar players...

      Just a thought.

A lot of people forget that it's not just the sales copy that converts the leads but the actual product or service. Also, leads clicking through because of a particular keyword may have no interest in what is on the given site so they just click away. You need to be all over your analytics, studying ever angle of your traffic behavior and where they are coming from. There are a lot of other parts to the conversion puzzle than sales letters and squeeze/landing pages or whatever they are called.

Not saying there is anything wrong with your site - its pretty tidy looking IMO - perhaps your traffic is coming from the wrong places. Have you looked at advertising on guitar forums like ultimateguitar and jemsite etc? Or even submitting some useful articles to them - that's a pretty good way of getting on front of the guitar audience (I'm a guitarist myself).

    Thanks guys! Popup removed :-)

I'm currently ranking 3 in Google.co.uk for the keyword 'Blues Backing Tracks' and 6 in .com so my first target is to get that keyword into first position before working on more keywords. Most of my traffic comes from searches that are either an exact or near match for that keyword.

You can get a lot better than 1% - and Targeted Traffic is the key!

I thought someone searching for 'Blues Backing Tracks' would be as targetted as they come! That's a good idea about advertising on forums though, I'll add that to my To Do list.

    Thanks guys :-)

don't get discouraged. anywhere around 0.50% is pretty normal, but of course not good enough for us. You are off to a start. Now you need to tweak things and every time you tweak something your conversions will probably go up. Some examples for you:
split test your headline, make your guarantee more gutsy, get your copy critiqued, add some testimonials (or more, if you have them already), test the price, etc.
BTW, I have news for you about your 154 opt ins. If you haven't been nurturing them, they are of no use to you by now. You need to give people a reason for belonging to your list. Your list is like gold to you so you should be contacting your list at least twice a week. if you keep your list interested, that's when your conversions will start to go way up. With a list that you don't contact, you cannot expect them to buy anything from you.
Hey, Chameleon, you're not an IT guy are you? I desperately need an IT guy to help me and I do autpresponder sequences. Hmmm...
good luck getting your sales up.
