There have been a few blogs that I have learned from in the past.

One of them is The Smart Passive Income Blog — Smart Ways to Live a Passive Income Lifestyle On the Internet with SmartPassiveIncome.com

Pat is really a self made millionaire blogger. You can go back and look at his initial entries years ago and see his gradual improvements . Really interesting

I'm going to give you one piece of advice:

Become an authority figure on one topic.

The majority of newcomers who start blogging to make money will fail. They're going to fail for myriad reasons, but one of them - probably the biggest reason - is they fail to understand the value of becoming an authority online.

Interesting replies, I like the authority idea, but I suspect that becoming a known authority is quite different than the idea of becoming an authority blogger.

The concept is sound, I have found that the best way to write about a topic is to have a keen interest in that topic, call it passion or pessimism or something in between but find that niche that supplies real solutions or answers real needs that a lot of people have.

Searching for answers to common problems is not hard to discover.

get in there and find a place to get started, it is true that you may not get rich doing this but its certainly worth pursuing, mostly because its relatively cheap to get into blogging.

All you really need is a hosting account and a domain name, (some people do well on some publishing platforms) but for the most part its better to use your own host, domain name and wordpress, you can do that for less than the cost of a pizza per month.

Blogging isn't hard at all. I would suggest getting cheap hosting a domain name and using wordpress. I would suggest looking on youtube to see how to set your domain name to your blog.

The key to blogging success is consistencyof putting valuable content around a particular niche and building an audience and an email list. You need to decide on what topic/topics you want your blog to become an authority blog on. What is your target audience, what are their pains, needs, frustrations, and what solutions you can provide. The goal of your blog is to build an audience and to build your email list.

Always have some sort of call to action on your blog posts. Develop a consistent schedule of blogging and know how you are going to monetize your blog.

Blogging is about sharing with a community something you are knowledgeable and/or passionate about (better be both) generally in the form of article writing.

If you are just starting out, I would suggest you find a couple of popular blogs in your targeted niche on Google (or Bing...) and learn from those bloggers, the way they write the posts, the way they interact with their readers.

Blogging is a cool way to generate an extra income. Once you decide on your niche, you set up your Blog, preferably using WordPress, there are ton and tons of videos on YouTube for how to do this and if in doubt you can always pay someone to do it for you on sites like Fivver.com.

The key is to provide value to your readers and get them engaged.

If you can, offer them some sort of freebie on your Blog so they sign up to your email list, and then it's traffic on demand each time you create a new blog post. Send your list an email telling them all about your latest post.

A lot of great advice here from everyone.

One of the most important things you should do is to develop your own voice as a blogger. Don't bother imitating others. And, don't write in a very formal voice. Most people who read blogs want to actually 'hear' what you are saying, so write in the most natural sounding way possible. One way to do this is by simply dictating your blog posts and then transcribing for your post online. Another thing you can do to ensure your success as a blogger is to ally with other like minded niche bloggers to cross promote via article marketing and syndication.

Regardless of the course you choose to learn from (sure some people will provide suggestions), the first thing you need to do is to decide what niche market you want to go into (i.e. weight loss/health and fitness, cooking, pet care, toys, electronics, video games, etc). Think about what you like to do for fun, your hobbies.

Your first niche should be something you know a little bit about (so you'll have an easier time connecting with your audience and stuff when you have to write content. For instance, I was a Spanish major in college. The first site I created was targeted to people who wanted to learn Spanish. You might have to play around a while to figure out what niche you want to go into.

    Good luck,
    Joey

There are two kinds of domain & hosting. Free & Paid. If you want to use the paid domain & hosting, you need to buy these. There are many company who sell these. On the other hand if you want to use the free version, you can use the blogspot or, wordpress. These 2 sites provide the blogging at a free of cost. thanks

I wrote an entire book on just beginning as a blogger but I'll try to summarize some important points for you to avoid making a lot of the same mistakes I made.
    1. Focus on one small niche. Make sure you know a lot about it, or are willing to learn a lot about it.
    2. Make sure there is actually profit to be made in this niche.
    3. Spend more time marketing your content than writing new content. For me it's about 80% marketing/networking and 20% writing.
    4. Network with other bloggers. This is key. Blog commenting and email and guest blogging are great for this.
    5. Don't rely on any one traffic method, ESPECIALLY Google.
    6. Don't rely on any one monetization method either.
    7. Build an email list from Day 1. Keep in contact with this list regularly. This will most likely be your biggest money maker.
    8. Understand that blogging can take a ton of time, and that it may be a while before the blog gets off the ground actually earns money.

I'm sure there's a million other things I could've mentioned here, but those ones come to mind right away.

What is your niche? Have you taken any decision? To start blogging you need focus about some basic of blogging.
DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO BLOG ABOUT

DECIDE WHICH BLOGGING PLATFORM TO USE, FREE OR SELF-HOSTED?

Visual content will only get bigger

Growing a mailing list is still the most important thing

It’s time to get smart about competition analysis

    Long content still works

It’s time to spend money on promotion

    Make big connections early

Google+ will grow to the point of necessity

Responsive blog designs are a must

Buying blogs will get more popular

    SEO will change

First thing to know: blogging is providing indispensable content to your audience.

Anything less than indispensable, and you'll struggle. So the others are right-focus on one niche and damn well master it. Here are three of my favourite 'blogs'...see how varied they are:

Seth Godin. Marketer extraordinaire. He posts only when he has something to say, and some of those posts can be two or three lines long.

The Art of Manliness. A classic example of the authority blog. Well-researched and crisply-written articles. All substance.

MLB Trade Rumors. This was started as an ongoing blog by Tim Dierkes nearly a decade ago. He followed all the national and local baseball reporters, and posted their rumours and news in real time. It's now an industry staple and he has a hired team of full-time writers.

So you can kinda mould a blog into whatever you want it to be, so long as it is seriously servicing your audience. Don't be that guy who gets PLR or ghostwritten articles, and be sure you can handle talking about your niche into the long term.

Yeah blogging is a great place to start - and is also a fantastic tool to build a long term relationship with your customers.

I'd highly recommend going straight in to getting your own domain name and then installing wordpress on to that domain. Your hosting provider will allow you to do this in the cpanel of the site :-)

There's worse things you can do than just pick a blogging platform i.e hosted or self-hosted, wordpress or blogger and start writing. I do that with all three of my blogs and whilst they don't have huge readership i.e literally 10's, 100 hundreds at most, it's fun and it's great to put your thoughts out there.

Blogging is really really easy! Picking a niche might be the trickiest part.
You'd need to start by getting a domain name and hosting. Try not to use the self hosted platforms, like blogger or wordpress, if they go down, your blog goes down with them. Plus, you won't have the freedom to do what you want with your blog.

Next, install Wordpress. It's really easy to install, you just download it and install it on your server (look for tutorials online on how to do this, it's really easy!)

And now... happy blogging! You just need to write quality articles as often as you can!

I guess we are all replying to the general public since the OP has never came back to the thread. But if the information is helpful we can all benefit so its all good.

Everybody will have a different viewpoint on blogging. Some people consider a personal blog and just blog about themselves while others see it as a real business venture.

The key is to first imagine where you see your blog down the road. What is your goal?

There are bloggers who blog about blogging and that is an evergreen niche actually to get into.

I view blogging as an extension of yourself to help formulate deeper relationships with your audience, readers, subscribers.

There is alot of behind the scenes techy stuff to learn as you go but its better to focus more on your reader than Google. Google is very fickle anyway..what works today may not tomorrow so focus on the benefit to your reader and Google may find that very appealing anyway.

Focus on quality and your blog becomes a real asset in your business that becomes more and more valuable with time and effort.

I would suggest create a blog that helps with problems in your niche. You can do this by looking through forums and Yahoo answers, looking at the different problems propose are having in your niche find the answers to them. After that you want to create blog post on your blog with the question and the answers to them.

a critical step in my opinion is the acquisition of a squeeze page in your blog to stay in touch with potential buyers, word press can help you so much, and with fiverr can complete the work, but above all you have to offer something that the manca..di people which feel the need, just so your blog will work!

    My suggestion:

    1) First of all decide about your niche or category. For example you may want to blog about some sports related topic.

    2) Now google and find top blogs in your niche. See how are they doing it. Take notes.

    3) Create a WP based website and use some good web host like hostgator. Domain name from godaddy.

    4) Try to write long posts (1000+ words) with useful content. Focus on some issues and try to provide solutions in your post. OR write some reviews about any hot product/service/person in your niche.

    5) Create a facebook fan page and share your website posts on it. Pay little money to buy Page LIKES by advertising on facebook. This will bring some traffic to your page and to your website.

    6) Signup to some auto-responder service like Getresponse.com and collect email addresses of your website visitors from day-1. Engage with your subscribers regularly and keep them informed about your latest posts, news etc.

    7) Keep on adding high quality and unique content. Your first target should be to add at least 100 long posts of 1000+ words on your website.

    8) Create a board pinterest and add image for each post there.

    9) Create a twitter account for your blog. Follow other people in your niche. Some of them will follow you back. Keep your twitter account updated.

There may be many more things to do. But I think by doing all above you will start seeing some good results.

    Good Luck!
