just like mine did today and has been for about 5 hours.

i can't get anyone's attention because i have no contact information.

is this normal?

how do you guys handle it and when do you decide it's too much.

also, what would you do if they didn't come back?

please tell me i've got no reason to panic/be pissed.

thanks

Be pissed but it will do no good.

If you cannot contact anyone there I would move my hosting to another provider. I use 1and1 and can get someone on the phone 24/7.

Hosting goes down from time to time but 5 hours...

    Hi,

    Been there.

Did you clear your cache? I spend the day getting the site down message one time and in fact it had been up all day. I just kept getting the cached site down page.

I hope you have backups. If not and if your site is not too involved try the wayback machine or google cashed pages to retrieve your layouts and text.

Also when a site is back up sometimes it takes tome for it to propagate so ask here if we can see it.

Yeah, I would move to a more well-known host. I use GoDaddy for everything and their customer support is always more than great.

You say hosting goes down "from time to time"... It shouldn't really go down much at all. That is bad enough, but if you can't contact them, move straight away... it costs you too much money to stuff around with.

Here is what you can do:
    1. Get two similar hosting accounts (but with different companies, at different data centers) - make one an exact mirror of the other with file and db syncs every x minutes.
    2. Sign up with a dedicated DNS provider for your site, instead of using the DNS address your host provides.
    3. Use your dedicated DNS at your registrar. Whenever your site goes down, you can change the IP at the dedicated DNS and have your domain name point to the backup copy with little lag in the files or db, and no propigation times, since your dedicated DNS is what your domain name resolves to, and the connection from your domain name to your hosting is just a line that can be changed in seconds on the DNS machine.

this is a very good idea and to the person who called it a wake up call....it is. i've got to do something to protect myself better. i'm still doing a lot of learning and that is one of the things that i've just learned that i need to do. i'll have to learn how to do all of that up there.

just to catch people up...the hosting service was actually fine. apparently i had a bad cookie or something that the servers didn't like and it ended up banning my IP. i have a static one so there's not really anything i can do.

it got fixed but we couldn't get it figured out what exactly it was that caused it. then it happened again after i tried installing a certain wordpress theme on a blog i had just put up. does that make sense that a theme would have something in it that would cause me to get my IP banned?

Find another more reliable host with at least 99% uptime if your current host always go down.

Panic, contact my host support team and panic some more.

Never heard of a good host going down for that long.

After about two hours I would set up the site on another host and change the DNS so you're back online.

Your host going down shouldn't be a big deal, just upload your backup to another host and get on with your day.

If it's not that easy, you haven't planned well enough, so take this as a wake-up call and develop a plan to deal with it better next time.

I've never, ever heard of a host having something set up to automatically create IP bans based on HTTP requests (website usage). If they're doing it to you, how do you know they're not randomly banning people visiting your site too? I'd ask them for more info about how that all works, and consider leaving just for that.

Yeah, I'm not sure how it all works and I don't know if they have it figured out or understood what happened. Crap, I'm not even sure I would understand if they explained it all to me. That's why I pay people to take care of things. I don't want to be bothered with that stuff. I guess to an extent I really need to get educated regarding a lot of this just to keep me from being bothered more in the future.

I do think that I may have to get a mirror hosting account just in case but I'm going to give these guys the benefit of the doubt for right now. Hopefully it won't happen again. Like I said, I do know I need to have a much better back up plan.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Let this be a warning to all you newbs or vets who forget/get complacent....back up everything and get an emergency plan for if something does happen to your hosting service.

if your hosting were down for so much time, change the hosting is the best choice. it will save you time and $. no matter how they explain it, the hosting will be down again. you will lose more if you do not change,

    good luck

    Are you serious?

If you don't have who to contact while they fall down you're in a deep hole man. Leave that hosting company today and find a better one. There are thousands of companies out there looking for new customers all the time.

5 hours is really the time to panic. You lose all your traffic and hence the earnings. I feel its time to switch your hosting. I have been using MT, the service is good with uptime, but if you ask the support team, it sucks with late responses.

    It better not be ;-)

You might want to go with a real hosting company who actually owns the data center and servers. Get a managed dedicated server.

Sure you pay a bit more... but when things go wrong, and they will, you have someone to call.

I guess that is why I pay more for our hosting each month than most American's pay for their mortgage.

But even if you need to use a budget company you can still get a better host with 24/7 customer service that owns their own data center.
