Brand -Positioning: "The Most Ignored I.M Success Strategy. Do You Have One?"

What's your brand-positioning strategy? If I asked that question to most internet marketers in this forum, how many could give me a direct answer? How many would ignore it? How many would try and fake it? And how many would lash out at me for even asking the question?

Despite the reaction, having a brand-positioning strategy is one of the most important yet ignored strategies for I.M success. And one of the biggest causes of failure. Especially by new, and even old internet marketers.

Yes, finding the right niche is important, building a list is essential and advertising in the right places is a given. But if you fail to establish a brand positioning strategy - before those other steps are taken you could still risk ...

  • Losing focus
  • Getting distracted with shiny object syndrome
  • Doing the right things at the wrong time
  • Diluting your efforts
  • Spreading yourself too thin
  • Wasting money and time
  • Going in Circles
or
  • Majoring in the minors
Ironically, those are also the top reasons most Internet Marketers fail. So, start off by having a brand-positioning strategy (and statement). Because most of your competitors don't have one, that in itself will almost guarantee you a stronger niche.

What's a Brand/Position Statement?
A positioning statement is a one- or two-sentence statement that articulates your product or service's unique value to your customers in relation to your chief competition.

Simple Formula

  • What problem you solve? (Value you provide).
  • What's unique about how or what you do in relation to the competition. (USP)
  • Who do you do it for? (Target Audience)
For example: I help small businesses (Target audience) differentiate there business, product or service from competitors (Problem /Solution) using my simple 15 step checklist (USP).

So, who else has the guts to share their positioning-branding statement with other Warriors and ... the world! Give it a shot, share, practice.

No, I don't "have the guts" to share our positioning statement on this forum. (What can I say? I'm shy ) But I certainly agree that it's extremely important to have a positioning strategy, even if you don't distill it into a terse positioning statement. Personally, I think positioning is far, far more important than the niche you choose. Just about any niche can be profitable -- but only if you position yourself right. And that's the real challenge of starting a business.

Though I won't share it, we do in fact have a positioning statement. It's the tagline on our website, letting users know at a glance what we're about. It's the soundbite we give when reporters ask us to describe ourselves. It's what I tell people my business is about when they ask what I do for a living.

Obviously, it's not something that you need to use as publicly as we do but developing one is relatively easy and quick so I think it's well worth the time investment -- even if you're the only person who ever sees it.

Good points. By the way, the fact you have one shows you have guts IMO , whether you choose to share it or not. The main thing is you have one and can see the benefits of having one. That puts you ahead of most people, especially Internet Marketers.

I realize this is not one of those sexy subjects people like to discuss. Plus, Gurus seldom (if ever) include it in their over priced courses and newbies never ask about it in forum questions.

But it's one of those details people always trip over and wonder at their disappointing results. Then they scurry around trying to fix problems, not realizing a brand positioning strategy could've helped them avoid many problems.

So, if one person reads this and decides to at least research the subject on their own. Plus, create a brand-positioning strategy - my mission is accomplished.

Here's a entertaining but powerful video that makes the point. Enjoy
