How To Keep Somebodys Attention

I know we live in a world where we all seem to have short attention spans. Trying to market to people for more than a few seconds is quiet a chore. When I started making video's they were coming out to be close to 4 minutes. Then I started to realize that people were only interested in the first 5-8 seconds. Thats about all the time you get to make that critical point on how you can solve their problems.

Good point really... there must be a way to track that. Capturing attention is what its all about.

    That's why there's a whole art/science devoted to copywriting...

The FIRST thing you have to sell people on is why the hell they should waste their time reading/watching whatever it is you have to say.

It's not easy to do... My best advice, don't be boring.

Yeah. Another great way is start by asking a compelling question. . . that makes them think so you can hook their attention

Sorry if I'm detracting from the thread but an attention grabber when I was younger went something like this:

"What do you get when you have a little green ball in your right hand and a little green ball in your left hand" ...

"The undivided attention of a Leprechaun".

(Irish Warriors - Did this Welshman spell Leprechaun correctly?).

I hope that this helps - but I would not recommend putting it into practice with your off line clients

      Regards,
      Jeff.

The first 5 - 8 seconds of most videos is enough to convince people they don't want to hear or watch any more. I have given some videos a chance and been bored to tears by some voice trying to convince me that it really was a good voice to listen to and that it had some really good ideas after struggling blah blah blah blah.

Even worse are the videos that take more than two minutes to introduce the person who is then going to take two minutes to introduce himself and then take ten minutes to talk about what his video is going to be about and then take twenty minutes to say nothing new and then take two minutes to tell you that you should really sign up below to get even more videos.

We don't live in a world where we all have short attention spans - we live in a world where the skill of holding someones attention no longer exists.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.

As well as long videos, huge salespages bore me to tears. I have just had 4 sales emails this morning and when I clicked on the (beautifully designed) salespages and saw how long they were, I just skim read them. Long long lists of testimonials, paypal earnings, free extras, and additional bumf. What I want to see is what does it do and how much. The shorter and more to the point the website, the more tine I spend checking the offer.

Perhaps that's just me being pissy, how do others feel?

Watch TV ads.. see how they get their message
across in a short period of time. Pay attention
to movie trailers and analyse what they do to
    arouse your interest

There's no reason why AIDA shouldn't apply to
a video in the same way that it applies to sales
    copy.

In my 20s I did some in-home sales. The best way to get full attention was to first ask for a glass of water. For some reason, when you're holding their glass in your hand you have a much higher percentage of their attention.

OK, online this is a bit more difficult. "Excuse me. Could I have your Internet connection for a few minutes?"

I nearly fell off my chair and snapped my spine when I discovered the following golden rule, which I wrote about in this blog post about Copy Length, The Golden Rule... it's this:

People will read any amount of words on a web page, as long as it is interesting to them.

To do that, keep it Relevant, keep it Fascinating, keep it Entertaining.

Some Internet Marketing videos still have a long way to go before they "get it".

GIMMICKS AND TRICKS BORE PEOPLE . They want to see tragedy and sex. Godaddy sells a million websites a day thru commercials. Next time you see one pay attention . Women in bikinis. There is NO mention of websites in any of their commercials . Funny works well also and sharp crisp info. I sell Corvette's online and good at it. kind of tricky selling a 100k car without ever seeing the customer .
