I am from Nepal and generally I don't speak English.I am not frequent in that so I make too many error. Should I write articles for earning or not. My English is not up to the mark but I can make people understand the things from my writing.

  • Well hello there sir! I am also not an English native speaker but I do generally write articles and reviews if I'm asked to do it. Still I do try my best to always present a reasonable English. Maybe you should really try to improve your English first, and then do reviews mate!

Unfortunately, "making people understand things from your writing" isn't good enough.

One way or another, directly or indirectly, the only realistic, long-term ways to make money from writing articles are by making the readers of the articles want to read "more of the same." This is so whether you're monetizing your own articles, or selling them.

I apologize for sounding disparaging, but making a living online is difficult. Trying to do it by writing articles in your second language (unless you're pretty fluent in it) is really putting yourself under a huge and unnecessary handicap. I would look for another way.

I'm afraid that many people will probably tell you the opposite of what I'm saying. You'll have to decide for yourself which people you want to believe. Just be aware that in the "$5-$10 articles" marketplace, there are nearly as many service-providers as customers, and there are reasons for that.

One thing people do not understand is the term "mother tongue". That term refers to the native language of a persons birth. The language their mother taught them. This "first" language is the not just more easily understood, it is also more easily comprehended. By that I mean, it is easier to convey your message using your mother tongue to other people who have the same mother tongue!

You may think "you are making people understand things", but even good translators fluent in both the languages work very hard to make people "understand" their message!

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and our literature is translated into more languages than any one elses. I'm not a translator, but I do know a little about the process!

      BTW, nice post Alexa.

I advice you to forget writing in English; you'll fail, you are competing with talented writers. Target your own country If I were you, in your own language ang country.

You don't need to write articles to make money. Use your brain, brain storm, think of an idea on how you can make money in your country.

      Pin,
Do not give up. Keep working at your English. It is not so bad.

However, I would abstain from trying to write Articles for others until you do improve some.

I think with some work over time you will get there

If you're not up to the job, don't do it! I know that sounds harsh, but the online world can be a hard and unforgiving place - especially if you don't know what you're doing.

You say you know basic C programming, so if I were you I'd look for simple C programming jobs online. They won't pay a lot, but they will pay something - plus you'll be able to practice and improve your C skills. When you're proficient enough, you'll be able to write your own software and sell that online as a product.

If I were you and had a decent knowledge of what I was writing about, I would write the articles. But, I would also go to fiverr or some freelance site like odesk or elance and hire an editor, most editors for articles work at fairly reasonable prices. You could even get a better deal if you had them do multiple articles at a time

There is no wall. There is no problem. There is no negative about anything. It´s all about the way you see things.

It seems to me you are stuck with thinking that english + articles is the only way to make money. You won´t. That´s being blunt, but honest.

And for whatever reason you might think that you are stuck with no ways of making money, you are only making it difficult for yourself. Instead of saying "I will be left without earning money again", tell yourself you ARE going to make money by doing something YOU have experience with or know. Simple as that.

There are no problems, only solutions. Tell yourself that, and start thinking about your qualities, your qualifications, what makes you, you? What can you do, to provide something of value to others? Do you know how to make a specific product, or have a certain skill that you can monetize? Internet marketing is hard, and all though there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of - you will fail really, really hard if you are diving in head first knowing you can´t swim beforehand. If you are willing to learn by doing on the other hand..

If you still think you should dvelve into the realm of Internet marketing, then study. Literally study for hours and hours, each and every day like you were studying for a masters degree or a doctors degree. It takes even more than that to fully understand the potential and monetizing opportunities behind IM.

I tried freelance writing in English when I started (Spanish native speaker) and I definitely don't recommend you do that. Then I translated from English into Spanish but, let me tell you, translating is way too time consuming and plain boring!

If you can't get gigs coding or programming give translation a try but only do it with topics you are already familiar with and only from a second language into your own language and NEVER the way around.

As you are from NEPAL, Your mother tongue may be hindi. at the same way all people around the globe, are not the only English country. Most English is the second language, by this second language, one can speak & wright properly. So you need to learn the language properly. Beside this you can start your writing. But low qualities articles does not approve by all. So you need to make prepare yourself. Thanks

With my experience in outsourcing article writing, I would say that if you are looking to begin in the content writing field start from scratch. What I mean by this is try out various freelance sites such as oDesk, Freelancer and Elance and bid on projects with a low pay. That's how I started out to get feedback. In fact, I began writing articles at US$1 each, then $5 each, and now I'm getting orders for up to $20 each article. The most I've earned per 500 words is about $35. Heck, some clients pay from $50 to $100 per article, but they usually have high demands for quality which is understandable.

As you get better at writing, and as you begin to better understand the English language and writing flow more thoroughly, you can drastically increase your earnings. For you, $1 to $2 per article may be a good pay. And there are a ton of clients that are hiring on freelance sites for that amount. Some are paying as low as $0.50 though.

You never know, within 1 month, or 3 months, you could be earning $5 per article or more. It's all about building experience and skill. Earning potential is only limited to our own beliefs.

It's all about working your way up the ladder; as you gain experience, knowledge and skill in a field, then the amount you earn tends to increase. If you really want to write, then it's up to you if you want to pursue your dreams. But you'll have to remember that most of us, such as myself, have to start from somewhere to get where we want to go.

Confidence is one of the main factors impacting the quality of the article you would write. You could the answer by yourself on the confidence level on your ability in writing. Trust your own judgement.

I am a Thai living in Thailand and English is not my mother tongue too. Now, I am in the stage of developing my English writing skill as well. What I do is I write the emails regularly while writing articles from time to time to my subscribers. Just to practice and progress on this skill as I realize that it is crucial to my business.

You are now studying in India and you have the advantage in exposing yourself in the community that people can communicate in English daily. It is still one of the main languages people communicate in the world. Do you have any action plan on how to spend your time enhancing this skill?

In terms of IM business, there are other skill needed too but the writing in a persuasive way is something you may learn and even produce faster as you have engaged in writing skill much more than others. To make it short, writing skill gives you an advantage as an IM because you need to reach out to the prospects via what you would write.

Good luck to you, Pin, and your coming IM function you would finally select.

It is not important where are you from? What is your country, but it is too much important how much expert you are? One not native English speaker may gather knowledge to do good. So you may be expert from NEPAL to write a good article. So you need to learn the English language correctly. Thanks.

Absolutely correct. Actually the translator can make translated word only. They are not able to translate full sentence exactly its meaning. Because the translator has no sense as human. they translate only words meaning.

Why don't you try writing short reports? You can write a short report around 17-21 pages, and have someone from fiverr edit it for you. Research a topic, write it in your own words, and get it edited.
Then sell it, you could earn and learn at the same time!

Well you can really write about any niche that interest you, and the key is to research it, if its not a topic that you do not know a lot about. ( I was thinking of the internet marketing niche, but there are a lot of other niches that do well.) And why not sell it on the warrior forum?, or set up a website to sell it on.
By the way your english grammar is a lot better than some of the short reports I have bought from here!, but I really would suggest you have it edited by someone on Fiverr, or maybe someone at the university you are going to.

This won't require proper English skills and there might be a better market and certainly easier to complete this type of work. Well, if you can't write it well. I have two options for you.

    1) Hire somebody to write it for you.
    - easy as it sounds, you pick your topics and keywords
    - then hire somebody else (native english speaker) from elance, iwriter etc
    - pick writer that have high ratings

    2) Hire somebody to proof read your article
    - write your article (probably as a draft), do your proof read as detail as possible in your level.
    - then hire someone to proof read the article,
    - you can get it cheaper this way.

    Extra note:
    - there are some free proof read software out there such as ginger software, that lets you to auto-correct english mistakes.. however I don't have any experience using it..

Hope this helps a little bit..

Here's why I don't recommend it: Native English speakers have a hard time getting decent rates for our articles - only with lots of experience and excellent writing skills can you get to the point where you can make a decent living doing writing. So if you wanted to write and then hire an editor, that's not a feasible business model - your editor will charge enough that your profit will be very low.

I would honestly recommend that you find a niche where English ability isn't going to be a barrier. I work with web designers, programmers, and graphic designers from all over the world and I love it! But I won't hire writers who aren't native English speakers, and depending on my client, I sometimes limit my writers to native AMERICAN English speakers (or Canadian, or Australian, or UK, depending on the client). Financially, you can make just as much (and sometimes more!) by working in a niche that doesn't demand native English skills, so why not do that?

If you're not a native it doesn't mean that you can't write well. you just need to invest some time in improving your writing. Try publishing articles on Ezine Articles, they are hard to impress and so your writing will improve a lot.
Watch some vedioes, and read books.

After a few months you'll see the difference. I am not a native either, and I struggled with english but now I think i do fine.

  • As I know both sides, I'd like to share my thoughts and experiences, too.

    1. The wirter's side:
I'm a native German content writer with > 20 years of experience as a journalist, book author and writer. Most of my income is built on German articles, as this is my mother tongue. Sb else here pointed out already what this means. In the past I tried to write English articles, but I did stop this for several reasons. Though I do speak English, my English is not good enough for high quality articles, especially if it comes to certain niches and topics. If you don't know the correct terms and expressions, your articles will be rather poor (besides, I did learn British English at school, but meanwhile mix it up with AE due to my online businesses). You won't get paid much for such articles, if at all. If you write in your mother tongue first and then start translating, it wouldn't also result in a HQ article, because you would translate word by word but lack the specific something that makes an article by a native writer. And it's the worst advice here to translate using Google. I do a lot of such translations, and the results aren't really readable. It gives you an idea of the article, and you might use some sentences. But you will have to rewrite a lot. Just an example: Google often omits words and therefore changes the meanings (at least what I saw when translating from English to German). I'm also on Freelancer.com which some months ago has started partnering with WF. Truth is: There are lots of jobs and lots of appliers, experienced ones as well as freshers. Rates have become very bad. Besides FL takes at least 10 percent from each earning, so if you have a job to write 10 articles, you'll write one for the FL system. If it's a small job (some bucks), they even charge a lot more than the 10 percent. It's maybe good to start, but I wouldn't (and don't) only go this way.

    2. The content buyer's side
I write most of my content my own. I saw lots of articles from native German writers. Most of these articles were full of grammar and spelling errors and even bad researched (as I know my niches, e.g. in the health niche, I know what's state of the art, what's outdated and what's evergreen myth). So really, if I look into Freelancers and see people from Pakistan or India or somewhere else applying for jobs that are offered for native Germans -- what could such foreigners really pretend to deliver? On the other side, I don't mind buying a report or a video course from people who don't speak English like a native. Because I just need the information, not a perfect show. So I really appreciate communicating in one common language.

So, to shorten it up and summarize, what others here already told you: Don't waste your time and money writing articles in English. If you'd like to start writing reports (obviously you did quite start), do it. Else look for jobs concerning your mother tongue. This market might be smaller, but you're already in it and know how it works. Look what your people needs (content, research, help on Wordpress, SEO, Video, Online Marketing ...). If you have sth. that sb needs, he will pay for it.

HTH -- good luck & much success ;-)

In that conditions you may not get good rate for your writting.
so, i would not suggest it.
But, if you are truly passionate about it, you can go for it. after couple months or years, you can make your own authority blog.

Before going , i suggest to do more research.

You could hire someone to proof read your articles, as said above I've also seen non-native English speakers do well. You can also learn from the changes made to your writing to help yourself improve your own writing in the long run.

I am not a native English speaker but I started my online life as an article writer and I earned pretty well. But if you are afraid for grammatical errors then do some study and practice. Try to read the articles on other's site.

If you get good $$ for your articles, you can send your articles for proof-reading. Your articles will be top quality, you will be making money, get reputation and learn from natives how to write properly.

Don't think writing is your best bet, maybe just hire a native english speaking VA (Virtual Assistant) to translate your articles.

Do whatever you can and outsource the final stages [like proof-readings]. Every day try to do more. Try to proof-read articles done by other people. That will push you forward marginally.
