Question for creative thinkers

Hey guys, so we have a video sales page that gets a lot of traffic. It's not in the IM niche. Average age is 50ish. Using heat maps, we're noticing that the majority of people click this little "sound" icon:
2014-12-01_1112 - callenb's library located above the video. The icon is just an image and doesn't do anything, but look pretty.

Question is, since people are clicking that, thinking it's going to turn their sound on, do you guys have any suggestions on what we can do to assist them? As far as I know, there isn't a way to access their system volume, but any creative thinkers have any ideas?

Thanks!

  • Personally, when I open a YouTube video I also click the volume icon first to check where my volume is. Could this be the behavior? I would do some live testing.

And if that's the case, remove the icon if it doesn't do anything.

Don't know what you video is about but how about, make it clickable, send them to another page that says congratulations you just found the hidden secret link to get your 10% percent discount

Might work for some but for me it would annoy the hell out of me and I would instantly leave the site and never come back.

Good way to lose customers, no one will believe this secret link crap.

I agree, it could be a great resource for additional sales. Though make itna small popup, that says the same. so if they want to complete the video, they can do that, or if they want, they can click the link in popup an gain the discount!

  • an icon for volume should do just that.....change volume

cheating the customer and sending them somewhere else would be damn right annoying!

      ^^ This exactly.

User interface is generally NOT where you want to be "creative" -- you want to use standard and intuitive motifs so that your users are easily able to navigate yourself and don't get frustrated and leave. Based on your analysis, my guess is that your users are likely feeling frustration when they click the volume icon and they are unable to adjust their volume. If that were my site I would either:
      1. Make the icon work (ideal, though likely difficult to impossible)
      2. Change the icon to a different icon, such as a warning icon (fa-exclamation-triangle: Font Awesome Icons) so that users understand that you're providing them a message about a potential problem, but not a way to solve that problem
      3. Have the icon open a tooltip or something similar providing them with directions on how they can make sure their volume is on (though my guess is that as Frank said, most people know how to do this and you might unwittingly insult your users' intelligence doing this)

Brad, I suspect most visitors are clicking the icon because there's a large red arrow directing them there. They might be thinking it's some special requirement for your video.

Try removing the icon and just leave the text saying something like: "Can't hear this? Be sure your sound is turned on". That's if you even need to mention the sound at all - you'd be surprised how many 50+-year-olds out there have managed to locate their volume control all by themselves.

[LOL] Okay, I see. But I'd still try leaving the reminder off and just monitoring what effect (if any) that has on the number of video views.

I would remove the icon, as it looks clickable to me too, I can see why people would try it if they don't hear the sound. Maybe you should just leave the text?

The now page with a discount code - def not a good idea, I would find it annoying and leave

Removing it and leaving the text should keep it from being a distraction.
