I own a little forum and get spam maybe once a week. With the damn 300 word post with links to shoes, jewelry etc..

Dont they realize that their spam post will get removed, so what is the point?

Most are doing it for backlinks. They're betting that the link will stay long enough for the SEs to give them credit for it.

Some do it for the money - look at all those "I'll post in a million forums for $5" type offers. They don't care whether the post lives or not, as long as they get paid.

Then again, some people are just terminally stupid, and there's nothing left to weed them out of the herd...

    Think about it...

You have a piece of software.
You load up 20,000 forums into it.
    You insert your spam message.
    The software spins it.
    You click submit.

    It takes seconds.

Some folks do it for backlinks, others do it for cheap, instant traffic.

Just because I know about it, though, doesn't mean I do it. I just make it my business to know the ins-and-outs of the industry.

I could go into more details about this topic, but best not to give ideas to the wrong element.

They are doing it for Traffic and Backlinks.

Forum is like a real community with people good and bad that needs policing.

It's been decided entirely in accordance with the thought-processes underlying so many other things one sees "in internet marketing": large numbers of people believe things that aren't true, copy things that don't work, and make decisions according to their perception that "This must work, otherwise hundreds of other people wouldn't be doing it all the time".

Much of it's automated, anyway, or at least semi-automated I think: there isn't a lot of "thought" behind individual instances of it, at all.

I own a little niche forum with around 7,500 members, and get spam maybe twice a year - but I have moderator-activated profiles, rather than member-activated: nobody's profile is activated until they confirm, by email, in reply to a welcoming email, that the forum's rules suit them. That gets rid of at least 99% of the serious spammers, even without charging $1 for membership (which might get rid of the other 1%, too).

They have scraping tools out there that will grab anything from forums to open email addresses and it's either done for backlinks or just to generate money.

Alexa Smith has some great ideas on how to keep your forum free of this kind of trash. But they are necessary steps to protect yourself and keep the quality of content on your forum high so that you can attract other people.

Remember that there are those at the bottom of the marketing food chain that will try and do anything just to get a quick view. It doesn't matter to them how irrelevant and spammy they look as long as they 'think' they're getting free traffic

Then they realize after time it's about being legit and no one has ever spammed their way to... Well maybe some. But no one wants to sacrifice their credibility for some money. What a newbie thing to do!
