Hi all,

I'm quite new to Internet Marketing (I'm sure 90% of threads start like this) and I was wondering if Domain Flipping is still a profitable market? If so where can I find some information/websites that I can use to get started?

From what I have gathered, I acquire expired/deleted domains, register them for a year with sites like GoDaddy, and then just sell them on websites like Flippa.

I'm pretty sure I'm wrong though.

Any help is appreciated.

    Hey kingyohime,

Domain flipping is most assuredly a great method; and it always will be. I've been flipping for many years, I think around a decade, and business has never been better; and due to the nature of advanced methods, it's one of those markets that should not see saturation.

For time spent working, it still earns me more than any other method. I get up each morning, devote 20 minutes to it, and then continue my day. Does that mean domain flipping is easy? No. Not at all. You either need an experienced coach, a great product, or you need to learn by experience for free. Whenever you encounter a high-level method, information is not freely shared; which makes sense, since a lot of hard work and expense went into getting that method optimized.

What I'd suggest you do now is not rush into buying domains. The entire method is a science and that includes the portion on finding the right names to flip. Spend your time researching before spending a penny. Overall, I'm very passionate about the subject, and it's a great one for newcomers to try since the risk is minimal (domains are cheap to register).

I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks for the informative and speedy reply. So providing I find a good domain, the method i suggested in the OP would work?

        Yes, but with a caveat.

        Here's the thing...

People entering IM (internet marketing) know that professional domainers like myself will register or purchase domains for peanuts and flip them for 3, 4, and 5 figures.

Which means, a lot of people are drawn to the method. But . . . a lot of people waste their money.

Even 90% of professional domainers are actually not fully optimizing the method. Like I say, it's a science really.

I would say, without expert knowledge, 1 in 20 newcomers might be lucky enough to make 1 successful flip in a month, but it won't be a regular thing.

So, to answer your question, you can make money, but please don't go wasting your cash before you do the research. Honestly. You won't win. Read around the topic, buy a product, hire a coach, but don't just rush in. There's an awful lot to domain flipping and I know without question that 90% of it is rarely spoken about. So it's a case of piecing it together or resorting to help.

I wish you all the best and I'll look out for you on WF.

You've really helped me understand what this is all about. I'm going to take your advice and do extensive research before I jump in. Many thanks.

Well you've come to the right place to learn if you're new. Domain flipping is still profitable if you know what you're doing. I'm not an expert on the topic but I do know how to navigate this forum.

If you're looking for information on a specific topic, be sure to look for threads on the topic with the search tool on the header menu

Do a search here in the forum... there are a lot of threads packed with useful suggestions, warnings, methods, etc.

It is not easy money. But it certainly is possible to make money doing it. I have been doing it (to varying degrees) for 15 years.

Would I try to make a living from it? Absolutely not. But when you get a hit, it is always welcome (for me, anyway) play money.

The best thing you can do at this stage is to buy nothing - at all. Too many wannabe domainers go on shopping sprees and end up paying hundreds of dollars for garbage they are in love with and then renew all of it for years.

Read, read, read, but watch your sources. There is probably more bad advice published on domaining than any other business opportunity due to the low bar of entry (got a 99 cent GoDaddy coupon? You're now a domainer!). If you are buying courses/coaching, ask the seller for a list of his most recent sales including the sale price. If he refuses to provide that, walk away.

This is one of those rare threads where everybody has given GREAT advice. Take it to heart. While domain flipping "can" bring you the lifestyle of your dreams, so can flipping burgers - if you do things right and treat it seriously. Domaining requires certain disciplines and determination (like any valid long-term business).

I recommend spending a little time every day at the two main domaining forums, DNforum.com and NamePros.com. That's how I learned most of what I know. Spent a few years studying and learning the business.

  • I love to learn about domaining but I also learn from human nature.

Alot of expert advice seems to assume that all domain buyers are experts. They are far from it. Most use emotions to purchase. Heck CupcakeFrosting.com just sold recently for $601

But that is very far from Honest.com on a godaddy auction that matched the business name of Jessica Alba. for I think $188,000 which I think was a steal considering she is taking her company into the BillionSphere valuation.
