Examples of sports niches?

What about running or biking and the associated gear? These are sports that the average user can actually participate in, as opposed to NBA and NFL readers preferring to get their information from sites like ESPN.

See, I know A LOT about NFL, NBA, college sports... I have lots of friends who are playing and I have resources but covering general news is... idk boring?. People can easily write articles from ESPN and there are lots of news sources.

I am trying to pick a niche that I can stay on top of and actually sell products or make my own product. Idk something unique.

I seen an example and one was selling knee supports. That idea is just so broken down I like it. Just not that topic.

There are lots of niches that deal with LOSING WEIGHT..... what about GAINING WEIGHT? I my self have a problem where I can't gain weight, I don't eat enough or work out.... The keyword "gaining weight" has just over 2million results while losing weight has over 10.5 million.

What he said if you're targeting people who actually play, and primarily teenagers through college age.

Edit: You can also target parents and coaches

Otherwise, blogging about fantasy picks, whether weekly or daily can make you some money - especially as an affiliate for fantasy sites like fanduel and draftkings.

Could actually make you a lot of money once you figure out how to get traffic.

Its year round and there are periods where major sports overlap. Obviously football is the biggest, but people play fantasy baseball, basketball, and hockey too.

If you had a college basketball blog specifically about Duke and North Carolina.... i think you could earn money with this. Then of course you could expand and do the same thing with other top basketball schools. Would take a lot of time because there are alot of good teams and players, but in theory it sounds feasible.

Since you know a lot about NFL and NBA you could create products and guides for amateur players looking to improve their skills.

For example, hire a local good basketball player or coach or something, and create a video guide explaining different ways to improve your game.

There are many options within those 2 sports.

I use to cover just one college team, I wrote blog posts about football and basketball at the school. But it seems like its hard to make money from it from affiliates because its just one team.

If I did something in the lines of, how to improve your game, how would you not run out of info to talk about?

Do you not think their is already guides and too much competition showing how to dribble a basketball?

You just have to think outside the box when it comes to different ways of improving your game. You can break just about any sport into many different guides of improving skill. Drills, workouts, breaking down fundamentals, etc. It may seem hard but if its something you are really interested in, just go for it. You can always add to the site later if you start out with just one sport. You could promote other people's guides and make money that way if you think theres too much competition in that particular area.

I'm not into fantasy sports, myself, but I do know people who are. They are constantly scouring the net looking for scraps of information that will give them an edge. Even if you don't want to do all the reporting yourself, just curating the information that's out there already will get you an audience if you do it right.

You advertise where the fantasy players congregate, whether that's team or league official sites, fan sites, fantasy sites, etc.

You make money by getting them on a list and making referrals to sites where they can play. You can also promote things like team yearbooks, stats guides and compilations, etc.

Unless you have the pocketbook to support something like SBNation.com, stick to one sport. Better to establish yourself in one sport than try to be the next Sports Illustrated.

If I were going to try this, I'd cover college football, maybe even one conference. Lots of buzz about the new playoff this year. Maybe some spillover to the NFL draft and which players might be drafted where.

It does mean that the game picks are over - no games, no thing to bet on, no picks.

Fantasy, on the other hand, goes on year round for the true fanatic. They may not have an actual league (that 'no games' thing again), but the hard core fantasy sports guys (and over 90% are guys) are scouring the rumor boards and team sites looking for inside information on player movement (trades/free agency), the draft, coaching changes, etc.

The offseason, with the exception of the opening of free agency and the draft, is when you can get by with a lighter publishing schedule. You only really need to post when there is news.

What you want to do is work backward from the product space and let that guide your choice of both market and topics.

For example, if you head over to Amazon, you will find some of the top items that come up under NBA are:

- Video games
- Coaching books and training programs
- Clothing (Consumer goods) - * think rabid fans
- Toys

Within each of these you can drill in further (Ex just books) where you can notice other trends.

Work out from the products will give you some solid tips on both the markets (consumers, kids, coaches) and also guidance around the types of posts and topics that will most closely align with those audiences.

I'd pick a sport that's active year round.

There's a lot going on with GPS oriented games. Just do a search to check it out.

Another thing that hot now and will be until the government squashes it is drones. Stick with hobby drones rather than larger ones as the feds are certain to have them in their sites soon.

Another evergreen sports market is fishing.

Paper airplanes is a small niche that no one seems to be dominating yet.

Decide what you want to do and then become an affiliate for those products. If you find you really like one of these sports you can create a blog and build a community around it. That's where you'll really be able to cash in. Build a community and deliver lots of high quality content. In time, when you have a lot of devoted traffic coming to the site, install a forum and encourage your peeps to participate.

Publish a newsletter.

Create videos on the topic.

Write fresh blog posts three times a week.

Create short and to the point PDF special reports.

Become one of the go-to guys on your topic.

I think it's best to do this with something your like or love because otherwise it's hard to do all you'll need to do to make it fly. Good luck.

Saw a cool site recently that had soccer jerseys, autographed photos of players and teams and autographed balls and would probably be able to make some money with that kind of stuff for nba, nfl, etc. Probably just have to be able to reach the right kind of audience

You don't have to get a scoop, to make money. That's the beauty of this. Just add your own interesting commentary, that's your scoop (or "Niche"). Your commentary, thoughts, opinions, humorous spin, rant, excitement, etc, is the secret sauce that makes it unique.

Consider one of these for example,

The Paid Way - you could subscribe to a news wire and get sports news like other small newspapers do. And back it up with your own personal commentary, give it a personal or humorous spin, very popular for today's audience. Check out TMZ Sports for an example.

Free Method - Research the top news stories of the day that catch your eye and is compatible with your target audience. Next, add your own personal commentary (humorous or straight). You can even get a ton of fresh, often unreported, and free news from Sports Press Release sites or even general Press Release sites for FREE!

Moral: There's many personal human interest, even gossip stories available from reliable sources. ESPN, Fox, TMZ sports, yes. But they still can't report them all simultaneously. Not enough time or space. You can fill some of the holes for your audience.

Plus, even if they could (which they don't) your readers haven't necessarily seen them all. And none has seen them with your unique commentary.

That's one way to attack it head on. Just add your 'passion'.

You might focus on sports related subniches such as 'sports medicine' or 'common sports injuries'. If you're just a fan of sports and want to write about that, then you could adapt this idea by profiling players who had specific injuries and detailing their treatments. As for monetizing the blog, you could sell ad space directly to sports medicine doctors.

My thinking on this situation is how a real sports fan is going to want to know about the sport injuries of a player as that will tell them who is in the game and who isn't. Right now, everyone is covering sports scores and statistics. So, you really have to approach the sports niche in a while new way.

Another possible interesting niche could be the diets and nutrition plans used by sports stars. You could monetize the niche by selling sports nutrition related Kindle ebooks and affiliate offers for sports nutrition diet plans.

OP, look at this website: Hundred Pushups

That site is dead simple. It used to be even simpler than it looks now; it's only been broadened out because its owner is monetising the hell out of it. It's popular enough that there have been loads of knock-offs - 50 pushups, 20 pushups, 20 pull-ups, 50 pull-ups, etc.

So I agree with JohnnyPlan - try to dig underneath the fingernails of 'sport' into these little niches that have crossover appeal for athletes. Get very, very tight with the focus. I bet a site focused on, say, just shin splints could do pretty well given some effort.

Digging under the finger nail is the hard part. When I think I come up with a good idea, it ends up not being specific enough. IE, the shin splints I see where you're coming from but that's a niche I wouldn't feel passionate about. General sports I have passion for but again its not narrowed down enough.

Would this be an example of a specific sports niche? " Home workout plans for athletes" ?

To tackle a niche like this, do I have to be involved with the workout plans or just blog about them?

What about Mixed Martial Arts - it´s not so common a sport compared to NHL/NBA but the members are highly engaged.

And you have lots of sub-niches that you could target.

Options to monetize are Gadgets, Info Products, Supplements, Tshirts ...

The two biggest companies in the niche Steiner Sports and Sports Memorabilia.com have some of the biggest commission rates in the niche. Yes, I agree everybody is covering statistics and scores that's why I want to be different but still have passion for the niche. But with the diets/nutrition these athletes have professional trainers I'm sure... So I'm not sure how I could get in depth information on what they use.

When it comes to sports niches I would make sure that you are an Expert in whatever niche you decide to take on. If you come across as trying to "fake it" and people find out that you do not know what you are talking about, they will easily call you out.

With that said, blogging about your favorite college team would definitely be a good niche. You can monetize it by selling jerseys and memorabilia by becoming an affiliate. You can blog about their history, update it with news about the team such as, scouting reports of new high school recruits coming into the program, coaching changes, play by play break down of each game, injury reports, etc. The list goes on and on.

Thanks for the feedback. I have actually ran a blog a few years ago about the Florida gators. I sold lots of advertising space, links etc and found success. But I was hoping to switch it up and go a different direction.

Even if there are several blogs about my favorite sports team, will there always be money to be made?

What would earn more money/bring in more traffic.... Covering one college sports team, or covering the entire college basketball sport?

There are more than you can imagine. You need to think outside the box about this.

Take for example Golf. Golf is a sport that hits almost all the demographics there are. Golf is also a sport where a large number of the spectators are also participants. Meaning they play. So aside from promoting equipment, there are many clickbank products available.

Also, in the golf niche, many of the male golfers smoke cigars, so there is another angle.

This is where research comes in.

Try blogging from a different angle. Like instead of talking about the latest news talk about some of the plays they ran and what made them effective. I only say that because I, and many others I know, read that type of stuff and buy information about it as we are youth sports coaches and we are always looking for new plays to teach our teams. I know people who are obsessed with buying coaching material.

There are alot of good ideas in these replies. I have a quick suggestion for you.

Most any athlete, but especially football players, have to stay in shape during the off season. Many have to recuperate from a torn acl or other similar injuries and have to look forward to the next season when they have been knocked out of a current season.

Why not create a blog covering sports science/sports medicine and the workouts and mindset needed to handle an injury, push past it, and be ready to play again as soon as possible.

You might even contact players from time to time and as for an email interview, or in person if possible, to ask them what they are doing to recover from an injury. Or what they had to do after they recovered to help prevent the injury again.

You could cover particular players and how they are playing after recovery, and make recommendations to guys who get the same injury.

You can branch off in several different directions and probably find a very specific niche

If you are a football fan, you have plenty of options, and you actually give yourself options for all sports I would think. Injuries, workouts, and what motivates different athletes ought to give you plenty to blog about.

Most any athlete, but especially football players, have to stay in shape during the off season. Many have to recuperate from a torn acl or other similar injuries and have to look forward to the next season when they have been knocked out of a current season.

Why not create a blog covering sports science/sports medicine and the workouts and mindset needed to handle an injury, push past it, and be ready to play again as soon as possible.

You might even contact players from time to time and as for an email interview, or in person if possible, to ask them what they are doing to recover from an injury. Or what they had to do after they recovered to help prevent the injury again.

You could cover particular players and how they are playing after recovery, and make recommendations to guys who get the same injury.

If you are a football fan, you have plenty of options, and you actually give yourself options for all sports I would think. Injuries, workouts, and what motivates different athletes ought to give you plenty to blog about.

Not a bad idea. So would the blog be better if it covered every sport? How can money be made from this?

What do you mean by branching off into a specific niche, would that not already be a niche covering injuries?

I have many connections and leads so I could get some interviews of players who have been injured.

It's probably too late to start now unless you can ramp up quickly, but the Super Bowl has always been a lucrative arena for promoting sports equipment, diets, workout videos, memorabilia, party supplies, etc.

However, the Olympics is not too far away to plan now for what is expected to be record-breaking expenditures by advertisers. Content that is inspirational and heartfelt, playing up the human spirit of hope, dreams and achievement, is more likely to be remembered and carried over for months (or years) after the event.

A general rule of thumb that I have found to be quite effective is to follow the money trail left by the big boys. They have already done much of the heavy lifting in market research. There is a tremendous marketing advantage by tying your marketing campaigns into widely publicized events.

Check and see if DraftKings.com or FanDuel.com (fantasy sports sites) have affiliate programs. If you start a blog about sports, you can probably make some decent money from those.
