using phone verification to cut down fraudulent purchases...

anyone have any experience with using phone verification services to try and cut down on the number of fraudulent purchases?

if so did it help or not?

seems chargebacks or unauthorized transactions have been on the increase the past month

sadly i take it as being part and parcel of selling products/services online but would like to try and minimize it as best as i can... also it puts me off running my own affiliate schemes too

any advice greatly appreciated

    If they are going to cheat you they will also lie to any telephone caller - that's if they provide a telephone number in the first place..

    There have been so many questions on this subject but the general opinion seems to be that it is something you must live with. Odd.

    You may want to try plimus.com as they do this... you can mail them and ask about the process benefits etc, they are in a good position to give you some good info on this.

    I would think it depends on the price point and your exposure. For an ebook, no way, but for hard goods that you must put out money for and ship it might be a good idea. For services over a certain level it might also be viable, although I might be looking into an escrow service instead.

    Most companies I see doing this only use it when the price threshold has been passed and when the client does not have an established purchasing history with them already.

    Its definitely a good idea if you are dealing with high priced transactions.

    thanks guys i appreciate all your feedback

    i had a flurry of bad transactions this month that totalled around $400 from almost $8000 in sales i guess thats 5% bad transactions would you say that is average or on the high side?

    last month and previous months has been about 2.5% average hence why my concern

    at this point i dont mind spending $400 to keep that % lower... but would be interesting what percentage of bad sales people expect to incur or prepared to live with?
