Copyright law regarding using manufacturer photos and text

Is it legal to use a manufacturers photo and product description to market products online in UK? I suspect that you probably need the manufacturers permission but what if you copy the text from the product box itself?

What if I took a photo of the product box, would that be illegal as I'm sure they have a copyright of the photos on the box too?

Thanks for reading :-)

    This.

    That's no less copyright, surely?

There's no downside to asking for permission, is there?

I'm not a lawyer, and this forum's a terrible place to ask for (or to take) legal advice, but it sounds pretty much a black-and-white issue, to me? If you don't yourself own the copyright to any text or pictures (and they're not "public domain") then someone else does, surely? It seems to me that the mistake to avoid, in these contexts, is always the assumption that people "won't mind because you're helping them to sell their product". Many people have had "accidents", through that belief.

I would ask for their permission.

It is better to be safe then sorry.

This is my thinking also . I just thought I'd ask in case there was some sort of eu law that overuled copywrite law for the purpose of selling goods or something.

      Thanks all!

I did a project once that required the same thing as you and without exception the companies I contacted where happy to let me use what I needed. Some companies, I think Apple is one of them, have a page on their sites describing what you can use and how you can use it so you may not have to ask at all.
