Point 3 is crucial. I use Google Analytics to scrutinise my audience and try and understand how they interact with my sites. It also builds a profile of the type of visitor and I can target their needs in a more responsive way.

Here's an excerpt from a recent blog I wrote that I thought might help answer your question:

Today's suite of inbound marketing tactics focus on meaningful consumer engagement. Successful marketers are solving problems, informing, educating and entertaining audiences. The more creative and innovative you are in your approach, the more followers you'll have.

Consumers don't want to be talked at, they want to be talked to; they want to get to know your company and what you can offer them.

Step into your potential consumer's shoes and answer the following questions: "What value can your company deliver to me?" "How can your products help make my life easier?" "Don't just sell me your product -- show me how I can best utilize it." The more in tune you are to your customer's wants and needs, the more chances you have at getting repeat business.

This single question can change how you see the world of marketing.

There are people who don't understand their clients and their needs, and they don't even try. Learn about your market. Find what they want and need. Discover their problems and provide solutions to those problems.

Inbound marketing - a reflection looking back in time, maybe the birthplace of inbound marketing. I remember when I was growing up on a farm. That was during a period of time when most people in the area lived out in the country, on a farm, and only a few people lived in town.

In order to generate some excitement, with the possibility of selling some merchandise, the businesses in the small town would co-opt a special event. The event might be a Saturday night social dance, a Sunday bar-b-que, a special parade or what ever they thought would draw crowds of people into town. The businesses would all chip in for the expenses of the event such as bulletins, mailings, advertising, etc. They knew that they each would benefit because of the amount of farmers it would draw into town on that one certain day. So, they all prepared their stores to draw in the customers as they passed by during the special event.

In my opinion that might have been the very early version of a form of inbound marketing (businesses with different agendas, merchandise, and services working together for the benefit of all involved). Has anyone else witnessed or been a part of one of these events?
