Which hosting plan should i get?

Okay I don't know the difference.

So there is shared hosting and there is VPS and then there is dedicated server.

Im guessing dedicated server is like those you see in the movies where they have one "cpu" dedicated to you.

So whats the difference between VPS and shared hosting.

Or rather let me put it this way.

My needs : I just need hosting for my website that host my educational videos within my membership site. Its not gonna get millions of hits (at least for now), but I need it to load fast.

I thought a shared hosting plan would suffice, and it was doing fine, then recently my landing page is loading slow.

So for just a simple membership site, do I need a vps or shared hosting is good enough, just that I need to find a good hosting provider.?
If so, which do you recommend.

If you want the best of both worlds send me a PM. Your welcome to use my dedicated server, which I hardly use but must have as it is a backup for my other sites and I would charge you a fraction of what I pay. The best to use is someone like HostGator or Tailor Server.. avoid godaddy at all costs. Good hosting starts at about $150 a month which is expensive, so my recommendation would be to team up with me or another warrior forum, and share resources because like yourself.. most of us need dedicated servers for the speed but they are vastly under utilized.

Difference between shared hosting and VPS
So you already know that in dedicated server, you have one physical box of computer dedicated to you.
Using the right technology, a dedicated server can be "split" into many shared hosting or several VPS.
Shared hosting and VPS have a similarity of shared resource, but in general VPS has more allocated resources (CPU, memory, etc) than shared hosting.
Using VPS also gives you a root account. This is a master account in linux, so that you (or your VA) can configure the server without many restrictions from web provider.

    Your need:
Based on your requirements, you need a membership site and a video hosting

    My advice:
For the membership site, you can do a self hosting. Since you need a fast loading page, I would advise to go for a VPS. At least VPS with 1Gb ram.
You also need a video hosting. This can be done in two ways: self hosting in VPS or hosting in amazon S3.

    Choice of VPS:
There a many choices for VPS, but I would suggest for Digital Ocean. It has an intuitive panel for beginner. It also priced at very competitive rate. For a 1Gb memory droplet (they call VPS as a droplet), the current rate is 10 bucks per month.

You need a Video hosting site or file hosting site With FMPEG Support which will speed up the buffering of videos. My advice you can with TMD Hosting, Arvixe etc.

Its definitely a good idea. But not something I would do. But still, thanks for the offer.

Yea, I do host my videos on amazon, so do I still need a VPS just for my website?
I understand if I want to host videos on my own I need a VPS, but since my videos are on amazon, do I still need it?

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. If you don't know what a VPS is, you certainly dont know what a LAMP stack is and how to modify Apache config files etc.

    Stick with shared hosting.

A VPS means knowing how to use the Linux command line, knowing how to SSH etc.

I am using a shared server now but my page is loading slow at 5 sec at best.

Why don't you use Youtube to host your videos for starters? or are these videos only accessible after you pay for membership?

I personally think that shared hosting is going to be enough for your needs right now with this membership site, and only think about dedicated servers when you start getting 1,000 unique visitors a day. I use BlueHost for hosting and it has never made me any problems.

But I'm not an expert on hosting, so from what I understand it's ok to start out with shared hosting.

      Hope that helps...

I did use youtube for the promo videos.
But it was loading slow, so I was testing to see what was lagging my site.
So part of the test was to change video hosting.

And it seem to be a bit better.
And im sticking to it, anw, it looks more professional than a youtube video.

Yea, I think im gonna just change hosting provider 1st but still under shared hosting.
If its still slow then I guess I have to throw money at this problem and just upgrade to a vps. oh well.

        Agreed.

Until you are getting an ungodly amount of traffic, shared hosting such as BlueHost (have never used them myself, but have heard good things about them) or HawkHost (which I use for hosting and am very satisfied with) should be sufficient for your needs.

There are many ways to test the Page Speed.

One way is to use a free online tool at Website speed test

Insert your URL to test the load time and to analyze it.
Be aware that by default the results will be made public, however, you can set it as private by unchecking the "Save test and make it public" in the options.

      Not accurate.

And its useless in my opinion.

      Tried already anw.

It always show different results. And altho it shows x seconds, when I ask various people to test out in my previous thread I started. Many people come back with different results.

So to me if it doesn't work for real humans it doesn't work, even if pingdom says its loading fast.

      Edited:

      I tested again.
      1st time I load it, 29 seconds.
      2nd time I load it, 6 seconds.

      So much difference.

Then you might need to take a look at https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/

The page speed is determined by many factors, such as the location of the person accessing your website, your webhosting performance, etc

The second-time page-speed might be faster since most of the assets (images, javascripts) have been cached. However, I am not sure for your case.

My advice would be to spend some time optimising the site first. If you are not hosting videos then shared should be fine to get started. It is not worth throwing hardware at a site if it is not optimised. If you don't know how to do it then look for a freelancer on odesk to get the site optimised.

If you are using wordpress then look at getting a caching plugin installed, this can improve performance significantly.

If you are still having problems after this then speak to your hosting provider, they can check resources on the shared server to see if anyone on the server is using up too much of the resources.

Also check where your visitors are coming from, if most visitors are a long way away from your server then look into a content delivery network to serve images etc on servers closer to your visitors.

      This is a concern too.

Even if I fix everything, all it takes is someone who "over use" the server, it will have adverse effect on my campaign because it lags my landing page.

So I will fix the problem but I think I will also want to have a more robust hardware.

          haha I think so too.

Can you explain to me why?

Im thinking supercache is something like when some visits it cache permanently on his server or something?
So even if he clears it, when he re-turn visits, it will still load fast?

But the 1st visit will always be slow still right?
