People In Uk Beware Mobile Phone Directory Contains Your Number.

Hey Uk Warriors,

Just heard this news from another forum. If you are sensitive about your mobile contact details being accessible you will want to get yourself off this list.

"Maybe you have heard about this, but early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers. It is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex -directory. We have all unsubscribed and you may want to suggest it to all your friends and family who have UK mobiles or they could be swamped by unsolicited messages and calls. Removal is recommended by the BBC - see link below.

The Directory of Mobile Phone numbers goes live next week. All numbers including those belonging to children will be open to cold calling and the general abuse that less scrupulous telesales people subject us too.

To remove your number go here. (You need your mobile phone with you to do this, they text you a code)

The only directory with millions of mobile numbers - 118800

select the ex-directory hyperlink at the upper right corner of the page and follow the instructions, or you could click on the link below:

The only directory with millions of mobile numbers - 118800

When on the site, click "Home" then "Ex-directory" this will remove you"

    Thanks for the heads-up.
I heard an item about it on the radio a couple of weeks ago but I hadn't realised the launch was imminent.

I got an email about this yesterday,
and I assumed it was a phishing scam.

    I guess not?

What I want to know is what gives
these 118 800 guys the right to have
    everybody's numbers?

    Irritating.

As I understand it David it's like a landline phone in that under current regs they opt you in automatically.

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for reminding me about this, I certainly wasn't aware that it was due to come into effect so soon.

The link in your OP is broken so I hope you don't mind me adding another one to the BBC in case people what to read the full story:

Well, you can thank the war for terror for this little item.

Because it has been suggested that unregistered (pay as you go) mobile phones are used by terrorists to plan their attacks, all mobile phones in Europe must be on a register - it stands to reason that somebody would find a way to publish it.

    Arghh!!!

Read their FAQ - it clearly states they don't have everyone's numbers. I wish people would stop mis-reporting this!

Try searching their system first to see if you're on there. If you are, then certainly unsubscribe. Otherwise, I'm not sure if there's any mileage in unsubscribing?

I just looked for about 10 family and friends numbers and it didn't come up with a single one.

      Tim,
As I understand it they'll continually be adding mobiles numbers to their directory each month.

    Sorted!

Thanks for the warning. It's bad enough getting cold calls on my landline, I really don't want people trying to sell me double glazing when I'm stuck on a train.

I agree with Artwebster, as soon as anything is on a database, sooner or later someone is going to look for a way to make money from it. Heaven help us if our NHS records get entrusted to Google .

Thanks, looks like they are in beta so it wouldn't surprise me if they add more numbers in the future. I often don't even answer my landline now due to the automated sales calls.

      Kevin,
I got my landline ex-directory and on the telephone preference service. That has pretty much cut all cold calls out.

    Hi Phil
Thanks! I saw a discussion about this on the beeb. Seems there's some strong views for and against having a mobile phone directory. I fear spam so shall be removing myself. I have a routebale number that I use to give businesses to contact on my mobile. Other than that my mobile is only for family and friends.

It is important to remember that if you fail to register your mobile the chances are that it will be disabled. It seems that the omus has been placed upon service providersd to ensure compliance.

This is most unusual for Spain because we are famous for ignoring laws that don't make sense especially in a country where pay as you go phones are treated as consumables.
