How do you deal with Information Overload?

Does anyone else sometimes find it difficult to stay focused on one idea at a time?

My heads spinning with 100's of great ideas for marketing strategies and awesome product ideas but with all of the information out there and constant emails letting me know about all the new amazing software that can do stuff for you or save you hours of work, I must admit...it can become a little distracting to say the least

Does anyone else have the same problem and how do you help stay focused and stick to one idea at a time?

I look forward to hearing your replies

Thanks
Mark

Haha! Ray does have a point.

I just write down all the different ideas and cross them off the list ONE BY ONE.

I notice that most marketers like to have their fingers in many different pies at the same time. You can only eat one slice at a time. Same thing... and don't bite more than you can chew.

        I think I'm hungry.

Lol yeah maybe that's the problem, I do get HUNGRY a lot!

I suppose I won't know what works best until I've tried it and followed through with it until it's done, then check the results and find out which works best and is most profitable.

Kinda answered my own question here eh?

Thanks Christian yeah I did think about setting tasks/to do lists the night before so that the following day I can stick to them, take action and turn off all other distractions. Maybe this is the solution?

            Mark,

            Welcome to the forum!

Most people wanting to learn marketing experience the same overload. There are a million little details about methods, strategies, niches, sales tips, advertising and all the rest.

Remember this: you don't need to learn it all, know it all, or experience it all to make good money online. Why? Because there are endless methods and models that can be profitable. All you need is to find one that works for you!

Personally, I usually advise those who are brand new to begin by inventorying their skills, passions, life experiences, former training, hobbies, education, and "things they do well." By focusing on a skill or trait you have, you do four things:
            • Cut the learning time in your niche because you already have exposure and experience in the topic
            • Give yourself an advantage in the marketplace because you will be somewhat an "authority", an expert, compared to those selling in the same market that don't have your knowledge or training
            • You will have insight, know the jargon, and can speak intelligently on the topic
            • If you have a passion or talent in the topic you will stay interested and focused in it, especially in the early lean times while you're trying to build up your income - it will give you "staying power."
After you have done your inventory, it's very important to do market research into the topic you choose so that you will know where there is online demand by those in the niche.

New folks always think they can create demand for their product or service, regardless of what it is.

I say "hogwash." Demand is already either in the marketplace or it's not. So before you change off and dig into your topic . . . make sure you know that people who have money are interested in it. And not only that, you want to learn what those people are willing to spend their cash on to learn, or to solve a problem, or to satisfy some desire they have.

Understanding the demand in the marketplace allows you to then develop a product, book, service, or community that is focused on meeting the demand. Remember, always sell into demand, don't just take a chance of creating a web site, a product or service because you think it will be accepted and sell. The Internet is a graveyard of products and services that nobody wanted!

Sorry for the lengthy post. But this is how I would start. It doesn't have to take you a long time, but often new people just bolt out of the gate and bypass these important steps.

            The very best to you,

I typically sit down and try to select, which information is useful for my next step.

You can always try many things, and you will surely come across things you like, and things you don't like.

The best option is to do what you love, focus on it and leave everything else behind. If you feel like trying something different, go for it.

Good one the same thought struck me.

What have been doing is pick a few things write them in evernote put a check box on it and focus on getting it done all the information that I consume are for that task or goal and ignore the rest it's impossible to learn everything.

Long ago I realized no matter how much I learn I will die a ignorant who will not know much, so I only learn what I need (which is to much often and overwhelming) to get the job done. Why learn more it's never enough.

My advice made a goal and learn only what you need to make that goal a reality and ignore the rest you will be ignorant about most things and nothing you can do about it, there is not enough time in your life to learn everything it's impossible.

        Good luck.

    Hi Mark,

I think the key is to start very simple, and then to scale up.

Everybody seems to want to try EVERY marketing method and EVERY type of product when they first start - mostly just because there are so many options that CAN work.

Instead of sticking to one or two options until they work, people tend to jump around as soon as they find something difficult, or as soon as it doesn't work quickly enough for them.

Almost like a kid in a candy shop who wants every type of sweet, just because they can!

Focus must be a priority, that is why I like to work with a list of list of tasks to do every day, listed in priority order.

The internet is a very easy place to get distracted, and we must make sure that we don't shy away from tasks that we do not like to do just because it is easy. Set priorities and get on with the 20% that works, and not the 80% of fluff.

    My two pennies worth!

    Christian

      Thanks Steve,

It's weird you say this because just last night I was running through things in my mind and taking notes and I started organizing my thoughts by thinking:

"Ok first thing pick a niche and find a starving crowd so I'm selling or promoting to people that are already openly asking for help and willing to pay for information or physical products that will help them"

I have proven to myself that selling on Kindle works, my second book was selling 400-500 copies per month but at that stage I wasn't monetizing them or building my list, I know how to find books that are selling, optimizing your books to get found etc so maybe this is my forte?

Thanks SuperKC and AnimatorGuy too, I think you hit the nail on the head with reading less KC.

    I feel the pain.

My strategy is to focus on just two projects. One amazon and one adsence (to spread the risk).

First is content, for my amazon site I wrote it myself. Adsence is outsourced content.

Then traffic. Again I am building my own Amazon site links (aged domains+ mini site), and outsourcing the adsense site.

Its an interesting experiment. My goal it so spend 30% of my income on content, 30% seo and take 30% profit. That should give me a good a balance between time, income and most important growth.

I turn on the TV and watch Rachael Ray's 30 Minute Meals. Then i go and make something to eat. Then i go and drink about 1 liter of soda. Then i get in the bed and lay down and chill for about 1 hour. Then i get back on the computer and find more places to run ads. Most of my information overload comes from learning about *unexplored* free traffic methods. I figure the less free traffic methods i have the better. I've gone from 11 of them (which took me 7 hours to do all).... to only 2 (which only take me 30 minutes to do). Made a big difference in the quality of my life, and also to the 80% of my profits that 20% of the work does.

No matter what you do, just find the simplest, easiest path to take, and roll it til the wheels off.

    I like this question

I think it's a great sign when your head is spinning with ideas! But to focus, yeah, totally crucial for success. I think for one thing, to stick to one thing you have to dig deep. What seems to happen when you get distracted is that you think somehow you tapped all there is to tap on that idea. So you have "time" to do something else.

Say you did your product, did your launch, sales are rolling in. Okay, but now how can you expand them, expand the results you're getting? Keep digging, keep improving. Improve your product, your sales funnel, your marketing reach. It keeps it interesting and when other ideas fly in remember that chasing them will only hurt you. Focus is key to success. So instead make an idea journal...or spreadsheet.

Then rate the ideas, or in a spreadsheet come up with some of the things you need in an idea to feel really good about pursuing it. Score each idea and pursue the top ones first.

This is literally something I started doing and it's amazing how well it works. It keeps me focused too because when I think of trying one of the other ideas I remember why this one "won" and stay on task because it's reasons for winning literally outweigh the others.

PM me if you want the excel sheet template I created!! I'll share

Get stuff out of your head and on paper !

It truly is one of the most therapeutic ways that I know of to keeping you focused. It's sometimes called a brain dump.

I have different folders in my Evernote for ideas/marketing strategies and just general business thoughts. I think I have over 300 ideas in there so far for online businesses. Over 200-300 pages of marketing advice and over 500 pages of "business diary"/general business thoughts.

Now imagine if all that information was still running around my head.

Also, systems help A LOT with staying focused.

I recommend taking action in practice. It doesn't matter too much what you do, as long as yo do something. Ideally pick a method that is relatively fast and cheap to test, then just get on with doing it, and you'll learn some things. When you have learned all you can from one method, try another one, and at some point you'll have learned enough different bits from different methods that you can make something work well.

You could use what's important to you, to help choose which method to start with. For example, if you want a business (i.e. something that can be outsourced or sold) rather than a job, you need to choose only methods which realistically can be outsourced or sold, and reject any that rely on your unique skills.

Another criteria could be what you are good at and what you are bad at. For example if you are not one of those out-going personalities who can persuade anyone to do anything, then writing sales copy yourself is going to be a challenge (one reason being that your personality gets linked to whatever words you type, even if you copy someone else's words, the results YOU get will be different), so pick something that doesn't require you to persuade effectively, such as affiliate marketing (where you will be giving people information to help their buying decisions, rather than trying to sell them anything).

So, be very honest with yourself and write out what you are good at (and have experience in), and what you are bad at (or have no experience in). Then write out what you ultimately want from IM. Those lists will help you to narrow-down your choices and focus on what will get you what you want, as well as what stands a better chance of success for you personally.

    Hope that helps

    Chris

Pick one strategy and take ACTION!

With all the information available here and there, people often fall in following the shiny thing syndrome, they have take a few step in the treasure they just found but when another passes by, they quickly jump out of focus to chase that other one down.

One thing also that we could do to get where we want to be is the simple following what the experts are doing, we don't really need to reinvent the wheel that much, pick one successful person and study how he is doing his business and maybe use that to pattern yours. if they are successful doing what they do then maybe you will too.

Whatever it is make sure to always to focus and highly recommended that you turn off all the time killers like TV, Facebook etc.

P.S.: did I tell you that going to the gym helps? do some exercise to develop discipline and determination.

I have been there, and I have done that. trust me.

If I had to give you one trick, I would do this:

Stop reading what you know are emails that are only going to sell you more stuff.

I have an old email that is filled with email promotions, and occasionally I read through them, but really, I don't do it as much.

When I sign up to newsletters and other marketer's lists, I just use a separate from the email that I read daily. This way, I don't get bombarded with tons of emails in my own email.

It gets very distracting at times, but this is the best thing I have done to stop buying things I really do not need.

      Hey Mark,

It's not information overload...It's information OVERCONSUMPTION that's the problem. It's like obesity is not a problem of having too much junk food around. It's actually EATING IT.

      So here is my solution:

      1) Prepare your next day the day before what your must 3 priorities.
      2) Make a list of all the things you need to do, choose 3-5 the most important priorities that will move the needle of your business further, and throw the rest of the list away.
      3) FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME. No distractions. Turn off the phone, close the door, shut off social media etc.
      4) Set a timer to go off for 60-90 minutes and focus on PRODUCING without any distractions, for 60-90 minutes. Take a short break and do it again. put relaxing music if it helps. focusatwill.com this website can help with focused music
      5) Make sure to eat healthily, drink, do sports in the middle...

That's basically it... If you do just that yuo will triple your productivity, guaranteed!

      Hope that helps

Thank you all so much for your great advice

Some of which I am already doing like writing it all down, even if I don't read what I've written down I find that it helps embed it in my brain and I can remember it all rather than just reading it and doing nothing else.

I recently thought, rather than just writing it all down on paper and doing nothing with it,maybe I should write it all down or make videos of it on a personal blog?

I've been so busy learning stuff and creating stuff I've never thought about having a blog!

I have been putting stuff into action by writing and publishing books as well as creating products, I am recently concentrating on working with my business partner on a few voiceover products (he's a pro voiceover with 40 yrs experience)

but all the other stuff just kinda gets left, so would it be a good idea to put it all on my blog?

I've just started creating one...is it ok to put links on here to my blog/website or opt-in pages? (not affiliate links)

p.s forgive me if this is a daft question

I suggest stop focusing on shiny objects or new opportunities. Also, stop buying any product that does not relate to your current project.

If you think these opportunities are golden opportunities that you are missing by avoiding them, you are wrong.

You will keep getting new and "exciting" opportunities one month later, 6 month later, or even 2 years later, from today.

Mark, what you have to do is be completely honest with yourself and your abilities. You might see 100s of cool ideas, but if you're honest, you can only realistically do 1-2.

So you use complete honesty to keep yourself focused on only 1-2 things that you can actually do...rather than get caught up in all the conjecture and "opportunities" that you see out there...but have no chance in hell to actually implement and do.

This is by far the best way to deal with information overload...complete self-honesty.

I had the same problem the first 3 and a half years that I was in this business.

If I was you, I would focus on a proven business model that has stood the test of time.

There are plenty of them, but I have chosen to go the product creation, list building route.

If you do decide to go the list building route, there are only a few things that you need for the automation aspect of it. That would be an autoresponder, hosting, domain/domains,page builder(if you're not good with HTML, which i'm not) and some tracking software.

Those are just the tools that I use.

You also want to keep things simple and to not over complicate things and just keep busting your tail.

There is so many WSO out there with couple (if not many) of them being wanna be guru that use PLR materials to put up a new WSO.

I got tired of this junk.

One day, I just woke up, delete all my WSO except one of them and I focus at this only. I kept the one who made the more sense to me and the one I like the most doing which is important too. If you are in the IM business, you should be picking something you like or else you'll find your next 5-10-20 years very long.

That's how I dealt with information OL.

I know what you mean. This is the downside to being ambitious because we want to be creative and implement stuff in OUR own business, a privilege we don't have in jobs.

I personally write my ideas in my marketing notepad and if it is related to the project I have at hand I implement; if not, I leave it there and will refer to it later when it makes sense for me to implement.

The best way to stay focused is to write down your plan of attack; write down how you will be driving traffic, etc.. Never spread yourself to thin and master one skill at a time... something that's taken me a while to nail down but this is how I handle it now.

As for the latest software etc... I think you mean Shiny Object syndrome ... that's something you need to snap out of by yourself. It took me months to snap out of it but now I won't buy anything unless it relates to what I am doing or is a tool which I cannot go without in my business!

To get rid of information overload you must stick to one system and make it work..It ain't easy because of the distractions but thats the key..

        Hi Mark

Ive not been able to read over all the other replies as i'm out of office so apologies if what i say has already been covered.

My heads spinning with 100's of great ideas for marketing strategies and awesome product ideas
I can totally relate to this and think the majority of IM'ers will have experienced this problem too.

The best piece of advice i can give you is

Clear your mind! i know this is easier said than done, but write your ideas down on a word pad and put it in a folder called ideas! - This way you can re-visit your ideas whenever you feel. I bet a point will come when you start removing some of these ideas from the list too and you will say to your self "what was i thinking"

Also you say you have 100's of great ideas! What ive found in the past is.... what seems like a great idea in your mind isnt such a great idea in reality!

What i suggest you do is look at your ideas, do some research on them and see if there is a demand for it, if there is put them on a short list and do some more research! Dont under estimate how much work it will take to get each one off the ground! be realistic.

Some of my biggest mistakes have been taking too many projects on and not putting 100% in to any of them resulting in creating nothing other than a pile of shit!

Honestly, pick something you know, pick something there is demand for and forget everything else! put 100% of your effort in to that and you will make it!

Stop reading other peoples claims to success, methods, etc etc on forums! It will just make you question everything your currently doing and make you wonder if you chose the right direction!

Dont go buying WSO after WSO! no matter how much hype there is about it! you will end up out of pocket! (In my opinion there is too much hype and little proof with so many things in the IM game its utter bollocks, im just waiting for my inbox to be full of people whinging at me for saying this now..)

when you have reached a level of success with that project MAYBE look at starting another! and replicate your success in this.

but with all of the information out there and constant emails letting me know about all the new amazing software that can do stuff for you or save you hours of work, I must admit...it can become a little distracting to say the least
STOP READING LOADS OF DIFFERENT METHODS. Simply pick a method that you like the sound of and think you can do and go do it! You WILL make mistakes along the way but you will learn from them! but until then you're effectively just filling your head with more ideas and getting snowed under resulting in - doing nothing because you dont know what to do!

Personally i stay away from "softwares" to save hours of work! because they don't tend to help you create a long term business! And to be honest, learning about using them correctly is just going to fill your head with even more information!!

t joined the WarRoom yet but I'd imagine it's worth it?
IMO that money could be much better spent. That money will buy you a lot of visitors to your squeeze page.

I've found that if you are focused on driving traffic to your page and working on increasing opt-ins and conversions then the rest just doesn't seem as interesting.

"Information Overload" for lack of a better term, usually goes away when you start making money with something you focused on long enough. Of course, some people never reach that point.

So the answer to the OP is; FOCUS!

    ...or fail.

So maybe I'll stick with the product creation? I've recently finished a JV product (not sure if I'm allowed to post a link to it,I'm new to the forum) it's my own product not an affiliate one.

      It's voiceovermasterclass.com

Could I get your feedback on it please guys?

I'm still thinking of editing the sales page

      Thanks

The point I was trying to make is; a lot of people won't promote a page with a link to the affiliate program. It's a "leak." Also you have an "external links" link which is also a "leak."

Affiliates who can actually make sales, have a lot of attractive offers to promote, incentives and prizes, etc. You have to make your opportunity as attractive as possible. Otherwise you'll end up with a bunch of newbie affiliates.

This may sound a bit out there but I suggest you find a place in nature to sit and ponder.

The mind gets locked into a certain rhythm and nature or a natural setting resets the brain and allows it to function more effectively.

      Then...
Think about what you will get up and do without fail with motivation everyday.

It's strange you mentioned this Brett because just a few nights ago I took a drive to the local store to pick up a few things and help clear my head, on the way back I parked up on a ridge overlooking my town. I got out of the car and it was actually quite an impressive view, it was quite dark and I could see all of the lights and even the sports stadium lit up. It made me look at it all and really think...

I got back in the car, turned on the notes app which types as I talk and ended up pretty much writing an entire book draft as well as coming up with some excellent new ways of doing things

So, "No" the idea of getting out and finding somewhere to spend time to think isn't such a "out there" idea at all

Here is a thought, How do you deal with suggestions from warriors who are offering suggestions about information overload when they are also victims of information overload?

Opps, sort of makes you think, You said it in the first line of the post, Focus.

Create a plan, (get help) execute that plan.

There are some great suggestions, (not judging here at all)

One of the things I have noticed is that excitement and overconfidence can create an issue with product adoption.

To create success in selling products online, you have to analyze the need and the desire of what the product provides.

Find a need, consider the desire for the solution which the product provides.

    (Is there a huge demand?)

I analyze WSO products all the time and some of them fail not because of preparation but because they failed to understand the market.

In marketing anyone can sell just about anything, however there are ways to look into the "crystal ball" and predict the demand, its not bullet proof but if you do not ask these kinds of questions before you begin to market your product, you could be in for a rude awakening.

One last thought, avoid the gimmick.

People do not like to be tricked, fooled or forced to pay for a product they do not need.

Continuity is dead, not only because it is a bad marketing strategy but primarily because it is a method that does not produce long term customers.

Think about continuity this way, why should you make a few bucks from selling someone elses products when you can create a better product and sell it yourself.

Solutions are what buyers want, not promises and not tricks.

I stay focused by picking one and working on it until it's finished. I don't believe information overload is a real thing, more of an excuse for not getting things done. It takes the place of, "I'm too busy" or "I don't want to", etc.

Consuming information isn't "doing" anything. Make time for it but don't use it against yourself.

Those tons of ideas going crazy inside your brain should be listed down one by one. After that, focus on one and then move on to another. Start with five then ten and hopefully all your ideas would then be inside your memory storage without you going crazy with information overload.

I watched a very successful Warrior leave this forum and focus on business, only checking back once in a while. He was more successful that way.

Taking a clue I backed off. I used to post a lot and read even more. There are too many angles, too many ways to make money and they are sound great when what you're doing becomes routine and boring.

We have to find joy in what we do. We have to find happiness in serving people with great products and services. There is more than enough money in every corner to make a great living.

I think some of us are simply information junkies looking for the next fix. We have shelves of books and courses that we couldn't wait to arrive, but now gather dust. The information contained in them is golden but we have not actually implemented most of it.

I'm not immune but am perhaps the worst offender.

    Here's a tact I'm working with.

    Outline your lifestyle.
Do you enjoy meeting people, want to work alone, in groups, etc.
Where do you want to live?
    What is your day like?
How much income do you want?
What do you want to look back on when you are on your death bed? Regrets, accomplishments?

Example: You love to ski and want the freedom and income to do so. You want to be able to ski anytime you wish without commitments. You love to stand in front of people and talk. You want a $15,000 a month income.

In that case you can rule out certain things that do not fit. Being a real estate agent may not afford the time. Having a retail store locks you into a location. You get the drift. Read Tim Ferriss and the idea of a muse if you want "the internet lifestyle"

Mark, I didn't read all the posts so I hope someone else hasn't already said this.

I have found research invaluable, and have suffered the same problem of not knowing where to start. But for me the key was just to get started and not worry about how "good" my finished product was, because it can be refined and improved. Once you have your product and start to sell it, it really gets you motivated to improve, and it's a great experience.

We created a product that I sold on Ebay for about 5 years and we had a nice second income. Having had that experience is awesome, because I know I CAN make money online.

Currently I am trying to get another website going and I am having a hard time budgeting my time between my new 2 year old, my offline business and creating my website, and figuring out what direction I am trying to go.

What helps me now, is to work on it as much as I can even if I am not ready to go live with what I am working on.

I have identified my first steps, and I continue to refine those. I started recording some audio for my website, and I load it into my Ipod to listen to while working offline and driving, that way I can keep the ideas flowing and the creative process going and making tweaks to what I am doing. Also, I don't get discouraged or give up, because I am certain I can achieve the goals I have set!

In short what I am working on is getting a video recorded for my squeeze page, focusing on what message I am trying to convey to my viewers, for example what would get them to opt-in, and thinking about what some of my email content will be for the email list.

Once that is done, I'll worry about focusing my attention on other details, like traffic and converting those opt-ins into sales!

I recommend designing systems for coping with it. Limit your intake to the few sources that matter most, and then have a specific system you follow for handling the information you do take in.

Also, as a rule of thumb, never let your information intake exceed your ability to apply said information.
