can you describe what you do to your mother?

INTERNET MARKETING

This is something that I hesitate to admit, but as a digital marketer I have an incredibly difficult time at networking events because I can't easily describe in simple terms (is: so simple my mother could understand)
1) what a digital strategist does
2) why your business needs me
3) how I can help your business

Now its not that I can't do my job, I just have a hard time explaining it to people without falling back on jargon. So how would you answer these in a simple jargon free manner?

Tell 'em: Information is costly/expensive. And you sell information to people online with internet as the medium. My mother calls it making money from thin air

"I look at a business, find the missing / weak links, build out a strategic plan to fix these issues while bringing targeted customers together with the seller."

Then show some your prospects some recent results.

Then you have a hard time at salesmanship.

1) what a digital strategist does
2) why your business needs me
3) how I can help your business

You make people money. And from there you should expand your explanation.

Some cause-oriented hackers recently hacked one of my websites. So I researched what they're about and then donated a large sum of money to the entity they hate the most.

The next time they hack one of my websites I'm going to donate DOUBLE.

To be honest, I have no idea myself what a "digital strategist" does, or what it really means at all. (And I'm sure my mother doesn't, either, though she's very web-literate.) Even that sounds like "jargon", to me.

I think you have a very serious business problem.

Let me explain. Not that it can't be overcome, but if you personally struggle to explain what you do to a non-technical person, how are you ever going to promote your business to new clients?

The "tech types" that might understand the jargon are not usually the ones that control the money in a business. They are not the people that you need to convince to hire you.

Think about this for a moment: If you were looking to hire someone to do what you do, would you hire a person that couldn't explain what he offered and couldn't even tell you in simple terms what he does for a living? Most certainly not.

You have a communication issue that needs to fixed right now. And not by someone in a public forum.

Reduce what you do to the very simplest of terms. Break it down into steps or tasks if you have to. Order those steps in terms of importance. Begin with the very most important thing your company does for someone else. All other tasks can be added on as extras if need be.

I would contend, you don't have a viable business if you can't tell regular people what you do in one simple sentence.

  Seriously, though. I tell her I offer consulting services to small online business owners and provide information ,some paid for some not, to increase efficiency of their online operations.

It's easier to just say it's classified and you aren't allowed to discuss the details with civilians.

Better by midnight , explain to her that you sell stuff online to make a jiving .

Her question could be , what kind OF stuff ?

Then tell her , that you design graphic online and send it to people for their business use . I think its better this way ?
