Affiliate networks and refunds!

Ok so it is my understanding that many of the "big" affiliate sites such as Clickbank will not pay you commission on a sale that was made that subsequently leads to a refund. Is there such a thing where this does not occur and the affiliate gets paid regardless as they did their job well in the first place so why get punished? If such sites exist can you tell me about them? Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

You can simply just promote a CPA offer and get paid for an action. So regardless of sales, refunds or charge backs you will still get paid.

That being said, there's something called scrubbing which is a another problem in the CPA world.

The reason why affiliates don't get paid for a refunded sale is due to the protection of the affiliate network and seller. It goes both ways really and this topic can turn into a mass debate but at the end of the day...

As an affiliate, you will get sales that gets refunded and there's really nothing you can do about it besides trying to promote a good product to keep the refund low.

Refunds are just part of business. The only thing you can do is make sure you promote a quality product. I'm working in a niche right now (non-internet marketing-related) that I've been in since April of this year -- haven't had one single refund (yet). You could do a C.P.A. offer, but those don't pay much from what I recall (basically just helping the advertiser to build his or her list).

Yes I have thought about CPA offers but I was just wondering if there was around the refunds associated with affiliate offers or if it was just something we all have to accept. Glad to see you havent had any refunds as yet which is great!

So as I thought it is just something we have to accept. Was worth asking though

In ClickBank's case, they pay the affiliate commission first, and if a refund is made during the 60-day period, they then withhold it from your future earnings. There are no normal circumstances under which you actually have to repay it to them. (It comes to the same thing, in the long run, of course.)

I hope it is. Such facilities wouldn't survive for long, and would be extremely open to affiliate fraud.

The important concept to appreciate about refunds of ClickBank (and some other) products is that they vary hugely between different affiliates for the same products. Affiliate behavior and pre-selling methods are by far their primary determinants.

That last paragraph really resonated with me. Makes so much sense! I always understood that the quality of the product itself was the main reason a product would have a high refund rate, which of course would be the creators issue not the affiliate (although the affiliate should probably steer clear of such products anyway) but thinking that the integrity and sales methodology of the affiliate also has a lot to do with it was somewhat of an elusive obvious for me. Thanks!

I agree, refunds are a part of doing business. Brick and motar stores have service desks for their refunds. It's going to happen whether we like it or not, online and off.
