So this is a question aimed at anyone who owns or has owned a site that involves selling a product with OTOs, upsells, downsells etc

Is it better to redirect a user to the payment processor as soon as they click buy on your product, then bring them to the OTO etc and keep sending them to the payment processor to pay then sending them to the next part of the funnel. Or better to let them navigate their way through the funnel then send them to the payment processor to pay for everything they have selected?

How have you done it / how are you doing it? and why?

Thanks

  • Get the starting money first. Like they pay $20 for your ebook. Then you can redirect them to your OTO. Remember that you will be making most of your money on the back end.

I like to get the money for each product, as they go along.

Why? Because this way I avoid them changing their mind at the very end and not buying ANY of it. Especially since the "bill" looks a lot BIGGER at the end of the funnel as opposed to thinking of it as smaller purchases, such as $7 front end, $17 up-sell, $27 OTO2, $37 OTO3 -- instead of $88 TOTAL at the end...

Stripe (the payment processor) allows for 1-click upsells which is really cool and you can set that up easily with WarriorPlus...

    Best,
    Shane

I never thought of this point actually. This in itself I think is enough to swing me the way of collecting payments in between every part of the funnel. Thanks!

I must look into Stripe. I do not know anything about them.

Great answer, thank you. Still keen to hear some other peoples views though

I agree, get the money first. As said, you don't want to give them a reason or route to leave empty handed.

I think it's very logical to get the money first.

If there's a $17 offer, a $47 offer and a $97 offer then the total bill would be $161, and i'm pretty sure you would lose a lot of money this way from people changing their mind.

In reality getting them to purchase the front end product proves a few things...

They're committed to buy, in the buying mood and they have a means to buy. Now once they're buying you can most certainly offer them additional purchases to complement or upgrade their initial purchase. This happens in everyday life, so why not in IM?

    Get paid first!
You get the email too when they pay

Thanks for the advice guys! I had a feeling getting paid first would be better but thought that if you have multiple OTOs and upsells etc it might get tedious for the customer to keep paying separately. Makes sense to reduce the amount of opportunities for them to back out though.

This is just my advice, so take it with a grain of salt. You're probably using Paypal as a payment processor, correct?

My advice would be to use clickbank, because once the user purchases it will automatically bring them to the OTO, they can click to buy - and it will just automatically bill them. My conversions went up a substantial amount after taking this approach. All the best.

Step by step, some people will skip the 1st OTO but purchase the 2nd if is fits their needs.

I use DealGuardian and like other payment processors the user has to purchase first before they move onto the next part of the funnel.

I know some payment processors have one-click upsells which you can try testing out so if they are interested in the OTO they don't have to go through the whole checkout process all over again.

Get the money first and then redirect them to the your OTO page rather than your thank you /download page. For multiple OTOs, let them pay for one and then redirect them to another offer. This way they don't know how much more "value" you are offering and you get to secure some sales and also get the chance to showcase all your products. Offering them navigation will spoil the purpose of the OTOs. If you offer everything on the plate they would get confused and leave...probably without buying a single product.

OTOs are supposed to guide the user's mind in a specific durection once they are in "buying mode". So, offering them navigation isn't a good idea.

They don't have to know you have a funnel in place - let them gradually discover it.
