How to Monetize a How-to guide on Wordpress

Hello,

I recently wrote a fairly extensive tutorial using Wordpress (paid for URL). After testing the water, I got approximately 2k views in the last 12 hours and it seems like it was pretty well received. Now that I know I got something that people are interested in, I need to know how to monetize it. The tutorial is broken down into 5 steps so I was thinking of requiring a membership in order to read past step one. Does anyone have any advice on a good way of doing this? Currently the tutorial is all compiled onto one website.

Does wordpress allow advertising? I am getting mixed responses to this question. Thanks in advance for your time!

Do you have a blog on wordpress.com that is on their platform and under their ToS?

In that case you would need to be careful and ensure you stay in compliance. They can be strict with affiliate links, I don't know about ads.

Or do you have a self-hosted WP site with the CMS from wordpress.org?

In that case you control all the content and ads on your site.

Wordpress.com is not really a suitable platform for a primary money site.

Is there a better platform that you recommend? Unfortunately, I already paid for the domain name through WP....

I never ran into any problems putting affiliate links or even adsense on my WordPress blog. I tried just about every form of advertising and no problems 2 years in.

    Hi
My advice would be to sign up as an affiliate with a hosting company like hostgator for example. In your guide you could include a section dedicated to hosting and how it works. you can then include your affiliate link and offer the people a discount on their hosting package if they sign up under your link. hosting companies pay up to $125 per customer you give them. You can also become an affiliate for a company that sells pre made WordPress templates. Make a banner on the side that directs people via your affiliate link.

I tried putting adsense on my blog and I feel it's more of a distraction away from my affiliate links. I just have a couple of my own banners now.

I started pretty much the same as you and I to this day make commissions from that blog.

Anyways sorry for that wall of text. hope I gave you some ideas

You should be able to change the DNS servers for the domain name and point at any host.

I'm not sure if WP puts restrictions on domains registered through them but they shouldn't really.

There are free web hosts but try searching Google because I don't know them myself.

If you want to use advertising on your site, or promote a product, you really need a WordPress installation on your own website which is on your own hosting which you pay for. WordPress is really just a simple way of building a website. Its a software platform which can be customized an almost infinite number of ways.

When you have control over your own site, you can use it in pretty much anyway you want, within the TOS of your hosting company, but generally in many more ways than being connected with wordpress dot com.

Get some hosting so you don't have to worry about that. It's pretty cheap now days and it's the difference between subletting office space and having your own office.

First you should start building a list with those people in that niche then you can start marketing and communicating through email with them. I would also consider placing adsense or banners on the blog.

Depending on the topic of your tutorials, I would definitely consider using affiliate programs to advertise services like those that offer WordPress themes or useful paid plugins.
