Shared Hosting: How much can it handle?

I'm just curious how many visitors can a shared hosting can actually handle?, or if you are a forum owner how many users can it handle?

It entirely depends on the company you're hosting through and what their limitations per account are.

As kingfish said, it really depends on your hosting company.

It also depends on what you mean by "handle" - most of the top hosting companies offer unlimited bandwidth and storage, it can technically "handle" an unlimited number of users.

If you're worried about server load though, performance isn't where shared hosts shine. If you run a high traffic forum, you may want to consider moving over to a VPS or even a dedicated server. The latter option can get quite pricey though...

If you're willing to get a bit "techy" you can get a cloud server with a service like Digital Ocean. Compared to shared hosting, I'd say the pricing is much better ( if you're dealing with a high traffic forum/web app).

The only downside is that you have know how to configure the server - or get someone to do it for you. So in the end, you get more power but you also have to invest more resources.

DigitalOcean is great, that's actually what I was referring to when I said VPS. If you happen to be a student, or know somebody who is you can get $100 credit with DigitalOcean through github's student pack - which is swell .

But yes, you need to be able to configure things through a linux terminal in order to get everything up and running.

It does vary from host to host. You're most likely going to find the details you're looking for in the host's terms and conditions. I would narrow down to 2 or 3 hosts that you are interested in and then review the conditions to see which ones fit your needs.
