I have seen that Disqus is being used by a lot of websites that allow comments these days including a few national newspapers.

Before you post you can register with disqus or sign in with your social media account but they want permission to access a lot of your personal information.

Obviously companies see how much money Google make from untimitely having access to some much information about us and they want their slice of the pie but things are going too far in my opinion when you have to give up so much information to post a comment on an article.

If you sign into Disqus using Twitter you have to give Disqus permission to:

1. Read Tweets from your timeline.
2. See who you follow and follow new people.
3. Update your profile.
4. Post Tweets for you.

If you sign into Disqus using Facebook you have to give Disqus permission to basically access all the information in your account and your friends get their public information passed on to Disqus.

How can websites use this to moderate comments when this is what their readers have to give up to participate on their website? I would never use this to comment or on my own websites and I feel that website owners are missing out on a lot of valuable contributions to their website by implementing this.

People will give up all their information for almost nothing. How do you think CPA marketers make money?

I don't like Disqus at all.

Mainly because its profile triggers spam filters and comments are often blocked inside firewalls.

I use the WP Plugin Facebook Comments so people can comment using their facebook profile. Also their comments are posted on their own facebook wall unless they uncheck the option to do that.

Did not realize that have access to that kind of information. I am the same, never really been a fan. I just don't like being required to use my social profiles to comment. I understand why people are using it, but I just don't like others getting their content on my social "walls".

Ya, now that I think about it, there is that option. Your right.

Obviously we know why site owners use it, it's an easy way to get their content to go social.

    Methodology, interesting tips.

My questions really are: What's the deal with Disqus? Why do sites, even "big" sites, use it?

If I'm not mistaken, there's a paid version that can be branded, or at least, modified to fit into a site's existing theme. Then there's the remote hosting. Big sites can attract thousands of comments in a matter of minutes which can gobble up a lot of bandwidth and server space. Disqus assumes that burden in exchange for big data collection and/or funds and/or both!

As already stated, it's so much easier to manage than most commenting systems. You can white list people so their comments show up right away, a feature I like. Another nice feature is that comment can be shared social, right down to each individual comment.

One reason more marketers don't use it is because it does not have the extra link back like CommentLUV. From a commenters perspective, the extra backlink is a great way to drive traffic to inner pages and posts.

I hear you. Perhaps this ^^^ as I'm only starting my site. When it gets bigger, Disqus may be something I should look into.

Well, you really "should" decide now. I say that because if you add Disqus later, after you already have comments, while it imports older comments, they don't show gravatars from previous comments. Frankly they don't look as nice. It strips out links as well. One of the slight drawbacks to the plugin.

Remember to, you don't have to be a big site to use Disqus. Not like it's only for big sites.

It's not the perfect solution and I am sure not trying to talk people into using it, just the "better" solution I found. And I even put up a blog post that was a round up of several bloggers and what they used for comments.

    Just my two cents

If you can make post as a guest post, or without logging on the disqus by using social media sites, it would better. You should not permission any third party apps to access to your account. In this case you can create a disqus account, it also better for you. Thanks.
