How to hire a world-class copywriter?

Hey all,

I'm looking to invest into a really, really good copywriter. I'm a little lost... I don't think posting an ad on angel.co or some other job site is going to attract top level copywriters.

1) Where would be the best place to look?
2) What salary would a top level copywriter command?

Any help at all appreciated. Thank you!

If you can pay 100K then get a cheap copywriter to write a sales letter to get the big guns, mail it to them, with 100K fake bill lurking outside the letter and see which one bites. All you need is a dozen letters mailed and you can get one of them to be your copywriter, chances of success 80+ %

I would suggest going right to the source. The very best copywriters are lone eagles and don't have middlemen or work for copywriting services. They are their own brands. I have heard of $50K sales letters. But that's not a bad price for an offer that brings in millions.

The best in copywriting, design, UX, etc... are worth more to a firm than they can generate from clients on their own.

That's a solid step in the right direction. Here's the thing..... Great copy writers do not advertise because they don't need to.

You need to start "turning over stones".

By that I mean, study the "rock star" copy that you know converts. Then, be as persistent as hell and ASK WHO WROTE THEIR COPY.

            Good copy writers are "underground".

You need to ask around..... not look at websites.

See a high converting promo.... stalk the owner of it until you find out who wrote their copy.

It's not cheap but it's the best investment you can make.

Nice suggestion and very practical. World-class copy writer usually charge $5k and $10k for a small project, or an hourly rate of between $400 and $1,000/hour or more, but it will all be worth it.

Keep in mind: the best of the best don't generally advertise much. They don't need to. They're booked out for months.

Start out by asking your friends in the IM world. Likely, they know of a hardcore copywriter who will follow your instructions and meet your needs.

Watch out for the many poor writers out there and make sure to request samples.

If you want truly good content, you are going to have to pay for it. For example, if a client of mine needs blog-filler or tier 1 link content, then I charge as low as $2 per 100 words. However, authority money-site content and sales pitches can start at $5 per 100 and reach up to $10 per 100 or more.

When you read an article in a print magazine, do you think the writer was only paid $20 for 1000 words? No, some are paid hundreds, and some are paid thousands, per 1000 words.

It depends on your budget, reach of contacts, etc. Again, start with your inner circle and see if anything pops up.

My apologies. Need to keep an eye on two year old threads getting bumped by sig file noobs. Isn't there something available to limit this phenomenon other than our own diligence (which I neglected here) to keep two and three year old threads from being bumped? gja

Top copywriters get to pick and choose their clients carefully, and with that in mind, the salary may be less than you think or what people have said.

#1-It depends on your company, How long have you been around? What type of product are you offering? How big is the market potential? How do you currently market?

#2- Sure, there is going to be some out of pocket money, maybe a huge chunk, but if you know what you are doing, then they might want a piece of the action. Some copywriters have been paid for several years on the work they did for a product which continues to sell.

#3-You might need a specialist. For every one known copywriter in a given industry, there are probably several more you have never heard of. Some established writers are known for their financial promotions, supplements, Biz-Op, specialty product, jewelry, etc., etc.

#4-What is the time line? When do you hope to have the promotion live? A year is a short period of time, and if hiring the writer is the last thing done, the best ones won't touch it (with a couple of exceptions) because it shows a lack of understanding of the market dynamics.

Without giving us details, it would help if we had a general idea of the market, the time line and company.

I have on my desk a Rolodex of the top 75 copywriters out there, and I'd bet that 65 of them haven't been heard of by most people.

The last question and maybe the most important one is, why do you think you need one of the best or top writers for your project?

Your answer, a considered one, will tell most experienced copywriters a lot about you and your company. Probably all they would need to know whether to take you seriously or not.

I worked for a major company. They were paying the main copy writer over one million per year. He was worth every penny. Get the best and forget the rest. Maybe you can learn the process. Look at the product descriptions of your competitors. What do they say. Time to get up to speed is now.

I get a kick out of what some posters consider "world class".

There aren't that many truly world class copywriters out there, and they don't have to get out of bed for $5k or $10k. The best of the best tend to work on a fee + royalty basis. Think $100k + 2-5% of sales generated by the campaign.

You find these superstars by networking and gaining an introduction.

87% of whatever copy you want has already been done for years which is where your paid copywriter is going to source his info..

You could try the website copyordie.com. You can get a sales letter from there for about $300. I know of people who have paid $10,000 for sales copy if you really want to spend money on one. As far as top tier copywriters go, I think Mike Marin is known for being one.
