Hosting Companies "Unlimited Traffic and Space" Scam ??

Hello Warriors,

I've been looking for a good host to switch to..

Almost all the hosting companies offer Unlimited Traffic and Unlimited Web Space for about 8 dollar per month.

I heard some good things about SiteGround's hosting so i checked them out. They offer 25K monthly visitors and 20GB Disc Space for 8 dollars. Upon asking them via live chat, they claimed that they're transparent while other companies are false advertising.

Also, the traffic limit.. According to them, if you have 10 sites hosted (unlimited domain can be hosted) getting 5K traffic per month each, you'd have to shift to a better plan since it's 50k visitors per month. Twice of the limited of the 8 dollar package.

My question is.. is Siteground being transparent? Or are they just not on par with the hosting companies offering unlimited of the both? Please share your experience with hosting comapnies plans and traffic/space limits if there are any

Any webhost that tells you that they offer truly unlimited traffic and truly unlimited web space for $8 is a liar.

They will find a reason to shut you down, move you to a different plan, or something if you get too big. Or everything will be so slow to the point that your visitors can't do anything. Or something will break. Or you can't use certain tools or software. Or...

Think about this: if Amazon could run its website for $8 why in the world wouldn't they do just that? I promise you they are paying more than $8 a month.

All hosting providers with "unlimited" shared hosting accounts do in fact have various limitations in place. Quite often you have to dig deep into the terms and conditions to find them, or find out the hard way when your site is suspended for exceeding the "unlimited" conditions.

The follow-up question should be: just how much space and bandwidth do you currently need?

I don't know you or your business but I would hazard a guess that it's nowhere near unlimited and nowhere near exceeding a standard plan that has limits. Most people on this forum just aren't in that position that they even need to think about much more than just standard hosting.

So while a good decision needs to be made, spending a whole lot of time on this is probably a waste of time for most people until a real need is there. When the real need is there, the money is there so as to not have to worry about $8 versus $16 a month, for example.

There are no such thing as unlimited space & bandwidth. If there are, it would be very expensive. Treat hosting as your CPU hard disk. Share hosting mean you share with others in single CPU server. The capacity is totally depend on the harddisk of the CPU. Therefore don't trust when the hosting say they will provide unlimited space because it just marketing to attract people. I would say average usage of shared hosting would be less than 10GB.. then usually my calculation for the bandwidth would be maximum 10 times of space...that is 100GB.. Therefore don't purchase big space of hosting unless your using it a lot because it waste of money. For blogger, 5GB is enough. PM me if you want my hosting recommendation.

Its pretty ironic isn't it.. We aim to be Internet Marketers but at the same time, we have to beware of other internet marketers too.

I recall being warned by Hostgator a few years back when I was trying out a traffic method - they said you need your own server for that level of traffic - so yes there is a limit to all accounts, but it may take a while to reach them.

I've tried many shared hosting companies and am currently using Siteground, and am very happy with them. My site is always up for me, and of the couple of small problems I had they were very quick to respond and get the issue resolved.

Pricing is also a big factor, if they are way too low in cost, than they may be too good to be true. But seriously, most of those here or even I do not need unlimited hosting and I have over a dozen websites that I run. Stick with a simple, but popular hosting provider that has already proved to do a lot of good like host gator, and then focus more on getting traffic and sales to your site until you realize that you are getting more traffic than you thought and then maybe you should consider to get more hosting,

Basically, the answer is YES, Siteground is the only Hosting company that comes clean with their plans.

We use Siteground ourselves and are very happy with it--but we have had to switch to the next level account a couple of times, and we are maxing-out on their shared hosting plans (meaning, getting close to the Dedicated Hosting plan). Also, as we grew we kept getting moved from one server to another several times; I guess we were putting too much load on our machine and affecting other users of the shared server.

I know of other Hosting companies that will sell you their "unlimited" plan and then force you to upgrade the minute your traffic exceeds whatever levels they consider "excessive" (or else kick you out altogether without notice).

We also use Bluehost, but their service level has come down big time since they were bought, so we will probably leave them soon.

Please. This is not the truth. Siteground is NOT the only hosting company that comes "clean" with their plans.

Agreed. We are also a host that offers Unlimited Hosting, but we freely spell out the limitations based on inodes and concurrent connections in our terms and conditions.

My own feeling is that almost every hosting company in the US is violating FCC rules in their advertising and that we would all gain if they were forced to advertise in a more transparent fashion, so I urge everyone who finds themselves forced to upgrade from a limited plan to consider filing a complaint.

It that was the case, why would anybody need a dedicated server anymore?

Sometimes the logic of how a product is advertised doesn't make sense.

But for Siteground it seems reasonable though, i heard a lot of good things about them, and at least they say there's a limit you can't cross.

I know for a fact the above statement is FAR from accurate. I'm in the process right now of moving from one host to another and did a LOT of shopping before making my move.

The host I came from offered unlimited storage and bandwidth and I stayed with them for more than seven years and never had a problem. In fact, they were excellent. I was wholesaling PLR/MMR stuff here and had a massive number of GBs of data on their servers. Only once did they question what I was doing and they were cool with it.

The problem cane when they got so big they decided to outsource their tech support to third world countries and that was a mistake. After waiting days (which had become a pattern even for small issues) for some simple help from them I decided to move on.

I would be careful because you can occasionally find a diamond in the rough that will actually honor their "unlimited everything" claims but that's rare.

    Unlimited "storage" = No.

Unlimited bandwidth...eh, grey area. Unmetered doesn't mean the same thing as "unlimited"

These days, bandwidth is hardly an issue like it used to be. People need to be more worried about the resource usage in terms of memory & CPU utilization over bandwidth.

Unlimited traffic doesn't mean unlimited resources. One view on a WordPress site with ten thousand plugins is going to consume more resources than a plain text index.html.

Knowing how your host handles resource limits is key. Some will suspend your site immediately upon crossing a certain threshold. Others will contact you first and tell you that something needs to be done.

They will shut you down once you hit a little bit higher traffic or they will make you to signup for higher package. They will say "you have used higher resources of server" bla bla..

Been there many times, when my traffic gets high like (200 visitors per hour) they will send me a warning mail. Now i have went for higher package and everything is smooth. So no unlimited hosting for 10 bucks, its just the hosting companies market that way.
