What does the term 'Internet Marketing' mean to you?

How would you define it, if asked?

The reason I ask the question is because the term has been kind of pulled apart, modified, diluted, put back together and that process seems to repeat itself so often it almost seems continuous. It's happened in this community as well as many others and although it may seem like simple semantics to some for others it could have a totally different effect.

The idea with this thread is that it will help any new person that has entered the big bad world of business and marketing online and stumbles across this thread.

For me the answer is that its pretty much the same as most definitions you will find online. That is to say that it is a form of marketing that uses the internet, email and similar digital forms to drive sales and business.

Internet marketing IMHO is not solely marketing information, tools or coaching programs to other similar people within the industry so that they can ensue the same and with the ultimate goal of driving direct sales.

    Ahhh.. you're complicating things.

Internet marketing LITERALLY just means marketing on the internet.

    Nothing more. Nothing less.

I fourth that.......... If that's even a legit phrase, lol.

Seriously, I share the same opinion these individuals have.

It's my belief that many over complicate things and thus, lost the true definition of marketing. Shortly thereafter (or even simultaneously) focus is lost as a result.

      At its core, marketing IS.....

      1. Identify a group of people
      2. Seek to discover their wants, needs or problems
      3. Create the solution to ONE of those wants, needs or problems
      4. Use media (Internet in this case) to put your solution in front of them.
      5. Make SALES

That's marketing. Always has been; always WILL be..... no matter WHERE it commences be it the Internet or elsewhere.

If there IS a difference (I believe there IS)..... here it is:

You need to learn how to use the medium of choice (again, Internet in this case) is such a way that you effectively accomplish the steps above.

That's where "learning curves" tend to happen but the actual principals of MARKETING..... they're much the same a cross many a media.

        Totally agreed...

The marketing model we all chose may be a little different, but in the end...the internet is simply just another place of conducting the business of exchanging products or services (hopefully high value ones) for dollars...

It means there is low entry barrier for me to enter any business I choose whatever level that may be. The only limit is my skill and creativity. I don't need to impress anyone or get anyone's permission, I can access any market directly.

It's not a bad question to ask really, because most new people tend to overcomplicate things.

But then again, it's not as if you shouldn't know that you have to market products to make money.

For me it's a general term for everything related to marketing on the Internet.

Information marketing is more accurate to describe what most of us do here - that is selling information products (like ebooks & courses).

'Marketing' doesn't necessarily mean selling. Raising awareness is just as legitimate an end result.

Often raised awareness does result in sales, but a lot of people who are not directly selling anything still market their name or brand to increase what marketers call 'share of mind'.

It means marketing on the web?

MMO - affiliate marketing - SEO are all aspects of internet marketing. Think of internet marketing as the main category while everything else is a sub category.

Marketing efforts done solely over the Internet. This type of marketing uses various online advertisements to drive traffic to an advertiser's website. Banner advertisements, pay per click (PPC), and targeted email lists are often methods used in Internet marketing to bring the most value to the advertiser. Internet marketing is a growing business mainly because more and more people use the internet every day. Popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo have been able to capitalize on this new wave of advertising.

Seriously though, it can be similar to that or even done in less time by some.

      Much less.

But some time and somehow you MUST put the work in

Good Question. To keep it short and simple O would define it like this: Marketing a product or service online, with the purpose of selling the product/service.

There are many different ways of doing this, you would just have to find a way that works for you
