I started one of those channels with my brother 2 years ago.

we made I think 10 videos, gained around 6000 subscribers and about 200,000 total video views.

      Total earnings of around $100-$150.

Unless your channel explodes and some of your videos go viral, it's not a viable money making method for the amount of time you need to put in.

Best thing is to see it the same way we did, as a bit of fun and a learning experience.

    To answer your question...

The majority of these videos are owned by surfers. In other words: they're not monetized.

The best way to monetize this market on YT is by list building. List building is the standard answer for everything on WF, or so it seems, but in this case I totally advocate it. Your target audience is flipping from one video to the next. They're not buyers. Not in a buying mood at the time at least. What you need is a fun offer and a fun list. Make it as simple as possible for them to quickly sign up and get something. Do this and you can grow your list pretty quickly and monetize it that way. Your offers then have more chance of reaching them when they're in the right mindset to take appropriate action. You'll do best by monetizing emails with free offers related to videos, games, and general entertainment. The trick is deciding on a relevant theme for your newsletter.

Quite a simple method you describe here, I am surprised people do not understand this yet.

As for me, I like watching prank videos, yet I consider them only as a mean to fight boredom, not as a way to sell me something - meaning these videos should bring joy and fame to their authors, not money

It all depends on how monetizable you and your video content are.

For example, there's this chick who got famous on Vine, making videos of her twerking.

Here's a cool little documentary about her, it's pretty interesting from a biz perspective...and the girl can twerk!

It's really hard to make good money with direct advertising on your Youtube videos. You're better off using them as lead generation to build a list or sell some kind of backend service, like this twerker girl who now does all these gigs and gets invited for photo shoots and what not.

That girl can twerk like a mofo. I hate how they relate it to Miley Cyrus, people were twerking years before her and she can't even do it.. ANY WAY.. lol

If they havn't activated ads I guess they are just doing it for popularity and the income they can make from the real world such as giggs and other paid performances.

I see a lot of comedians doing that.

To answer OP's question, I don't think it's just YouTube paying for views as the monetization model.

Product endorsements, cross sells with other channels, branding can bring in a whole load of income opportunities as well.

As I type this, I recall a lady who markets her unique weight loss product (by eating lots of bananas a day) via YouTube. She almost certainly makes way more by product sales than by income from views.

That's part of it. It depends.

Some of the YouTubers aren't making anything and just doing it to impress friends. However those smart enough with business sense aren't just doing pranks but actually building a brand. This brand then goes on shirts, which generates merchandise sales. One YouTuber that does 'pranks' full time and has a pretty good brand outlook I'd say is "Ownage Pranks" although he isn't doing pranks in the traditional sense that is talked about here (Video of someone doing something to someone unsuspectingly)... but rather does actual prank phone calls.

No. They put Adsense on them and then they go Viral.

Could you imagine if you just had a measly 1% CTR and just .20 CPC what you would make on this Video with over 2 billion hits ( 2,131,280,601 to be exact )

They DON'T make money. They do it for the LULz and they are ignorant about monetization.

If they do monetize them, they do it almost exclusively through Adsense because they don't know any better. That's how the majority of YouTube stars make money...Adsense. But they have the volume to make a big paycheck.

That's why I laugh when people talk about making money on Adsense, because you have to be a YouTube star or equivalent to make good money there.

I have tried dozens of money making programs. The only one that really worked for me was blogging. I made 10 times than all the other opportunities I tried combined.
