As per title really. Anyone with any experience using forum software? My hosting provider offers phpbb, and a few other ones.

Anyone here offer any feedback in terms of ease of setting up and using, flexibility, features?

Hope someone can share their thoughts with any softwares or scripts, experiences good or bad!

Kind regards

Alan

I have a forum which runs on phpBB 3.0.x.

I didn't actually set it up myself, but I think there's probably nothing easier. I'm technophobic and incompetent but can manage all the Admin functions I need with absolutely no problem at all. It's so easy that it's Lexyproof (and when it comes to software, that's really saying something ).

I hear people saying that it's less flexible than other "standard forum software" but I've never really seen any sign of that, myself, or run into any particular difficulties with it. It has all the "features" (and countless more) I'm ever going to need, however many members I get. The features are explained here: https://www.phpbb.com/about/features/

I've hosted a couple of phpBB forums. I didn't have any problems with the script and it was pretty easy to figure out the back end. You might also check out Simple Machines. I recall some preferring it over phpBB, though I don't now recall why.

    I have and do.

Go with VB. The best all-rounder, still.

Our SowPub forum uses vBulletin 3.6, been up and running for 15 years.

I've used phpbb, Simple Machines and even a few odd other ones.

Best advice from me, it depends on how it will be used. If I were building a legacy forum, I'd use current vBulletin with special hosting

But, if I just needed a basic forum to talk to my peeps, phpbb works just fine.

I've also had several MemberGate forums too, which is good if you are offering a membership site.

I'm not all that keen on simple machines, but, today, it is hard to tell them apart if you use Softaculous and want a free forum.

They have some pretty cool forum scripts on codecanyon.net

I use vanilla forums, super easy to customize, set up, and manage.

    Cheers,
