Here is an Email I sent to a Online Guru who was Acting very Unethical and Breaking the Law !!

Could not help myself from writing this as I felt compelled to vent . Recently , I wrote a 'reply' email out of frustration to a very, very well known Marketer (who to me is a slime ball quite frankly)

Being around awhile, it is pretty amazing ( but also in a way not shocking) to see some very highly successful Online Marketers just acting like criminals.

I have been on this guy's List for awhile and just could NOT for the Life of me get off it no matter how hard I tried.

Here is a pasted copy of that email

" This is a Warning to you **** **** ,

I have Unsubscribed to you at least 6 times in the past. With NO compliance on your part.

I Unsubscribed to you yesterday but I am still getting your Email today.

I Unsubscribed again today.

I will issue a formal Complaint against you the next time you send me an Unsolicited Email.

I will not tolerate your Spam.

Yes, after Unsubscribing to you at least 6 times in the past, you are now Spamming me.

You have been warned "

I think I was fair.
So far I have not heard or seen one email come from him !

We will see if that works or not

Yes, well if he is smart he will have a Customer Service Help desk that does.

That is if he wants to continue being a Guru

Yep.. I think I know who you are talking about... This must be the dude that operates a free autoresponder service??? If not then you can add this one to your watchlist lol... No matter how hard you try to opt out its impossible.... Annoying as hell... There is quite alot of complaints online regarding this person... I will of course avoid any more details as I think that would be inappropriate to ga*&#!?... I would simply blacklist/block that email address.... But I like your way better... Lets see what happens...

I've sent similar emails, in the past, to one or two "household name" marketers, including one who's mentioned in this forum on at least a daily basis, and another who owns an autoresponder service himself.

Forgive me for stating the blindingly obvious, here, but whether they work depends (perhaps among other things) on whether they're actually read.

I eventually managed to get off the biggest "household name marketer's" list (to which I had never subscribed at all!) only when I started sending daily complaint emails to his help-desk, with visible copies to the appropriate complaint email addresses of his domain-registrar, hosting company, Google and the FTC.

I suspect that "who you copy the emails to" matters more, in such cases, than how strong your language is. Just a theory.

Some of these "gurus" are, of course, exactly the same idiots whose teaching-methods (so eagerly lapped up by so many) are responsible for so many people's single-figure open-rates, and for the widespread belief that "that's normal, in this industry": Sick of Emails Not Being Opened?

    Good luck with it!!

It's a good reminder that all email marketers need to have a SUPPRESSION LIST.

Especially if you have multiple autoresponders, it can be very tricky to keep track of who has unsubscribed. (And if an end user is on multiple lists, and they unsubscribe from one, the lists may not be interlinked enough to communicate with one another).

Hence why suppression lists are a must for well respected warriors and email marketers.

(A suppression list is basically a "Universal" list of people who have unsubscribed. Great to have).

If these guys don't have an UNSUBSCRIBE link that works, that is a problem that they are probably not aware of.

Seems to me like he doesn't have that feature and he probably does not even care.

Yeah, I can tell you it was Aweber Unsubscribe link (EDIT it was not Aweber after double checking)

Oh.... Aweber.. Very surprising... You would expect that to work period with no work around to stop that as that is a reputable company... Surely Aweber can also help from their end? Then for sure we talking about a different person lol....

Sorry, I went back and checked. I was getting it confused with another person's email.

In fact it was not an Aweber account. My bad. It looks self hosted.

Bound to be ... these people don't use services like Aweber, who certainly won't let them get away with that, or anything like it!

I recently had a similar issue. I subscribed to ONE list and the next day I started getting emails from TONS of marketers that I KNOW I never subscribed to! I have been hitting the unsubscribe link and have been able to get rid of 4 or 5 a day, but they just keep on coming. And these are all from different people (or so they seem to be).

I don't know exactly what list I subscribed to but it had to be one of the ones I subscribed to last Wednesday, because on Thursday is when I started to get emails from people I didn't know and had never heard of. I remember subscribing to 3 different lists last Wednesday, so I know it's one of them, but just which one I'm not sure how to find out.

I remember hearing of an email marketing "coach" who was building lists for clients so they could start selling solo ads (to the tune of $3,000 per client). As it turns out, all this person was doing was co-regging his subscribers to ALL of his client's lists, so basically whenever he got a subscriber, every single person he charged $3,000 got the SAME subscriber.

I'm betting this is the same type of deal. Shameful...

I'm cautious about who I give my email too but I must admit... I get spammy emails all the time from people I didn't sign up for.

At first I thought they were just solo ads but they are not because they would be coming from someone I recognize.

Very Frustrating. I wish I knew exactly who you were referring too though.

    Thanks!

It honestly doesn't matter which one he's referring to: there are several, all broadly similar. Nothing "unique" has been mentioned in this thread. They're just "gurus" who talk out their assets.

People need to learn, gradually, through experience, whether they want to get their advice about "How to do internet marketing successfully" from people who are basically selling information on "How to do internet marketing successfully" and making their own livings that way, or from people who are just "doing internet marketing successfully" without themselves selling IM/MMO-related products/services. I don't for a moment suggest that all the "gurus" are bad, or that all of them misinform people, or that all of them are either scammers or spammers, but that's still a decision (and rather a fundamental one!) we each have to make, for ourselves.

It's easier to sell information on how to build lists and make money online than it is to actually implement the information a lot of these "gurus" are selling. That's part of the reason why we have a constant stream of disappointed new members here who have bought a bunch of information products and still aren't able to build a list.

I can't help but wonder how many of these "gurus" would actually make it in IM if they were forced to quit selling IM products and coaching and actually go out and do the things they're telling others to do...

Can't be done, here, according to the forum's rules. (And rightly - otherwise the facility would be abused, every time someone had a grudge/grievance, and there'd only be one side of the story, too - or there'd be blazing arguments, which might be even worse. So it's better to be able to raise and discuss these things here without any of that risk ).

Yes so true. Its tempting but when we start naming names this place would be like the Wild, Wild West
I have got several PMs in the last hour or so of people saying they wanted the inside scoop of the perpetrator and his name.

But it is not going to happen

The FTC allows you to report spam, when you cannot opt-out, emails with porn, spam with missing or misleading subject lines, or a misleading "from" address. In an extreme case like you are experiencing I would sure report them.

The FTC gives you 2 options to report:

    1) You can forward unwanted email(s) to the FTC at spam@uce.gov.

    Or

    2) Use the FTC Complaint Wizard online form.
