How Do You Evolve as Marketer?

This question came to me when I read somebody's thread about if you are a serious marketer and what makes you a serious marketer. My opinion is that serious marketer is a marketer that tests, tests and tests all the time to see what works the best.

But how do you evolve as marketer to the next level? Does it come with experience, new ideas what to test, buying courses and APPLYING THEM, talking with your customers or what?

Of course everybody is tempted to say that it's all of above but what I'm after is that what's the main driving force behind you. For me it's buying courses and applying those tested methods. Sometimes there's nothing new, sometime there is. Experience counts when you know how to avoid mistakes you did in the past but it still doesn't help you to see the future (it improves your gut feelings though). And I'm not people person enough to talk with a lot of customers. That's why I rely on statistics so much and don't take a lot of customers at once if I'm the contact point.

But that's just me and my limitations, how about you?

    Hey

To me it's just a lot of focus. I've been reading many topics and lost myself, until I focused on one area and found some success. It's something all internet marketers should know.

I do agree experience really counts. Well my article production rate has increased, my blog creation rate too. It's really doing these often that strengthens the skill in my opinion.

Well I am glad my thread got you thinking

I would say one of the key things for me of how to evolve is focus, as already mentioned above - FOCUS, easy to say, not always easy to achieve but when you do your productivity can go up by leaps and bounds.

          Hi Stephen,

But how do you evolve as marketer to the next level?
If this is the level you're at -

what's the main driving force behind you. For me it's buying courses and applying those tested methods. Sometimes there's nothing new, sometime there is
...try experimenting with your own unique ideas as well. If that works, you're at the next level and could become a thought-leader/trend-setter.

Yes, absolutely. Measurement is the key to success in online marketing (including lead generation, social media marketing, article marketing, copy writing and SEO).

I suspect you're asking something like 'how do I go from making a few sales to making a living?' On the assumption I'm right about that, the key is to forget about marketing tactics for a while. Turn your attention to business strategy.

You won't find a lot of information about strategy around here. The online marketing world is too short term, and concerned with making the next sale. It also consists of a LOTS of people working hard to make money for a much smaller group.

Your goal is to move from the LOTS group, and into the smaller group.

That means you need to start your own business. But before you do, get yourself an excellent book on business strategy and start thinking about what's required for your business to succeed.

You were a bit off with your guess but I made this thread mainly for people who are in the situation you described.

I agree with you 100%. The problem with internet marketing scene right now is cannibalization. Marketers who are viewed as "g u r u s" (of course not all but a lot) are desensitizing the whole market. Just look at WSO section - "How to make million dollars over night" and people don't even bother to read it. Maybe it's a good way to go. People are getting back to reality and don't fall into these ridicilous marketing schemes.

Also it's funny how some of the biggest IM "leaders" are basically carbon copies of offline direct marketing g u r u s who don't have big online presense. They are only mixing basic psychology & influence & copywriting techniques to online world and giving it catchy names. And no, I'm not going to say any names because products from those guys are actually really good but not original ideas by any means. Also I don't want to slant anybody in public just because they are smart enough to rehash existing content in a way that it looks like they came up with it.

I'm just so tired with people who sell stuff that isn't field tested.

For me as a total newbie, with zero success or profit, I would have to say stay focused on your desires and goals. I know my own strengths and weaknesses, and I have to work on my weaknesses first. Often I feel like abandoning Internet marketing, but for me to evolve, I need to work on my weaknesses. I have more weaknesses then strengths at the moment, but part off the evolution becoming a good marketer would be to minimize your weaknesses by forcing yourself to take action at overcoming the things that prevent you from moving forward.

Ahh..evolution. Charles Darwin style - but not quite so for internet marketing eh?

First you obtain the knowledge. There are so much information here that information overload isn't an impossibility.

Secondly, you start to take action. Taking action on the knowledge you acquire is the 1st baby steps into the dangerous world of internet marketing.

Third, you fail. Yes, failure is an important step in my opinion. One who does not fail does not know what succeeding is! Only by failing will you know your mistakes and refine your weaknesses and improve!

Fourth, you succeed. Ahh..the taste of success is sweet aye?

Lastly, you contribute back. It is only natural to want to pass on your wisdom (and build your reputation?) once you are a successful IMer. By giving shall you recieve even more and that is true with IM (in the financial and business sense..). Not only that, our human need for approval and importance also plays a small part in us wanting to contribute back - it tells us that we are still up to date and useful - and that we are wise and powerful. :p

Of course, I type this out in the broadest manner of evolution!

Well, unserious marketers see things through their own eyes -
they look for what they can GET out of the deal first.

Gradually as the fog of self-interest lifts you start to understand
and empathize with other people more. If you don't talk to
people you miss-out on a lot. You can learn more about what
works in selling by having sales conversations than you can
by reading books and tweaking websites.

Salesmanship is an essential discipline of getting good at this.

Even if you are awkward you get better with practice. Try
marketing yourself as a consultant and get comfortable having
selling conversations. Even if your close-rate is low you will
learn an awful lot about people and the sort of verbiage
and questions that turn them on.

Evolving as an internet marketer involves learning and applying. Trial and error is a big part of IM. You need to keep pushing. Most internet marketers want to rush to the next level and most of them fail a hundred times in the process of doing so... I believe that's how you evolve...

However, if you're talking about general marketing, I believe you need to be creative think out of the box, give the potential customer something to think about, something that will stay in their head, even after a long time, its all about making an impact
