Talk about your business

There's one thing that I've noticed about marketers that I'd like to talk about. It's something that sounds simple, but for many people, it's quite hard to do. And that is just to talk about their business. I mean to your family, friends, the forums you post on. EVERYONE. Obviously don't be annoying about it, but just mentioning it can help. For example, the person you talk to may not have a need for your service or product, but someone they know might. You really just never know. The more people who know what you do, the better, yet I constantly find myself having to be the one to find out what the marketer does or sells. I just wanted to tell everyone that, as it seems that it's something many marketers just don't do, when I really believe they should.

I own a successful game site, and earn from ads found in my site.
I like playing online games, so having a game site is perfect for me
I started my business five years ago with poor looking site with almost no traffic, and since then I improved it several times. Now the site has grown considerably...

Traffic is important, and I've found that organic traffic is the best. If you participate in forums, etc. then it makes sense to always include a signature link, etc. Any type of visibility is good in my opinion. And you are right, awareness is the key.

Good quality traffic is everything. I agree with you on that.

The problem is that too many people try to get free traffic without ever focusing on PAID ads. They "try" free marketing techniques for months and then quit because they don't see any results.

My family and friends always seem kind of confused when I talk about my business. I don't bring it up unless they ask, but when I do they always want more details. I feel like they don't really want to understand it because they feel like because I don't have a 9-5 that what I do isn't credible.

This all changed a few months ago though when I showed my parents, my grandfather, and a few friends my online paypal accounts. They changed their minds pretty quickly haha It was a really cool feeling to show them my results

I talk about my business to my family & friends quite often. I taught a few of my friends some of my ebay strategies and 1 of them took it to a higher level than me and english is not his 1st language. He was doing about 10k per month buying pallets of freight and selling it on ebay.

Lol, we have the same experienced.
Most people around us won't understand the terms we speak nor the marketing method we used on approaching our audience, they seems like confuse and yes it's pretty difficult to understand for when you speak to a person that know nothing.

I talk about my Business all the time to Friends and Family. My unique Selling Point is:

''I help other Businesses and People slash their overheads and increase their profits so that they can spend more time with their Families''

I've actually helped people out and they are seeing tangible results with programs I'm involved with. It feels so nice to help others.

The secret is to show people genuine opportunities with proof of my personal dashboard.

I believe it's important to talk about your business to family and friends.

However, I believe it is just as important to really talk about your goals and business - with people that will be supportive, enthusiastic about what you're doing and offer constructive criticism.

And KEEP AWAY from negative people who think 'because I can't do it, no one else can'.

    Haters' gonna hate.

I started my business this week and I'm working hard on it so I just don't talk a lot about it yet, I've figured that a lot of people are sceptical about making money online so maybe that's the one reason why they don't want to talk. They are in fear if this is gonna work or not..

Yeah most people don't get what I do. Maybe I have a terrible elevator pitch.

I do some marketing for local businesses, which most people get, but that's a very small part of what I do and not a focus. However, it's something people understand.

As for being a niche blog publisher, it's beyond comprehension and/or interest for most people to inquire more.

My wife and I don't live all that ostentatiously, so maybe they think there's no money in it.

I refuse to discus it with people who aren't already interested.

They never understand what I do and long ago I got very tired of the same thing...

    Me: I make money online.

    Them: Porn?

Now I just say "Secret Agent" and refuse to say more.

If people are confused about what you do, you're explaining yourself badly!

For the past few months now, I've been trying to find someone new every week and then explain what I do in as short a time as possible and in the most simplistic way. This has ranged from family members, to potential business leads and even random people I've just met at gigs.

To start with, I was shocking and had to use images on my phone to explain my profession, but over time I've found the common confusion points and have found the best way to explain them.

Explaining what you do in person (and in as few a words as possible) is a goldmine for offline marketing and can even apply to conversion pages online, Twitter bio's etc.

I usually tell people I own ecommerce sites and they will say "oh, ebay?" *sigh*

I do sell on ebay (and Amazon occasionally), but my main income is from my 30 online stores. I started in 2001 with Sensualelegance.com for sexy clothing and shoes, then expanded as I found new vendors with products I could classify into other niches and markets and launched other stores based on my interests. Gothicplus.com is probably my most successful store at the moment, but all my stores get sales and support each other and all branch from my parent company Labeshops.com

Being on the singles scene, one of the first questions women want to know whether they say it or not, is -- "So, ... what do you do?

I used to tell them I'm a Niche Market Consultant. But the predictable question would always be (you guessed it) "What's a niche?" Even by some women who actually had a business, forcing us into a longer conversation about, ahem ... business! I discovered that's a perfect way to get "Friend Zoned" if you're not careful.

Now I just say, "I help small businesses separate their product or service from the competition". They get that quicker, allowing us to start (or get back to) the romantic talk quicker. Boom, problem solved.
