Amazon Affiliate Denial - They can't open my site?!

Hi everyone,

Lurked here for a while, appreciate any help you can provide. I submitted for an Amazon Affiliate membership and got a generic denial letter that stated only that "It is not mutually beneficial".

I called support and they said the real reason they cannot approve me is that they are unable to open my site. I contacted godaddy, and they said all the settings appear fine. They had no issue opening the site. It works for me on all my devices in all browsers I can think of.

I called Amazon back, and they said they still can't open it. I am totally at a loss, I don't know what to do. Really want to fix this!

Site:
http://ranchhousereno.com

Any ideas ?!

Was really hoping to try and resolve this without hiring anyone - not exactly a big operation! Just me! Not expecting to make a lot off of this, really anything would give me motivation!

I just thought maybe there was something I could look at to try and fix this

Yes - I gave you the right one. No offense taken, as I said, brand new at this. Any input is welcome. Especially if it fixes the amazon affiliate issue haha.

So far I've received a few private messages with people offering different affiliate programs.

I am really hoping to get the Amazon Affiliate program working, but haven't gotten anywhere yet.

Nobody else has experienced this? Any help would be appreciated!

PLEASE report each of them to the moderators, using the little red triangle shown in the top-right-hand corner of all private messages.

Nobody can do anything about "P.M. spam" if people won't report it, and reporting it really does help to make the forum a better place for all of us (apart from the spammers).

I'm sorry (and slightly surprised) that you haven't had more replies, yet, to your thread. I remember seeing this exact issue raised and quickly resolved in a thread only a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure the answer turned out to be something trivially easy, but damned if I can remember what it was (which isn't much use to you! ). And without the search function working properly, I also can't find that thread (I've tried, several times; sorry ).

I can imagine how intensely frustrating this situation must be, especially since it must have a "simple answer".

Thank you so much for your reply! I am just happy to see someone that actually has heard of this problem before.

I noticed I couldn't find it searching and now I have a better idea why. I thought I was all alone with this problem, so I actually feel a little better now.

I guess I'll just hope it dawns on you, or someone else who happens to see the post!

I've been racking my brains, but my memory, concentration and attention-span are really poor at the moment, and I just can't answer it. (That strongly suggests that it was some "minor technical detail", because I almost never manage to remember those ). I'm just hoping someone else from that thread will quickly see this one and post in it. Have been thinking that ever since seeing your original post.

(I know a lot of people spell it as "wracking" my brains, but I don't think that's right.)

Still no success. Anyone know anything about this issue? Really hoping this rings a bell for someone out there. Getting kinda desperate.

Looks like you're using wordpress, do you have any plugins installed to restrict bots? Have you checked things like .htaccess or robots.txt? Maybe they're trying to load your site through an automated Amazon "bot" that is getting blocked.

      Yep, Wordpress hosted by GoDaddy.

I did not add any - so unless it comes with one by default, I have not done so.

      I just checked robots.txt using Robots.txt Checker

Results say no errors found. Is that a true test of the access?

On the phone, they said that they were just using Firefox. When I got transferred to a supervisor, he said they just use a normal browser but they couldn't open it.

The above is the most promising line of inquiry in my opinion. Unfortunately, without being able to reproduce the issue, it'll be almost impossible to diagnose, let alone fix. However, I can give you a few tips on how you might figure things out.

My main question is what exactly does it mean when Amazon is telling you that "they cannot open your site"? Is it:
      • They get a 404 error? This could just mean that they're looking at the wrong page)
      • They get a 403 error? This would probably indicate a configuration issue with the website. As mentioned above, it could be your .htaccess file (though not your robots.txt) or the way GoDaddy has configured the httpd.conf file (which I'm guessing you don't have any access to).
      • Just a blank page? This could be a WordPress issue.
      • They are unable to reach the site at all? This could be a firewall issue either on GoDaddy or Amazon's part. If this is the case, see if Amazon can 'ping' your site.
      • Something else entirely?

If you can, get the exact error message that Amazon is seeing (if any). Also, for kicks, I'd have Amazon try to view a static page or image such as http://ranchhousereno.com/wp-content..._wallpaper.jpg. If they can see that image, this could point to a problem with the way WordPress itself is configured; if they can't, it's likely a web server or firewall issue as indicated above. But again, if they can't try to get the exact error message they are seeing.

Also, if you have SSH access and access to the web server logs (I haven't used shared hosting in years, so I can't say whether you do or not) it can also be very informative to "tail" your website's log files to see if you can see anything cropping up when Amazon tries to view your page. You'd do that by typing in:
      Code:
      tail -f /path/to/logfile
Often your log file is located at /var/log/httpd/access_log, but on shared hosting it's almost certainly different. If you don't have access to your log file, you might be able to ask GoDaddy to check your logs for errors. I have no idea what sort of support they provide.

Anyway, sorry I couldn't provide a definitive answer, but hopefully you'll at least be able to try some new things out that'll point you in the right direction!

        @kilgore

You've given me a lot to work with in your reply. Thank you for taking the time to write that all out. I will try and move forward with Amazon to get a better idea of the error they are getting.

I resubmitted for affiliate status, so if/when they deny it again, I will be able to call back and find out. I will report back when I have more information (good or bad!)

It is either your ,htaccess something in it blocking amazon
Your nameservers not set up right
    Your robots.txt looks ok

Try deactivating all your plugins and see if they can see it, worth a try.

I can deactivate everything, that is easy enough.

What do you see that is wrong with the nameserver?

I am a newbie at this, here's what I see in the Name Server settings:

      Is that not correct?

It is probably not a domain server problem or it would be more than Amazon affected.

People in this thread can reach your site fine with any browser so they are being properly routed by DNS.

And Amazon said they are using Firefox so it is probably not a blocked bots issue either.

As kilgore said, your first step would be to get the exact error or condition that Amazon is seeing to get an idea of where the problem could be occurring.

Did you double-check that they have the correct URL? i.e. they aren't doing something stupid like ranchousereno

I did have them read it off to me. They spelled it correctly when they read it back to me. I know it was correct on my application that I submitted.

I am really hoping it was just that simple - I triple checked it on the second one to make sure I'm not an idiot.

I am happy you mentioned it isn't the DNS because I spent a couple of hours today researching to figure out what the problem with the name server was. Anything off the list is helpful.

Actually, I had thought of that too. But whether or not the folks at Amazon typed in your URL correctly, you may wish to purchase ranchousereno.com (with one 'h') and point it to ranchhousereno.com. I imagine it could be a mistake a lot of people might make.

I can see your main site (ranchhousereno.com)... but the link you provided in your main post takes me to a blank page.

The URL looks like this when I click your link: www.ranchhousereno.com&guard=cc90-5219

Would you expect "&guard=cc90-5219" to be appended to your URL?

Just received an email from amazon saying:

"Congratulations, your application to the Amazon.com Associates Program
    has been approved. "

    I am elated!

Is there only one approval that you receive, or do you get multiple approvals before you are through their process?

I don't want to update all my links on my site just to get another denial

Thank you all for your help, it was invaluable!
