Is it fine to promote a facebook fan page sharing flyers?

Hi there,

I have just created a new fan page and I am planning to put its links on tranches of classic white papers (A4 cut) that I will give to people (18 - 30) in the street that I believe are part of my audience.

Also, since this will be my first time I would like to know if it is a normal practice.

Thank you!

Erick

Not only is this fine, it can be very effective.

Think beyond handing out flyers, though. Too much effort. Think about where you can put advertising materials and receive passive traffic. Also: target areas specifically aimed at your offer and hand them out or deliver. If the EPC from doing so warrants it, consider outsourcing the process as I do. You've hit onto a very powerful means of traffic generation. I can't spill the beans entirely, but you're on the right track.

Thank you. In fact, for health and fitness purpose, I walk (since few days) at least 2 hours a day (when going to a library where I use to work from with my laptop). Additionally, since in the library I use to work from is mainly full of students, I was wondering if I should equally give flyers there but I believe it maybe better to not do this since I use to meet the same people everyday.

I use a number of different offline methods. Take it from me - they can be massively effective. You're starting out with the most simple kind, but as you progress, and as you see returns and get your system down, I advise you to expand your efforts into other offline systems. The traffic can be big, untapped, and targeted.

        Keep at it!

You could post a flyer near the university (on a tree or at the bus station - if it's allowed).

    • This kind of offline marketing certainly works, but it's very time consuming and not really scaleable.

To increase your results, you would have to constantly be out there pounding the pavement.

Leafleting is done a lot in all cities, and a lot of people will throw things away shortly after receiving it.

Like you said, you are planning to give to people who are "probably" your target audience. This is a better approach and just giving to everyone on the street.

That would not be targeted at all.

Anyway, try to find a place where your target market is, and JUST focus on that area.

Yes, definitively. But maybe I should focus on several target market areas (3 local universities, tube stations, etc).

Exactly. It can work for sure but it can be time consuming. Use your time wisely and see of any ways you can take the ideas of flyers to another level of marketing.

Don't try to reinvent the wheels buddy.

If you were looking at promoting a product with high commission that would be worth it but a fan page, hell NO!

With only $100 you can promote your Fan Page on Facebook and reach over 200,000 people. If you can't afford the $100 i suggest you work for it instead of the street flyer distribution.

  • Don't do it. It's a dumb idea. Putting that much time into creating and distributing flyers to untargeted people in the hope of getting them to a fan page, where you then have to do even more work to get them onto your email list... is not savvy marketing.

    There's too much noise.

If you want to do the flyer thing: put them into library books, magazines etc - related to the niche... and have the links pointing to a sign up page for your email list.

Or... listen to others telling you to do the fan page thing - and come back to me in a couple of months time so I can tell you I told you so.

I think the best way would be social media marketing if you have that available to you. If not, no biggie. I would definitely try to have some money saved back so you can make it happen though!

With any facebook fan page, I would definitely make sure you got some money saved back to promote it!

Is this a "normal practice"? Well...
    1. I see a lot of restaurants and other bricks and mortar businesses promoting their Facebook pages offline, so using offline methods to promote an online presence certainly is.
    2. I've never really heard of anyone handing out fliers to promote their Facebook page, so that specifically may not be a normal practice
    3. Who cares if it's normal? The real question is does it work? My gut is telling me that it might help you to go from 0 - 100 followers, but it probably won't help you go from 100 - 1000 followers. It's just too work intensive. But what do I know? I've certainly never tried it.

So I guess my advice is, give it a whirl but don't depend on it. Part of being an entrepreneur is taking chances, being creative and trying things that either (a) have never been tried or (b) everyone tells you are a bad idea.

Every entrepreneur who is any good at all fails a lot -- if you're truly innovative failure is natural. The fact is that there are good reasons why most ideas that haven't been tried haven't been tried or people tell you that certain ideas are bad ideas. But sometimes the conventional wisdom is wrong.

The key is to minimize the damage from your inevitable failures. So don't spend 1,000 hours or $100,000 on fliers (though somehow I doubt that was what you intended anyway). Instead, print out 100 fliers and spend just a single afternoon handing them out. Then evaluate your results. (Evaluation is key here as in everything entrepreneurial!) Did you get new followers? How many? Was it worth the effort you put in? If so great! If not why not? (Maybe fliers were a good idea, but the fliers you used weren't well designed.)

But anyway, stay creative. Stay innovative. And don't be afraid to fail. But be sure that you learn from your failures!

    Good luck!
