Have freebies worked for you?

Has anyone had success by adding on free 'functions' to their websites?

I am not referring to 'cheesy' freebies. Rather, I'm referring to the following:

- free advice
- free assessment tools with instant results
etc...

Did your website attract or maintain more traffic after you had put these
functions in use?

Thanks

Those are great to get on top of digg, reddit and other social bookmarking sites. Calculators, generators, simple tools that solve a problem, extensive references. You need to present them in a way that makes them appealing for these audiences. It's also a great way to get links.

Having a freebies section help get traffic but people who look for free stuff generally won't make you any sales.
