Does anyone know of any decent video software that converts video from wmv to mp4 format?

Free or paid will do.

Any Video Converter is used my many and the free version works well. It's very easy to use and it does the job quite quickly.

  I often use YouTube for that. You can upload your video, and then in your video manager YouTube provides an MP4 for download.

One source I have used in the past and I have suggested to my students is:

Online Converter - Convert Anything

Now I do know there are size limits for things like Audio/video, but you can convert almost anything into anything here for free. Likely for larger stuff there is a small monthly/yearly fee, but still worth it to try out.

I've been using this FREE one for years, but it is very tricky to download.
There are a lot of "false" download buttons, but I guess that's how they
make their Adsense money.

You can use Any Video Converter, it works greatly. I use it and I am quite satisfied. Also, Windows movie maker is a good one to edit and add subtitles.
