Ok - what's a Goober?

Lately I keep seeing people referring to 'Goobers' and I'm sure they're talking about people.

It sounds like it should be the name of a candy bar.

What is one? and why the sudden use of the word - it distracts me from what they're saying when I keep seeing it.

    You probably know this but the word g-u-r-u is automatically replaced with the work goober.

    The word goober is synonymous with the following:
    nerd, dork, dweeb, geek, loser, dolt, fool, wierdo, oaf, etc.

    I need to stop turning around. Seriously.

    This morning I read a DM from someone who was mentioning an ebook I wrote, Overnight (Gooorooo) - and of course her DM referred to it as Overnight Goober. I was like, WHAT? Is she dissing my book? Just being clever? Then I read the main threads and realized that Allen Says was playing Fiendishly Clever Word Switch Mind Games.

      As much as I hate to admit it, this is a valid point.

      If we're paying for ads in the WSO forum and our copy, written in a way to
      entice prospects to buy, is altered by these substitutions, then it could
      seriously affect sales.

      I personally don't use these words but understand why others do.

      Is there a way to restrict the substitutions to forums outside the WSO

          Um... that's what bluefart methods ARE. Generally you commit the illegality or fraud against some big company like Google or Amazon, but being illegal and fraudulent is rather the point.

          I can understand discouraging blackhat products and certainly if the forum
          doesn't want them, they are within their right not to approve them.

          But what is really so bad about the word "gu-ru?"

          Like it or not, many people associate that word with knowledge and
          success, so if they see an ad that reads...

          "Have "gu-ru" like success with your <fill in the blank>"

          then changing that to goober can really kill the effectiveness of the
          ad.

          Of course this is just my opinion.

              Anything that encourages people to avoid the same old tired and stale terms in their copywriting and posting is a good thing in my book.

              The G word, in particular, has been one of the most used (and misused) descriptions in IM. It's nice to have a break for a while.

                        or smarties maybe...i think changing gur_u to goobers is a great way to get us to become more creative. we are after all marketers especially those of us selling wsos.

                        surely we can come up with a better term. i like swami too, but not so much in an internet sense. maybe allen will change swami to smarmy...i like that one better.

                        here's just a quick bunch of words to use instead of gur_u that i found with a quick thesaurus. they'll be $5 a pop please

                          Forgive me if I'm a little slow, not being a gur... er, sage and all, but I've got to say there's something going on in this thread I really don't get.

                          OK, so, Hypothetical time:

                          Lets say you've got 2 headlines.

                          One is well-written, slick, cool and pretty original as these things go.

                          One is an old cliche-ridden with words you're sick and tired of seeing.

                          In the split tests you do, the cliche outpulls the one you like (and, in my experience, when this happens, it's often by a factor of 5 to 10).
                          That's the situation and it's a pretty common one, it seems to me.

                          So, do you make the sacrifice, deprive yourself and your family of the resources those extra sales would give you, deprive those customers who won't be buying with the other headline (or copy, or product name) of all of the benefits of your product (You're selling valuable stuff that really helps people in some way or other, right?) in order to... :confused:

                          Well, that's what I'm not getting. What do you get instead?

                          Honest question, really. What do you get out of not using what works as long as what works is not illegal or immoral?

                          I'll both appreciate and respect any insights anyone can give me into what might be true about this for them.

            Either is better than 'the word'...I'm really sick of seeing it.

            In most cases where I see the word used it sounds so childish that I'm embarrassed it's written here.

                    In my mind, if a person doesn't have $20 to spend on a WSO I have a really hard time understanding what kind of value they are going to bring to other Warriors.

                    I do understand there are some certain circumstances such a article writers and graphic designers and such that may be in this position, but if you are selling products, or teaching me some method of internet marketing $20 better not be a issue.

                    If the $20 is a issue, then I have a hard time believing what you are doing is worth a crap and you should probably go back to the drawing board and come back when you have some real skills that can line your pocket, not extracting from Warriors.

            Your choice of words here is very interesting. Specifically "kill" and the G word.

        Eh, it's not enough to go on a rampage about, but most people would probably be annoyed if they paid to run a classified ad in a newspaper and the ad department decided to substitute funny words for what you paid for. Not much different here.

        I reckon it's also possible that having parts of your title changed to Bluefart or Goober could cause people to not bother to look at your post, which could cause you to lose a lot more money than twenty bucks.

    Seeing "Goober" around the forum always cracked me up. I also had saved the G-word in my notepad for a rough draft, and then thought, "What the F? Goober?"

    I'm glad though. I think most IM G-words deserve the name Goobers, so the G-word can go back to describing Indian teachers/spiritualists.

    When Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister in the UK, she banned the leader of the political wing of the IRA from speaking on TV. It was to stop giving the IRA a 'voice'.

    The silly thing was, when the guy was speaking, all they did was get someone else to dub over his voice and say the exact same thing.

    What was the point?

    I must say, though, goober sounds like a detrimental term. So banning the word 'gooroo' hasn't really achieved anything.

    Plus, in my view, if someone has done something genuinely wrong, to stifle criticism is censorship. That's the same as making one rule for some and another for the 'elite' and smacks of double standards.

    If you're going to ban criticism, then do it for everyone. Otherwise just ban criticism which is unjustified.

    And the way to tell the difference is by seeing how many people are making the same complaints.

      Keep 'em coming! And it's a GREAT idea to retire these words (G and BH) from our collective consciousness.

        I think we need to make the word changes go one more step - but not sure if this is possible to do.

        If someone types "what is goober" and uses the word goober it should show up as "what is a weebie"

        and if some one uses the word weebie it comes out as g-u-r-u.

        LOL, will this confuse the script? anyone?
