Techie Help Needed...

Hi Warriors!

I'm having a devil of a time getting set up with a new Web host. It's NOT the host's fault, it's mine. I've been going back and forth with the new webmaster, but I believe they're in a different time zone and right now, I think it's the middle of the night there. It might be a while, so I thought I'd come here.

My old host didn't have CPanel and my new host does. CPanel seems like it's very intuitive, but for whatever reason, I'm having a devil of a time getting things set up. Yes, I've viewed the "Getting Started" tutorial and the videos for what I'm trying to do. I still can't do what I need, so if you're familiar with CPanel, could you help me?

I'll try to be as brief as possible:

I own several domains which I registered through my old host. (And yes, I own them, my host doesn't.) I changed the name server info to my new host and waited a few days. My domain name has propagated now (along with all of my other names, I assume).

My first and main domain name (Domain A) is my company name. I later registered a better domain name for marketing purposes (Domain B) and parked it at my main site. Anybody typing in Domain B immediately came to my main site's home page.

Now I can't figure out how to do the same thing with my new host in CPanel.

On the CPanel home page under "Domains," I click on "Parked Domains, ", type in Domain B (which I already own) and click the button "Add Domain!" In return, I get this error message:

"Error from park wrapper: Sorry, you are not allowed to add any more than (0) parked domains!"

I thought maybe I was doing the wrong thing, so I selected "Redirects" and "Addon Domains" with similar results. When I view the tutorial videos, all they show me how to do is fill out the form. Not helpful.

What am I doing wrong????

I also need to redirect a couple of other domain names to specific pages of my site and can't do that either.

This simply cannot be that hard. What do I need to do?

Even though I registered all of my domains with the same reigstrar and under my original domain name and any changes should automatically apply to ALL of my domain names, is it possible the name server change didn't apply to the other domain names?

Thanks!

Michelle

  • Michelle,

You aren't doing anything wrong. Your hosting plan does not allow you to park domains. This is a server/hosting plan thing, not a user error thing.

Maybe try putting in a support ticket with your new web host and ask them if you are allowed to park domains, and could they please enable this for your account? Maybe it is just an oversight, or perhaps they only enable it on a case-by-case basis.

    Good luck!!

    • Hey Michelle,

      Try the "addon domains" button.

Also, like someone else said, check your plan as well.

  • G`day Michelle,

You need to have the other domains as ADD ON domains, not parked.
Once they`re add on domains, you can redirect them to where you need
to very easily ... same page just scroll down.

I know it works as I have several redirects setup myself this way ... if
you need help PM me and I`ll be happy to do what I can.

Don`t think it`s possible to redirect to a page below the root this way
though, no drama, simple redirect HTML or PHP page will do that ... I can
give you the code for this.

    • You can usually set up a domain or subdomain to point at a folder which is a sub folder of an existing domain. Most people avoid that because of duplicate content concerns, and the difficulty in getting image/CSS/javascript references to work properly.

.htaccess redirects might be another solution too.

    • G`day Michelle,

*UPDATE* You can specify the redirect to any folder on any other sites
using the addon domain redirection ... just tested it to redirect to one of
my sites on another server with no problem.

Can you please explain what duplicate content issues are a problem,
also, how is image/CSS/js references affected? They aren`t whatsoever
as your not referencing anything FROM the redirected site to show on the
      site your redirecting TO.

The redirection in addons uses HTACCESS redirection so your last
      comment is invalid really ...

  • It depends if you want the redirected domain to have it's own email address of not. If you just want to have it setup so that your domain B when entered the url in a browser opens up domain A then here is what you do.

At your registrar make sure that domain B has the same DNS settings as Domain A.

In cpanel go to Parked Domains and enter the url of domain B.
    www.whateverdomainbis.com

    Click submit.. your done

As long as the domain you are putting on top of the existing website has the same DNS settings as the hosted website then you are set.

Now if you want to have email addresses and it's own pages instead of parking you choose addon domain. What addon domains do is share space with the main account. In this case doman B would physically be located in a subfolder of DomainA.com home/domaina/public_folder/domainb

That is it. you do NOT have to setup redirects at a registrar or any of that stuff. I have been running or administering hosting and servers for many years and this is the simplist way to do it, especially with cpanel.

    Edited to make sense

    • Sorry misread your post.

If you have reseller account at your host and you have your own WHM then you will need to add parked domains to your main site. If you do NOT have reseller access then you will need to have your host increase the allowed parked domains on the account for you.
