3-Tier Website; Good Idea or Old Hat?

I'm an SBI "grad" and will always be grateful for the education I got from 2 years with them. Many of you may know that they are proponents of a 3-tier website structure and I've got a site in the planning stages that I'll be building soon.

Is the 3-tier approach still viable? Or more to the point, is it effective for attracting and keeping visitors? Or would you recommend simply displaying articles/posts via a blog? Either way, I will be flying solo this time aboard a Wordpress platform.

If your topic is broad enough to support three tiers, it still works fine.

I tend to modify the idea just a bit, though.

On the home page, rather than direct linking the Tier 2 pages (Categories), I use snippets of a single handpicked post/article. One snippet per category.

Another way to do it is to modify the home page template to list the link and snippet from the most popular post in each category.
