The power of the giveaway...

I've been doing giveaways on my blog- and finding they are a fantastic way to bring in regular visitors- I've been doing physical giveaways that add value to my brand.

If you've got regular visitors, you've got a pitch point to companies to offer samples of their products. Using social networking to advertise it can lead them to have their brand recognised very quickly.

A week or so I offered thirty lipsticks- and had 325 hits in twenty five minutes. My competition message on twitter was retweets fourteen times , taking it out to an audience of approx fifteen thousand in the same time frame.

If you have a niche blog- consider offering giveaways for physical products that not only benefit you- but benefit some of your favourite brands too.

This is a great strategy. The more you give away valuable stuff, the more you will get as well.

    Hi Rachel,

    I love this method too.

I always do weekly giveaway contests in my blog on every Friday.

Being consistent is good for your subscribers so that there is regularity and
your readers will most probably check on your blog as the day approaches...

This creates a healthy level of readership and your readers somehow look
    forward to reading your blog.

What I do normally is I will ask around my IM friends if they can give away
some of their ebooks....most of them will agree...'

I also giveaway a few copies of my new products so it is a like pre-launch
and my subscribers get to know about it in advance and it creates
excitement because they get to submit their answers to the giveaway contests
and they want your product....!!! wohoho

We are doing giveaways on a regular basis - only requirement to be entered is a comment on our blog. I have been surprised at how many people actually comment and it gives us great insight into our customers.

    Excellent share, Rachel!

This is actually the first of the six rules of influence propounded by Robert Cialdini - the rule of reciprocation. According to the guy, people tend to return a favor. 72% of people surveyed, in fact, consider it a "necessity" to repay an act of kindness shown to them.

Freebies, giveaways, pre-sale bonuses - these are powerful, powerful marketing tools that will immediately compel people's loyalties to gravitate towards your business.

radio has been doing this for decades (giveaways). if you're in a market that gets rated by Arbitron, you'll notice that the station's big giveaways (promotions) always land w/in the ratings period - "during book". big markets are four times a year, smaller markets only twice.

As byzantine mentioned, according to Cialdini, triggering the law of reciprocation is a powerful persuasion tool that marketers can use to increase response. However, there is a big caveat to this that I have learned the hard way. If you can't sell it, don't offer it as a premium or inducement to buy.

I have marketed dud products that I have then tried to offer as incentives on other offers. Big mistake; if people won't buy something from you, then they won't value it for free either.

I have got an update- since starting this thread, I'm now working with two other higher trafficked blogs who are linking back into mine- because of my giveaways.
The best part is the feedback in the comments- I am fiding out alot about my readership and what they want.

    Rachel,

I also do giveaways quite often on my site and they are quite successful. How do you find and approach those whose products you want to give away?

I go through PR companies. They often have bags and bags of what they term "crap" left over from promotions.
I ring and explain my levels of traffic and my target audience. it's free publicity for them so they like it

That sounds great. I have been dong giveaways but mostly have come out of my own pocket for the items. I will do a search, but are there some top PR companies that you know of and/or work with? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post here.

My audience is generally younger (18-35) and are interested in entertainment, but also in saving money and getting free stuff. I have about 100,000 members on my site, so quite a large audience. What do you think?
