Is the Recession affecting your online earning efforts?

How has the recession affected your online earnings? Or has it? I know while the recession has hit many industries hard (including those online), it has also helped some others. It seems like there could be a potential influx of people after the new year looking for ways to make extra money.

I think it has helped the people that sell products that teach people how to make money online (since a lot of people are losing their jobs and are looking to start their own businesses). I'd say it all depends on the niche, but most niches are probably down(especially entertainment).

      Hi,

I don't think that the Internet marketing industry is affected by recessions.

Yes, the recession (a.k.a. depression 2.0) is affecting my online earnings efforts. I used to be a corporate type, then worked for a small company.... and now that I have been laid off for awhile, working towards making money online is pretty much all I do

If I were working for someone else, I wouldn't have all this time on my hands to work for number 1 - me.

      • Well, I certainly hope the recession doesn't affect the Internet as much as it is affecting the "real" world!

I have started online marketing thinking that it is a beacon of light in a dark economy.

For me, it is the only way out of the "real" world as described by the news.

The truth is, recession helped boost my online earnings.

A lot of people got laid off (and still more in the coming months) from their jobs. That's the problem with being just an employee - there's no job security. That's why most of them resorted to start their own online business or just work at home - most of them realized that is it a practical choice.

Internet marketing will never be affected by recession simply because not everwhere in the world is affected by a recession right... and seen we have access to the world it comes to pin pointing your efforts

Most people I know with internet businesses are doing better than businesses offline.
There's so much more overhead offline that it seems it would be easier to weather a bad economy with an online business.

I thought it might be interesting to get some more current feedback as the recession is supposedly "easing." Anyone still finding challenges in a recessionary market? Or perhaps the recessionary climate is actually helping drive traffic to your sites, blogs, opportunities, etc.

My earnings have been increasing and most of the other online marketers who I know have had similar results. However, many of the ebay sellers that I know have seen significantly fewer buyers in their stores.

Hope that helps. Have a great day!

The recession has been detrimental to online earnings. There is no doubt about it. Aside from people having less money, one other key factor IMO is the cancellation of credit cards. Banks have been revoking them for some time even when the user isn't missing payments. Internet commerce lives and dies by the credit card.

Anyone claiming that they are way up is probably just in a state of early growth where it is unlikely that they would be going anywhere but up regardless of the economy. It's like someone saying they went from $125,000 a year to $90,000 and then someone else chiming in that they doubled their earnings from $500 to $1,000.

It's not making an across the board difference for me, but one of my niches is getting trounced and I'm not sure if it's just the time of year or if it's going to stay down for awhile. Seasonal so it's hard to tell yet.

I agree with most here. The recession, if anything, has helped business.

I have actually done incredibly well in the last two years, by more than doubling my bottom line.

Well, for a while I thought it was affecting me on eBay, then I realized it was eBay that was doing damage, not the recession.

As far as my digital products, I've been alright. I won't know the difference for a couple years as I started recently. For all I know my income will double when we pull out of the recession since I sell niche products and not MMO products.

One of my niches is real estate related, so, as you might expect, it's taken a pretty big hit in the past 2 years. My primary affiliate program in that niche cut their average payout from $55 in late 2007 to just $4 now, and others are down to a large extent as well. Last month I made 27 sales for them, you do the math...

The market for my software tools has really tanked since late '08.

It's OK though coz the government can keep printing money to keep everyone spending at the stores.

I have found that the recession only affects the mind. If you feel the recession is bad then it will affect your online efforts.

I know, I was in this trap when it started in 2008. My mind was telling me the world is coming to and end and then my online efforts really took a hit.

From my experience I believe the recession has actually been good for the outsourcing business.

Instead of paying a salary, many companies are realising that it is far more cost effective to outsource any work as and when it is needed.

Just take a look at Elance. The writing and translation jobs required on there are now over 1500. A couple of years ago it was rarely higher than 1000

Yes it does have some effect on online money.

However people who guide others how to make online money may have some business opportunity as lots of individuals are looking for alternative stream of income.

Question is - will they be able to make online money now that the world is in financial instability again as demonstrated in last week's heavy drop in the world stock markets.

I certainly pray that the world economy will be resilient from now on....

  • More and more are unemployed ended up looking for online job.

    Online Businesses flourishes and

take advantage of the recession by analyzing where expenses can be cut

and the many ways money can be saved in both big and small ways. This

is the time for employers to make their businesses more efficient and yet

stay customer-friendly to keep their clients happy and serviced properly.

The business owners should also review their financing and make sure

they are getting the best interest rates that are possible in order to keep

    their companies afloat.

Online earning is not affected by recession for those who knows how to

    shape in.

That's a good point André Silverspoon, and finding something legitimate that also helps others make money can really pay off.

Everytime it seems things are getting better, something else comes up that seems to keep the economy dragging.

so far it hasn't really affected us since almost all our sites are either freemium or sell moderately-priced products which most people can still easily afford. however, one thing that has hurt us quite substantially is the weak USD. we are in Switzerland, and because of the current uncertainty about US debt - check out this impressive graphic illustration - the Swiss franc is at a historical high right now, at almost 1.3 USD. since our expenses are in Swiss francs, and the income is mostly in USD, this has been very noticeable

eh well - need more sites

Same here in Canada - at one point I was getting 1.6 CN$ for every US$... now it's less than 1. That's a big change, and swallows up a lot of the increase in US$ income that I've experienced.

Recessions are great for some, not so good for others.

I use my Online skills to market to Offline business owners. When times were good 2003-2007 it wasn't easy to get their attention. Many were making money hand over fist.

Forward ahead to 2011 and they're all ears.

Now I pinpoint who "I' want to work with, not everyone can have my services.

Unless you're selling houses or mortgages you should be doing very well marketing online.

Nope I am actually earning more from the recession than i was before.

You might ask, sure sure celente you are full of sheeeet!

But I will tell you that I have a double degree in economics and I know what is coming for the us. So in 2007 and before the stockmarket crashed, I put myself in teh niches I thought would do well .... and they are doing better than I have ever hoped for.

I am also in ever green niches like relationship and healthy niches too.

If you really are a good marketer and I mean, not just a newbie, you know your stuff, you should realise where the supply and demand is. Then use it to your advantage, and make money in any economic climate.

Now...stop whining and get out there and make some money.
