I'm here since 2009 but it doesn't mean that I'm that active here to read all threads. Heck I'm not even online most of the time. Have you even seen my post count? That should have given you an idea.

I decided to post this thread because I have lots of questions regarding this topic.

If you have nothing good to contribute on a thread, why don't you just shut the h3ll up and don't mind other's business. My goodness.

For a more helpful answer:

In a nutshell...no. This however is a grey area.

The best option for you to would be to contact the respective websites owner requesting public use of the image and provided the site you are placing your sitelink on and your reason, most webmasters would say yes (I never refuse a good link from a decent and relevant site)

Your other option is to dump a few bucks into a stock photo/vector site such as istockphoto or depositphotos and that way you 1) don't have to worry 2) obtain much better quality images 3) give yourself more motivation to make that money back.

Oh yeah, and without being as sarcastic and hopeless as the first reply you got on here, do try the search feature on the site bro!

I know how to use search feature of course, it's just that sometimes you'll have follow up questions and you need to put up your own thread instead of bumping a 5 years old thread and hijack it.

Giving credit doesn't mean you have permission to use the content. I ran into big trouble when someone sold me a logo they got off another site (there's a thread on that here too) without me knowing about it. So, my opinion - don't copy.

Images, just like text, are subject to copyright laws. These laws aren't particularly difficult to understand. In a nutshell you would be wise to regard any image on any website as being protected by copyright unless there is a specific notation that says the image is free to use or is in the public domain. Even then you can't be certain that whoever has said the image is free to use really knows that it is or is just copying that information from another website.

The only way to be certain that you are not infringing someone's copyright is to use your own images or buy them from a legitimate stock image company. Most of these stock photo companies can supply images for less than the cost of paying for an article.

Ignore the advice given above about it being safe to use any image you like as long as you give some form of attribution. Although this seems to be a common misconception it is completely wrong and provides no protection at all if you use a copyrighted image without permission.

The bottom line is that images belong to the person who owns the copyright and, like any other property that belongs to someone else, you can't just take it and use it as if it were yours.

As per my knowledge, you can put an image from any website but make sure to mention the web address bellow an image from where you have taken that image.

OMG. This forum can have great information. It can also have the worst possible information. Sometimes, one wonders if intentionally incorrect information is posted.

Rule of Thumb: No, you can not use an image from another website. Giving a reference does not make the theft legal.

Are there exceptions for fair use and can copyright law be complex? Sure. If you're unsure stick with the rule of thumb.

Anyway, I'm seeing like news channels who are broadcasting video clips from other news companies or even videos from websites but they're putting up where the video source is came from. For example CNN is using youtube's video but they're putting up the source which is youtube and the user who uploaded it or sometimes CNN is using other news company live stream and etc.

I guess it depends on the rules on where are you getting it right? or there's a law that it's ok to use a content as long as you put up where it came from?

CNN and Youtube are not "You and Another Website"

If you don't want a honest and professional opinion such as "ask the webmaster for permission" why do you even come here and ask such questions? It seems you will only accept what you WANT to hear and don't care about solid advice from people who make a living off the net and have done for years.

Almost all videos on YouTube are licensed to be shared on other sites. It is one of the terms for using the site and why there are 'share' links under videos.

Depends. Do they own the image, or have they just bought the license to use it on their site. If the latter is true, then you would be better off not using the image, since you'll be violating copyright.

If they own it, you might want to ask their permission before you use it. Some photographers are fine with you sending a backlink back to their site in return for using their image, but some expect you to buy a license.

I personally wouldn't risk getting sued by photographers or stock photo companies by using their photos without their permission. Apparently they love suing people.

You can find a number of free and cheap stock photos online; you might want to look into that.

I would suggest using stock photos for such a reason. The costs are OK and you stay out of trouble.
Shutterstock for example is a great stock source.

There are also a lot of free stock sites, but the for the real good pictures you have to pay for.
