Hi all,

One of my sites is in education and I want to put together an ebook about experiences of people in the field, particularly related to jobs within this niche.

As I'm not experienced in this field, I was going to pay a number of people to write about their experiences, but I'm unsure of the legalities (if there are any).

Should I set up some sort of contract requiring permission that the written experiences will be used in an ebook (customers will need to pay) or is there something else I need to be aware of?

Thanks.

J

    Hi Jodie,

I'm no lawyer but I think you just need to be clear with people that you're buying "the copyright", rather than just a "publishing licence". Then you can use it for whatever you want, because you own it. (When you're paying someone to write anything for you, in this kind of context, it's completely normal to be buying the copyright, anyway, even if it's published in their names rather than in yours - not as if you'll be asking for something unusual.)

Often, people will be happy to share their experiences with others - even without a payment being offered. If you indicate that you're going to put in the marketing effort to spread their message far and wide, among an audience they'd like to reach (for whatever reason), then you might have plenty of interest.

The 'Chicken Soup' series of books was created on just that premise - and still works that way, afaik. One of Allen Says' early reports shared the idea of going to a travel forum and getting people who'd visited places to write about their experiences, and then compile them into a travelogue and offer it for sale. So there's some traction for that approach, too.

    Hope this helps.
