Hey Warriors,

So sorry for the vague title, couldn't think of anything that could precisely describe the problem. But, I'm in a (probably) deep trouble, so here you go -

A couple of months back, I sold a product selling site.

Got the payment, transferred the domain.

The new owner e-mailed me that he was new to Internet and that he wanted the site to stay on my server.

I was okay with it and let him continue for free.

Also, I gave him some marketing advice.

Until now, it was all good. Today, I got an email saying that I was changing the payment links to my paypal at the "exact" moment someone ordered. And thus, I'm stealing sales from him.

Thus, he's asking for a refund and a compensation for me stealing sales.

If I don't issue him a refund plus compensation, he's going to speak bad about me everywhere.

Well, of course, this is not true. I've not even touched the site after it was sold. And there's no way I could change the paypal links at the exact moment someone orders. I had even deleted all the products, buy links and everything from my main merchant account.

So, I was a bit blank on what to reply. I've replied to him that there's no way I could have changed those paypal links at the exact moment someone ordered, and that I'd install the site on his server should he buy some space.

I wanted to ask this - Is there any way to prove I didn't even log in to the cPanel account, nor made any FTP contact? Now, I know for a fact that I didn't do that, so is there anything that could help me? I'm thinking about IP logs, or something on those tracks... Is that possible with cPanel? What should I do?

Wow Swastik, that sucks. Sounds like he's trying to scam you big time.

yes, there are access logs. If you have cPanel you should have access to them. You'll be able to prove based on IP address who accessed the server and when.

Someone else could be hacking your server. It happens.

I would also recommend that you no longer host his site.

Yeah, I've a VPS and his site, hosted with me, is on cPanel.

Now, I'm off to finding out where exactly those access logs are.

I'm not sure someone else would be hacking, but we'll see.

I've also e-mailed him that I'm ready to move the site to his server any time he wants.

Edit: Okay, I found those for another site of mine. Now, I'm off to sleep. When he replies back, I'd just ask him to extract the access logs for his website and it'll prove that I have not even accessed the server!!

      Thanks a lot Karen!!

Face it Swastic - the guy is simply running a scam and hoping that you will roll over and pay.

He has made an accusation that he cannot support and which PayPal would not even accept into their resolution system since it is not possible to monitor a site in such a way that will enable you to switch the destination of the encrypted PayPal button 'at the exact moment of sale'.

Depending upon the payment method used when he started this operation, the chances are he will be able to get a refund from the payment processor any way. Slander and libel are still criminal offences so that part of his threat is probably just to make you feel vulnerable.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

Nothing can go wrong provided that you are pretty sure with yourself that you have done anything wrong. Best thing to do is disregards the person, go on with your life, host a different site.
