Is this a good way to get links/traffic?

I am planning on opening an etsy store to sell some of my downloadable products.

I was thinking of creating some samples for personal use and offering them for free with the requirement that the user give credit to me in the form of a link back to my site.

Is that a legitimate way to get links?

My goal in doing this would be to get more traffic to my site by getting the links and also by having a free offer that people would talk about, and it would also let people sample my product for free before buying.

Suggestions?

Giving stuff away is a great way of getting people interested, so go for it. Ask them to share your store on their social networks or blogs if they have.

Sure, that sounds like a great plan.

Just be sure to investigate the other free and paid ways to get the word out.

That is probably one of the best Internet marketing strategies that you can do. So yes it is a great way to get links and traffic. people love freebies and it will help them find more of your products in the future.

Great idea, I would just make sure you have a way to actually check if people are doing it. Otherwise, a lot of people will just take the free offer and leave.

It is an excellent way to get links. And it wood work once you provide good value.

Yes good idea, and as you say, get them to give you a link on a website of social media in return.

Have a look at other traffic strategies too, such as article syndication, guest blogging, creating your own social media presence (FaceBook Page and Group, get involved in other relevant groups, Google+ page, Pinterest images, Tumblr, and all the others), blog commenting, a bit of social bookmarking (don't do too much of that else you can do yourself more harm than good), make your own relevant blogs with links to your work, etc etc.

Will you track everyone who uses your free content, and don't give you the credit? Do you think this free marketing strategy is better and more efficient than forum marketing? Since you plan on opening a digital products store, that means you would have to create a ton of content for each individual product. This could take 180 days (literally - if you're doing it yourself).. plus you would have to market each product individually.

I would devise a simpler business idea. Because truthfully, it doesn't matter what you sell online. You could have a supplier in Hong Kong who can give you PS4's for unheard of low prices... and still be broke if you don't even know how to market them. Sure your first inclination would be to upload on Ebay/Amazon first... but so are the other 3028 people selling the same thing.

Find a simpler way to make money man. Make it easy for yourself, and make sure the profits are good for you too. By the way... how much are you going to charge people to purchase your downloadable products on your site?

You will find out that most of your users don't have a website of their own to add your link. Another great potion won't be willing to put your link on their site while some might do and remove it in a short while.

It's okay if you are looking at link diversity or some sort of traffic which may never come. My best bet is to guest blog or make contextual backlinks.

Sounds like a great idea!! Give out some free samples so that they know what they are dealing with.

If they like it then they will definitely buy. Make a Facebook page if you don't yet have one and offer your products there and give valuable information as well.

I don't think Etsy gets traffic by itself to your page. Don't you have to do out of website advertising to your etsy store?
