The Day The Internet Stood Still...

A few years ago, during a very cold winter, I was lying down on the pavement, at the Victoria Train Station, London.

In my hand, I held a very important book, the title of which I will share with you at the end of this story.

That year, I ended up homeless, and all virtually all my belongings were in the backpack I was carrying. A tired laptop, with a couple of missing keys was my most priced possession.

I'm still not sure how I survived, but it was great to have access to the Internet at the library. I would sleep at the train station at night, and write code for a Wordpress plugin during the day. Occasionally, I would "visit" an acquaintance and spend the night on their couch.

Here is what is really important.

In my despair, I had no choice. I had to make something work, this online marketing thing HAD to F***** WORK OR I COULD DIE!!!

And then... it happened. As far as I'm concerned, the whole of the Internet stopped. It just stood still.

People were buying the product I had put out!

When I refreshed my PayPal account, there was about $50. Then $100. Then $500. At the end, it ended up being my first $10,000 weekend.

I could finally get something nice to eat, and get a comfortable bed in a hotel, whilst I sorted everything else out. And I was inspired, I knew I could do it again.

More importantly YOU can do it too!

The secret I discovered is that you have to focus on ONE thing - solving a single, most pressing problem for a group of people. Just one problem that people are willing to pay money for. No tricks, no gimmicks - just one problem.

Hopefully, you're somewhere warm as you are reading this. If having the right mindset helped me get out of the streets, you probably can have it that much easier.

So go out there, solve one problem, for one group of people, and make some money!

P.S. The book I was reading was "The Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace D. Wattles.

Awesome story! Just goes to show if you want something bad enough you will make it happen no matter what.

Great tip about focusing on one thing. Sometimes people try to do so much they end up doing absolutely nothing.

      Hey AdwordsMogul,
      Nice story.

I love that you empathized ALL it can take sometimes is to solve ONE important problem people are having.

I think too many people these days are trying to be 'all things to all people.'
They should pick just ONE ( at least in the beginning) and concentrate on that.

      Hello Heather,

Thank you, it means a lot to me that someone appreciates it. People are overwhelmed trying to do "everything" - but certain situations force you to just think clearly and take action.

Yep. Unfortunately we often have to have no other choice before we actually have the courage and clarity to step out and go for what we want.

I appreciate that, Robert. Understanding that "little bit" is what changed this for me. And you're right, many people struggle just because they try to please everyone.

Well done... It's funny how the line between complacency, and doing the impossible is a thin one. If at the time you'd had an income, that maybe just covered your bills, you might have been just comfortable enough to maintain status quo , or too fearful of losing what you did have to take any real chances. Maybe? Thoughts? Regardless, I enjoyed your testimony.

      You make a good point...

The thing is, I got into that situation by taking a risk that backfired. So I did take a chance.

What made the difference this time is that I had a laser sharp focus and conviction. When that cold gets into your bones you either:

      a) give up and blame whoever/whatever you can for your troubles
      b) you make up your mind, and go for it.

When you're in a tough situation, you forget about Facebook messages ( especially when you realise that none of your FB "friends" is going to help you, for what ever reason).

You don't go looking for the next big thing, you don't spend the evening watching funny YouTube videos ( btw, nothing agains funny YT videos )

It's like, your own B.S. gets out of the way. You don't just try to stay busy - you actually get work done. Every single thing you do has to have a purpose. Plus, when the library is shut, you have a lot of time to reflect, hehe.

Thanks, you know, all the comments here are very encouraging. It's good that you mentioned complacency - it's causing me re-examine myself now as well.

      All the best,

This is probably the best post I've ever read here on the WF. I always tell my friends that someone always has it worse than them and some of them will have the determination and mindset to get out of that so instead of moaning how bad things are actually get up and do something about it.

        • Love the story and love the follow up.

It is kind of shocking that the same brains that get us in a jam are the same brains that can blast us into the stratosphere with success.

I could really relate on so many levels my friend.

I also had a very early taste of huge financial success but I was not prepared for it at that time.

Did I invest it back into my business? Create more automation and or outsourcing?

Well let's just say making mistakes sure can be alot of fun sometimes.

They say be careful what you wish for and success is included in that.

Many of us can have reverse rags to riches tales because we may sacrifice health, over indulge, not bring in fresh talent to assist us on and on.

For me it is always the time for giving thanks and I am thankful of your story and the outcome.
