Have you tried Direct Mail?

My very first business was started 20 years ago, my background is residential construction and I merely struck out on my own. My first contract was one for $45,000 to frame a house for a Broker/Realtor acting as the general contractor for friends of his.

I landed that contract by using direct mail. Funny thing is, all I had at the time though was an old Smith Corona typewriter. I merely banged out a few short sentences explaining who I was, what I could do and that I was available immediately.

Funnier still... I wasn't even smart enough to make copies of the mail piece I created, I kept typing letter after letter. Fortunately, as I mentioned, the letter was short. Then hand address each envelope, including my return address, and place the stamp. I suppose I would prepare six or eight letters each evening for mailing the next day.

This only lasted for about two weeks as by then I had the results I hoped. After that, all my jobs came as result of word of mouth. Amazing.

If you are struggling to gain some traction with your business, give direct mail a try yourself. I don't mean full blown all out big list mailings. Just be you.

Write a short letter. Explain who you are and what you can do. Mail that letter to businesses and individuals you believe would hire you. Start locally and watch what happens.

    It does work.

I use this for a few off my online-offline hybrid businesses. There are ways to spin the method too (as I'm sure some of you will know) to make those mailings even more effective.

If you're approaching local businesses, mailing can yield surprisingly strong results.

I enjoyed your story, Doug. Well written and very interesting!

I remember too the sheer excitement I experienced meeting that first contact face to face. While it is a feeling that still comes today when meeting new people, not quite the same intensity.

One more thing I learned from that overall experience was just how connected the business people in town are, everywhere I now know. And, while they do expect to be sold, business owners look for you to be genuine first, and always.

      Excellent point.

We're definitely talking the same language, Doug. It's amazing the knock-on effect you can have when you do a superb job for a client. Word of mouth. And the great thing: no waiting for affiliate payments!

Thanks for that Doug... I do all of mine through email but might try it and share the results!

You can also put your website on a business card and go around town and introduce yourself. On your website, you can ask for their email and then follow up with them anytime. Cheaper then direct mail.

It's good to know I'm not the only one.

    Old school spam.

In the early 90s I started a tree/yard service in Wausau Wisconsin. I went around the affluent parts of town and wrote down the addresses of the mini-mansions with big yards full of leaves. I then sent them a nice card introducing my service. It worked very well.

Offline direct mail marketing, always works very well for service related businesses and anything to do with home repair or maintenance including house cleaning or yard services as the person most often checking the mail is the one who is making the decision about what needs to be done around the house.

Good message Doug. I had an old boss who was a real peddler. He always said "the more I work the luckier I get". I think you give a good example of that. Do not over complicate things. Get your message out where people can find it and some good results are bound to happen.

I use direct mail campaigns in conjunction w/facebook ads. I'll send out 50-100 at a time, and I'll use custom audiences to target the business owners i just mailed.

Plus, i don't mail my letters to the business, i find out who owns the business, and mail it to their home address. I'll wait around 3 days & setup my FB ads campaign. Basically saying that if i can reach you, I can reach your customers too. I've done this twice in the last 3 months and picked up 6 clients, 5 of them are monthly.
