Making your free ebook available to download. How?

Hi guys,

how/where do you put your free reports to be downloaded for your readers. I have a WP blog and wonder how should I do it.

Cheers

Assuming your report is in .pdf format, you just upload it to your site. Then give people the exact location of the file, ie.

    http:/ /yoursite.com/YourReport.pdf

I think a better way would be to create a subfolder, ie.

    http:/ /yoursite.com/subfolder

... and then to create a web page in that folder, explaining HOW they can download it. Here's an example:

How To Split Test With 10 Visitors A Day

That way there are no nasty surprises for the reader. You tell them what format the ebook is in, how to download and open it.

Then you upload your book to your site (like you'd do any other page or file), and link to it in the page.

Don't upload it to WP, upload it to your server.

      That's how I've done it.

Go to my site (in my signature) and you'll see how I've laid out the download for Scientific Advertising.

In that case, you'd be better off contacting your host for technical support... and tell them you're having problems.

Incidentally, I use a free program called FileZilla to upload files to my web host:

      Yeah I use it too...

I will contact them. I can upload files using FTP but not WP itself..

I have created a subdomain, uploaded the PDF..

So, all that you need to do now is to add a link to your WP to the download file. I'd add a page called Downloads and list them there. The link would be the filename added on to your domain name like so:

        filename = myfile.pdf
        domain name = mydomain.com
        folder = downloads

        The link would be: http://mydomain.com/downloads/myfile.pdf

I use a separate domain for all of my products. My robots txt file has the two lines below.
    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /
This way the search engines don't list it.

I also put all of my products for download into a zip file. That way the person stays on the page they download from, instead of going directly to the product. So many times, you click on a pdf file, and it loads right up on a new web page. You have more options when you can keep them on the page they download from.

I would use a subdomain and do it that way

for my blog for example it would be

    www.myeasyonlinepay.com/downloads/

then inside that folder i would then upload the pdf or zip file:

    www.myeasyonlinepay.com/downloads/freereport.pdf

It is also worthwhile putting at least one affiliate link on the page so that you can make money from it like this:

    www.dsm-publishing.co.uk/freegifts/wordpressdownloadpage.html

    Hope that helps

    kind regards

Or you can use a download WP plugin. Just got to add new plugin under the Appearance tab and search for "download plugin" Then you can upload and link right while you post. Its about the same amount of work as what everyone else is telling you to do. But, its another option.

If you are going to give away an ebook, you want to capture name and email addresses, so that you can build a mailing list. For that you need an autoresponder service. I use aweber which can be found at aweber.com. When your customers optin, you send them the link for the ebook. It encypts the link, so they cannot find the direct path. this ensures that your customers have opted in.
