Can't access Wordpress admin - any ideas?? FIXED

An odd thing seems to be happening to one of my Wordpress sites. When I type in www.mysite.com/wp-admin, instead of taking me to my log-in box it is taking me to my site and returning a not found error.

This is the site here. Could someone else take a look for me and see if they get the same error?

I've looked at the site with my ftp software and can't see any changes. The site is displaying ok.

Any ideas what's gone wrong??

Thanks
Carol

Rosetrees did you change any of your folder/directories? I mean did you move some things on your server? Also is the address actually mysite dot com or is the mysite a standin for your page name. I'm sure its not but I thought I would ask

Checked your website right now. Something must be wrong with your admin directory on the server. Maybe permission has changed or something. The best option is to contact your hosting support and ask them.

By the way, have you installed this blog from cpanel or regular installation?

I had this same problem about 2 months ago with a WP site that was about to be sold. I spent a half a day trying to figure out what may have happened, and when I finally did gain access again, all of my pages, plugins, content and images had gone! The only thing that was left was the basic WP install, and accompanying plugins.

      What had happened??

Someone had gained access to my admin area, and reinstalled WP, thus rendering everything I had done, a waste of time. All files had been deleted, the database had been changed, and I was bacj at square 1.

I have now learned my lesson. (1) Backup the site every day, and (2) Protect against this happening again (2 easy steps and its blocked)

Good luck with this, I truly hope it is not the same situation for you.

Edit: Well I just checked it out and it seems your site content is still intact on the front end, but I do get the back end 404 when I try to access the admin section. Maybe the 2 articles posted above will help you.

@masterofnone - the real site address is given in the link in the post! Thanks for the links - off to check them now.

@mike - I'm don't remember making any changes. Yes - I might have to contact my host.

@ bryce - I hope it's not that - I do have a db backup - so not problem if I have to reinstall - just a pain timewise

Thanks for everyone's help. I fixed it by upgrading via fantastico. Didn't realise it was still using WP 2.6x

          Hey Rosetrees.

All of the new Wordpress systems are automatically upgradeable now.

From 2.7 onwards ... dashboard lets you know when to upgrade.
