In what things should you invest to success with a website?

Hello,

Hope this is not already answered in ine thread, but I was not able to find anything.

I've read many times that if you start with a new IM project website based or email based, you need a minimum money investment. Saw many ranges of minimum money, that vary between 100 and 500$ (I don't have an income, but I will probably get this kind of money next month due to a grant and I want to invest it wisely on my project), so I'll ask this: How should I better invest my initial capital?

Some examples:

- Domain name 10$
- Hosting (at least) 3-4$/month
- If you plan on building a list, an auto responder, min 15$/month

I can't think of other top specific things, and I really want this information, since I builder some sites about 5 years ago, and I think one of the main reason they did not succeed was that I invested the minimum minimum (ie domain name), and I don't wanna make that mistake again.


So, wat are your ideas? Any WSO? Any plugin or template? (I'm using WP), any software?

I'd like to base my business in article marketing and affiliate programs.

    Other than what you've already posted - something I believe to be of more importance - I would heavily invest in content (high-quality content) and promotion. At the end of the day, when it comes down to the success of a website - content and getting that content in front of the right crowed is what's going to really bring results.

    You can invest in themes and domains and tools etc. all day, but none of that is going to move your website in the direction you want it to go - that is if you want it to become a popular resource.

    Anyways, I would invest in content and promotion.

      I agree with caseydennison about the content.

      Also, if you're going to be buying traffic, you'll want to invest in some traffic software. Voluum, Tracking202, and Cake Marketing are some good options.

      If you're going to pay for traffic, you want to know what is happening with it so you can tweak and optimize once you start to get some data.

      Wooops. I forgot to mention that the website is going to be about a field I really know about (chemistry) since its my job and my studies out there in the world, and I will poduce the cobtent myself and try to become an authority with it.

      About promotion, my plan was doing article marketing and article syndicating. Isnt this an approach that is free by definition? I mean, you already give content to the one who is publishing you.
      What other ways are out there of payed promotion?

      Im not planning on buy trafic, since Im targeting an specific and kinda "rare" niche.

    I am sure there will be relevant forums in your chemistry niche, you could try doing paid promotions there like buying stickies, ads

    When you say "my project", I hope you have the marketing plan all figured out in your head. Don't invest any of that money unless you have a marketing plan in place. By that I mean traffic, monetization, sales funnel etc.

      That's what I've need doing last days and still doing now. I want it to work well, and since I'm noob, I will take the time it takes me to get a good solid plan.

      Already know the basis: niche, how I will derive traffic to it (mostly syndication and relations with other authorities, and to a less extent viral and social network content), how I will monetize (affiliate market, by building a list and also reviewing). Now I'm starting to define my target audience by studying the market and then i will proceed to orient my content following what those people would like to read.

      I repeat I'm total noob, but I think that you have to learn once, (I failed with projects few years ago, so I don't start from nothing).



      Taking this, I try to get opinions about what should you invest in. By these answers I conclude that you don't need that much to start, considering that I will write almost 100% (as a hobby mostly, my niche is "my life") and promote and network by myself.

      Am I right? Because I saw many posts stating that you need about 200-300$ minimum to start a good business, and I'm not seeing that in my calculations, so please let me know if I miss something important to invest in from the beginning! (I really want to do this project well, even if it requires some money -not much, i only have some savings and still studying so no income till next year)

          Can't agree more. The main thing you need to succeed is your brain and persistence. Whenever you can use these two to the max and understand what you are doing - you are on the right path. Spending a ton of money without seeing the final goal in your mind and understanding the ways to reach it is simply a waste of time and money. Not 200 nor 2000 USD can help with that.

    Um...well, quality content comes in pretty high on the list. You need to get your content written by someone who is proficient in the language you're aiming for and who has a solid understanding of the niche you're in.

    You forgot your content. Will you be writing this yourself? If not, I would suggest hiring somebody to provide you with high quality content which is key.

    I would like to add:
    Invest in a good theme template. If you are using Wordpress there is a chance you can find good free theme but the best ones (and the ones that have support) are paid. And there is a good chance that this paid themes are also optimised for a better site speed.

      I've been looking at studiopress genesis. I might be able to buy one of its templates shared between 3 people I know (so reduced cost)
      As far as I'm concerned, there is no problem on doing that, isn it? Isn't it GPL, and if I have the files, I can use it legally and freely 100%?

    I agree with Casy, you website content must be first class, if you are not a good writer hire one that is very good and you must be selling something that will solve a problem for your niche

      As you can see over and over again in this thread, If you want your website to be on the top position in google, you need to invest in high quality content and good online marketing. At the end of the day, people want to read good articles that they can easily understand and are interesting. If you give people what they want, they will come back to you over and over again.
